Geeky Stuff You Just Can't Get Into

hula hoops(too fat apparently)

and spacehoppers, I was late getting to a job interview on one of these things, totally useless.

Doctor Who
Battlestar Galactica and most space shows (with the exception of Firefly and Red Dwarf)
Sarah Conner Chronicles
Model Trains
Zombies
Game of Thrones
His Dark Materials
Dungeons and Dragons
World of Warcraft
... and pretty much any game of any kind (with the exception of the ones I was into when I was growing up i.e. Final Fantasy 8, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Croc, and Supermario 3)
Anime (with the exception of a few of the films i.e. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Totoro etc, as well as Trigun, Sailor Moon and Pokemon if it counts :funny:)
Keeping things in box/mint condition (always been terrible at it... when I was a kid, I even took the TY tags off some of my beanie babies cause they were annoying when I wanted to play with them :p)
Lego
The Alien Quadrilogy
Blade Runner
Highlander

Also, I was browsing to see if I could think of anything big I was forgetting and found this online test for how much of a Geek you are which was fun :)

I got 24.7%, so I guess i'm not that geeky after all! http://www.innergeek.us/geek-test.html

I forgot about these on my list. I never got into those games. I like RPG games, but those never got me too interested.

That doesn't make much sense to me, as in, you must have watched a helluva lot of anime to balance up so much of it that you didn't like against what you liked, to come out and say that you don't like it in general.
I mean, if someone says they don't like anime, I would take that to mean the animation style is of such a style that they can't settle into any of the storytelling, which is obviously not the case with you. So, i would say, your problem is not with anime, it's just that you have only liked so many of the stories you have watched.

I guess it's because I have a friend who is madly into anime.

She loves evangelion, outlaw star, akira, ghost in a shell etc etc, and she's constantly trying to get me 'into anime'. But while I can appreciate the occasional anime film, and while I still have a little place in my heart for the stuff I grew up with as a kid, i'm just not 'into' anime in any major sense that I watch alot of it or get excited when a new anime film is coming out.

It's the same thing with Star Trek. I have watched and enjoyed plenty of Next Gen, DS9 and Voyager episodes in my life because they are often on tv when there is nothing better to watch. But i've never gotten 'into it' properly. I couldn't name more than a few of the characters, and i've never intentionally watched the show in order.

I guess both of those are things I probably COULD get into if I tried.

Unlike some of the things on my list that i've tried and just don't get at all (BSG, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones etc)

I pretty much copied some of the above posters lists and added comments. Of course I'll have to update this.

Buffy (but Whedon did great with Firefly, more grown up sci-fi adventure show that suits me better)
Role playing
Gaming (apart from when I'm drinking together with a gaming fan friend, and he shows me the latest stuff. Even the games he plays with his little daughter can be fun those times)
Harry Potter (was a grown up even when the books came out, but I admit that the movies are well made)
Pokemon (already to old when that stuff came out)
Anime/manga. Well, I do enjoy some quality anime movies like Akira, but I have a problem with the aesthetic ideals of the manga style.
Power Rangers
Lord of the Rings stuff. Tried to read some of the books in the 80:s, but never got in to it. Also watched like one and a half of the movies, but that's it.

Probably more to come on this list when I figured a while.

Well, it sounds like your friend has the wrong idea about it really, I imagine there are anime fans who will only get excited about an anime project being released whose story, or credentials, sounds interesting to them, esp since there is so much of it out there.
her saying that is like saying to you,' you have to get into sci-fi', and you only liking a few of the shows/movies you see.

That's totally different, Star Trek is a specific story, if the animation style is not a problem for you, saying you can't get into anime, is the equivalent of saying you can't get into science fiction, with a couple of exceptions.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would say they aren't into science fiction, but they do have certain exceptions like Alien or E.T.

That's basically all i'm saying. I don't particularly like the style of storytelling in anime films and tv shows, or the annoying voices or some of the animation either.

But there is the occasional movie like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke that I find a little bit more accesible than most. Which you'd probably find most of the GA would agree with.

With comic book movies on the other hand, i'm just into them. I'm excited about every single one that comes out, and even the ones that are under par usually get multiple viewings because I just love them all.

That's what I call being 'into' something.

Well, that's what I said to you, 'unless you have an actual problem with the animation style, you don't have a problem with anime', and here you are for the first time explaining that you do in fact have a problem with the animation style, and why, *now* your statement makes sens to me, I wouldn't hav quoted you in the first place if you had said you didn't like the animation style.

I have to say, i have not watched *that* much anime, but I dare say that the voice work is not different than from mainstream US animation, but then, I have mainly watched dubbed versions, haha, by american actors, but I've watched a couple of animes with subtitles, i never got the sense of 'annoying voices' being prevalent, or moreso than you might find the voices annoying in a US/UK animation.

Getting an erection over anything and everything Fassbender.

Now, granted, that's not confined solely to the geek community, but still. :o

As I said, I don't 'particularly' like the animation or storytelling style, as in I don't obsessively love it like a fan, and I won't watch all anime films that come out just because i'm a fan of the style.

Pixar animation I love. Disney animation I love. I'll watch every single movie of those that comes out. Anime is sometimes okay, some of the time a bit too weird for me. So I don't love it, but that doesn't mean I dislike it in any major way. I kind of feel indifferent too anime TBH.

That doesn't change anything of what I originally said

I'm a gamer, but there are some games that other gamers went nuts for that I simply can't enjoy. For example: Minecraft and Leagues of Legends. I can see how they could be fun to some people, but I just can't enjoy them.

I view anime the same way I would TV shows. Most anime (like most TV) is utter crap. Forgettable garbage. But every now and then, there is an awesome show.

So, saying you dislike all anime (as many people, not necessarily here, do), is a pretty damn broad statement.

Umm... I don't like... umm...
Nope, I like pretty much all geeky stuff.

Firefly
Buffy
Dr. Who.

I like Inspector Spacetime though.

I've slowly gotten into all things geeky over time. I'm not afraid of trying new things.

BSG (liked the original, though),
D & D
WOW (I play FFXI though)

That's it, Kuro. You get your ass to Texas. You're playing some First Edition D&D with me and my boys.

:argh:

:doom: :doom: :doom:

Old Star Trek, this will sound like a sin - but 'Wrath of Khan' wasn't really that exciting to me. Maybe I just don't understand it or it was the time in which it came out that made it so epic. It was enjoyable, but don't see the big deal. However, the new Star Trek? Abrams has definitely made me a fan. Maybe it's because it's more like Star Wars kinda and that's more my speed...

I assumed Star Trek was a parody for a long time.

Abrams' Star Trek is more (good) Star Wars than Star Trek. Not that that's a bad thing per se.

It's difficult to get into a lot of long-running series.

Start at season 5, which came out in 2010. I'm not saying start at the very beginning, all the way in the 60's. I didn't and had no problem. It honestly hard to watch the older stuff now. I've only seen a handful of older episodes, but I started with the new series, which started in 2005.

Yeah, some of you guys brought up some other things I've never been able to get on board with.

Doctor Who - Never, ever saw the appeal. At all.

Pokemon - This one feels a little unfair to single out because it's a kid thing; if I had been younger when it was popular, who knows? Maybe I'd have been into it.

Anime - Just never been into it. Not really into much animation in general, other than Beavis and Butthead and a few other things.

Harry Potter MOVIES - Love the books, but the films just never did it for me. Nothing against the actors; I actually think that most of them (in particular the three leads) were very strong, but for some reason, the films just didn't have the magic (for lack of a better word) that the books possessed.

A few years ago I would have also said zombies never cut it for me, but I've become such a big Walking Dead fanboy, I can't say that anymore.

Also never got into World of Warcraft, but I think that's mostly because I was such a diehard Diablo fan and I've been waiting for so long for Blizzard to turn their attention back to that series (and they finally have, woo-hoo!).
