Can we move this thread from the Star Wars sequels section to here?

1 year and 5 months... It's going to be tough.

Wait, it's actually filming? Or are we just excited each movie has its own section now?

At least we have some movies to tie us over until May 2017.

They started filming months ago. Just not principal photography...which starts in like 2-3 weeks.

The forum though just got created though.

Okay, here goes a question. Do you all want the movie to start where we left off or have a time jump?

Well that's encouraging:

Why J.J. Abrams reflects regret over deboarding Star Wars before Episode VIII, Washington Post

J.J. ABRAMS recently read the script for Episode VIII of Star Wars. And he had a reaction to it that his lifelong friend, “The Force Awakens” actor Greg Grunberg, had not ever heard from the director over their decades together in the industry.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says,” Grunberg, who plays pilot Snap Wexley in the new film, tells The Post’s Comic Riffs. Grunberg said that Abrams called the Episode VIII script “so good” that he wished he had written it.

“He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],” continues Grunberg, whose credits on Abrams series include “Lost” and “Felicity,” “but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Abrams’s remark serves, too, as a ringing endorsement of the new script and its filmmaker.

I expecting a time jump about 6 to 8 months with

-Rey/Luke jedi training
-Finn recovering
-Poe and the X-wing continue to target FO locations
-resistance rebuilding with remaining new republic fleet
-ship named after Han Solo

I expect a time jump of some time. The opening crawl usually explains what's happened between the two movies.

There will absolutely be a jump in time but I think it will be less than than the jump between New Hope & Empire for sure.

That's the beauty of Star Wars though. They can skip over a year and that right there...is a whole span of time where history lies. History to be expanded upon in various mediums.

I can't imagine the time jump will be that much considering how much of a cliffhanger the ending to Force Awakens was. We can't just be left to assume that Rey and Luke stood on that cliff in a stalemate for several months. I think the actual span of time will be left ambiguous. We'll come in after Finn has recovered, when there's a new mission for Poe to embark on, and with Rey and Luke exchanging expository introductions.

Why would anyone assume that? Luke will likely be training Rey between TFA and Episode 8.

Personally I'm hoping for a couple years or 3 so that Rey can be a more experienced apprentice when we meet her again. But I'm not sure the galactic situation allows for a time jump like that. In 2 - 3 years the First Order could **** up a lot of things. If there is a time jump like that then I expect the galactic situation to have deteriorated substantially.

Please, don't make it any longer like that stupid ten year gap between I and II. Make it like 5-6 months to 1 or 2 years between VII and VIII.

What was the gap between IV and V?? and V and VI? I forget...I think it might have been maybe 2 years at least...

It's interesting, because SW films have never picked up immediately after the last one, and I get why. You want a time jump to show progression. But, they ended TFA on SUCH a cliffhanger, and I'm sure that A LOT of people want to her that first conversation, that I wouldn't mind if Episode VIII picks up right there. And then, we have our time jump.

As for the OT, the films themselves never specify exactly how much time has passed in-between films (the only SW to do that actually is AOTC, which tells us that 10 years have passed between TPM and it). But if I remember right, there's meant to be like a 2-3 year time skip in-between ANH and ESB, and maybe 1-2 years in-between ESB and ROTJ.

True, it seems like a long time, especially given how TFA ended. But, in my experience, the time tends to pass quicker than you'd expect if you have other things to occupy your time.

-We'll probably still be talking about and debating TFA for months to come.

-There's numerous other potentially cool genre stuff coming out this year to focus on.

-Then we'll have another SW film (Rogue One) to talk about at around this time next year.

-We'll probably get the first teaser for Episode VIII in the fall sometime, early winter at the latest, so we can then talk about that as well.

Also, in terms of big blockbusters, a year and a half aint that long a wait comparatively-speaking. I mean we waited:

-3 years to get the Avengers sequel.
-3 years to get the new James Bond film.
-4 years for the new ST film.
-The OT and PT films all came out 3-4 years apart.

Johnson screened letters never sent and twelve oclock high for the production crew. So deducing how to take inspiration from these movies...

Letter Never Sent synopsis:
This absorbing tale of exploration and survival concerns the four members of a geological expedition, who are stranded in the bleak and unforgiving Siberian wilderness while on a mission to find diamonds.
Luke and Rey spend a lot of screen time (maybe all theirs?) at the Jedi Temple searching for Force Artifacts. Possibly Kylo Ren and Snoke will also arrive and they will battle there?

Twelve O'Clock High synopsis
In this story of the early days of daylight bombing raids over Nazi Germany, General Frank Savage must take command of a "hard luck" bomber group. Much of the story deals with his struggle to whip his group into a disciplined fighting unit in spite of heavy losses, and withering attacks by German fighters over their targets.
The B-story could be about the Restistance pilots and soldiers doing raids on the last pieces of The First Order left, alternatively trying to seek out where Snoke is hiding?

Tying these to togehter could mean both stories collide (as in ESB) at one place, either at Snokes base or at the Jedi Temple.

Or something like this?

I've been wondering for awhile. Mark Hamill said in several interviews about how nostalgic it was being in the Millennium Falcon's cockpit again. When did this happen? Was that a shoot for VIII or he just simply visited the set?

On the one hand I'd love for Episode 8 to end with Luke and Rey leaving the planet. Their journey in Episode 8 being her training and development and Luke trying to teach her patience and not to rush off and repeat the mistake he made rushing off to Cloud city. And them exploring the ruins and discovering secrets.

On the other hand, I dont really know how well that would keep an audiences attention. It'd be a serious change of pace and tempo for a star wars film, and the other plot dealing with the other characters would need to bring the more traditional star wars elements.

But I doubt they'll do anything like that.

Also I'm curious to see how they handle Luke in 8. Will he be reluctant to leave the planet? A guilt ridden recluse? Will he be ready to face Snoke as soon as Rey tells him what's happened in the galaxy?

Really want to see Reys training in episode 8.

Maybe add a rocky montage too.

I think there won't be much of a time jump at all - it might just be overnight, even. VIII will pick up the next day with Rey and Luke discussing the events of VII and Finn recovering.
