General Motors

Regarding the proposed financial assistance
of the 'big three' American auto companies, radical
steps must be taken to ensure accountability of these
companies as a whole, and especially the corporate
executives who manage these companies.
Any loans and/or bailout funds should not be enacted
unconditionally. If it may be best to break up
Chrysler (which is performing the worst) and have a
competitor like Renault/Nissan get a chunk, then have
the rest merged with General Motors or Ford, so be it.
Also, to have partial government ownership of these
companies should not be viewed as a negative. The
federal government should take permanent stakes in all
of these American auto companies, ensure a regular
board of directors presence, then force these
companies to design and build definitive models for
fuel efficient cars, including electric cars,
alternative-fuel cars, that are affordable. The
companies should abandon the hummers and outsized
models. Lastly, Ford, GM and Chrysler need to be
brought onboard to collaborate and contribute to mass
transit efforts (next-generation buses, light-rail, heavy-rail, etc.), starting with
their backyard of Detroit.

Where is the cut and paste from?

I pay for my water. I get a bill every month for water, how do you get water for free?
Wait, you're telling me that there's no place for you to get water to drink except your house? Schools, libraries, work, etc. Don't be a ninny.
all the people who lost their home and had them forclosed know how to manage money
I was specifically calling out the rich folks of General Motors in that post. But speaking of the people who lost their homes and had them forclosed, they're just idiots. They knew they couldn't afford the house, they knew that they didn't have the money to pay it off--but they let that "GREED" set in and got it anyway. No mismanagement of money, just greed. I don't feel sorry for them at all, in fact, they deserve it. Which is why I'm happy about the economy. We as a people/country are finally getting what we deserve because of our greed--a swift kick in the ass!

a lot of them COULD afford their homes. until they lost their jobs.... yeah, people who work hard lose their jobs and homes. they finally got what they deserved

Losing one's job happens, I thought we all knew that. I've been through it...no one bailed me out but myself. The very fact that so many people are scared of being down-and-out, is perhaps the best possible reason why I'm glad it's happening. :o

So, I'm a "Ninny"? Nice.

I pay for the water I would drink in a school with my Tax Payer Dollars. I pay for the water I would drink at a Library with my Tax Payer Dollars. I pay for the water I drink at the place of my employment with the work I provide TO my employer. The work I provide my employer gains him profits, and in exchange of those profits, he purchases water from a supplier, and then in turn drink water from that fountain. I trade heartbeats for that water. There is NO SUCH THING as a free lunch, son.

Auto bailout package just passed in the house....

no one bailed the people who lost their jobs... that is why their is an increase in unemployment. why do they deserve it?

basically what you are saying a person works hard all his life, loses his job, loses his home, and he deserves it? yes, it happens. But give me one good reason why people deserve to lose their home and job? you are happy that people are "afaid?" people wake up and can't get the money to feed their kids and you are happy about that?

I get people who come to me for a job. People who are TWICE my age because they cant find work. and they have a family to feed. And i cant help but tell them i can't afford someone as qualified as them and they are willing to work just as hard for me, for less money to feed their family. those people don't deserve it. it sucks that it happens. it is life. but you calling it a good thing is foolish. and the fact that you are happy people cant take care of their families is down right wrong.

He's just trying to push your buttons XP......

hard for me to tell. i haven't gotten used to anyone's sarcasim on this board yet. still too new. but that would explain a lot.

In 2007, Toyota sold 9.37 million vehicles.

In 2007, General Motors sold 9.37 million vehicles.

In 2007, Toyota made $17.1 billion.

In 2007, General Motors lost $38.7 billion.
http://blog.mises.org/archives/009076.asp
That was the second best sales total in GM’s 100-year history and the biggest loss ever for any automaker in the world.

For Toyota, that was roughly $1,800 in profit for every vehicle sold. For GM, it was an average loss of $4,100 for every vehicle sold.

Collectively, Detroit’s Big Three automakers are currently losing about $5 billion per month, with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, respectively, burning through $2 billion, $2 billion and $1 billion in cash every 30 days.

Iz not teH inept management and unions faulz, iz teH free market faults. We need to regulate regulate regulate!!! We needs to putting the UAW's president as the car czar to managing teH small 3

How about we ACTUALLY let the Free market work, and stop blaming the twisted version he have? We haven't had the Free Market in over 20 years, time for change back to the way it used to be!

FOX News Poll: 'Car Loan' Payments Irk Americans
Thursday, December 11, 2008

Ernie Paicopolos

As lawmakers debate the extent and nature of a financial aid package to the big three U.S. automakers, Americans seem skeptical and generally negative toward the whole process, according to the latest FOX News poll.

Nearly six in ten Americans (58 percent) disapprove of the federal government giving U.S. automakers billions of dollars in loan money and 37 percent approve. Majority opposition is consistent across party lines as 52 percent of Democrats, 64 percent of Republicans, and 58 percent of independents disapprove of the idea.

Those living in union households are slightly more inclined than Americans in general to approve of loaning money to the automakers: 44 percent approve and 52 percent disapprove.

Moreover, Americans are split on whether the loan money would ever be paid back to the government: 48 percent think it is likely automakers would pay it back and 50 percent disagree.

The national telephone poll was conducted for FOX News by Opinion Dynamics Corp. among 900 registered voters from December 9 to December 10, 2008. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

This pervasive sense of cynicism seems to be generated by a distrust of car company management—perhaps fueled by the controversial “private jet” and then “hybrid” car travels to Congress. A solid plurality (43 percent) lays the blame for the auto company crisis squarely at the feet of management executives, while about one in seven Americans (15 percent) blames labor unions. Overall bad economic conditions are cited by 13 percent as the main reason behind car industry woes and 4 percent blame government regulations.

And while a sizable majority (67 percent) feels the economy would be hurt “a great deal” by U.S. carmakers going out of business, only about one in five (21 percent) is “extremely concerned” with the prospect of auto company bankruptcies.

Some 15 percent of Americans think they personally would be hurt “a great deal” if U.S. car-makers went belly-up.

Almost as many Americans think the auto companies would survive on their own without government money (31 percent) as think they would survive only if they get government cash (36 percent). One-quarter (25 percent) think they will fail even with public largesse.

How do American-made cars stack up against their foreign competition? Most Americans think the quality of U.S. cars is either “worse” (40 percent) or “the same” (36 percent) as foreign cars—with one in five (20 percent) believing American cars are “better.”

A solid 59 percent majority of Americans says they would not buy a car from a bankrupt auto company — about the same percentage of their friends they think would not do so (55 percent).

so it looks like the bailout bill is on hold till congress is back in session

It looks like it has something to do with the Republicans wanting UAW to slash wages to be on parity with Japanese autoworkers.... I admit I am kind of surprised.

DOW futures already down 300 pts. Tomorrow is going to be roller coaster ride.

I can't say as though I'm really surprised. After all, look at what happened to the financial bailout.

I blame the politicians more for the financial bailout. They didn't personally see to it that the money was used for the economy and not to pay their friends, go on vacations, and so forth.

But as a whole I'm not worried nor am I going to be in fear. I think we as a people need to continue living our lives, stop immersing ourselves with news, and just look for ways to continue bettering our lives and possibly help the situation get better by contributing. By reading 24/7 news articles and not living life just causes fear and panic in my opinion.

With that said I thought they would bail them out. I wouldn't be surprised if they went back to the drawing board and create another bill or use some of the money from the financial bailout.

I'm not trying to call anyone out here, but when is it enough? When do you have enough of the bad news? When do you decide that it's time to escape from the constant sensationalism of the news? Don't you get tired of just reading about the economy, watching the news, or reading about GM 24/7?

I'm honestly curious because I find no joy or knowledge in reading bad news 24/7.

yeah, but that was the house. The senate before was all for the fannie mae stuff. now it is the other way around.

It seems as though you are calling people out. Myself, in particular, considering I am the one always posting news articles. So in response...

(watching my p's and q's)

It is neither wise or nor intelligent to flat out ignore what is going on in this country. I would dare say that it is flat out irresponsible. Do I get tired of reading about the economy or watching the news? No I do not. Do I immerse myself in it? Absolutely not. Do I live in fear because of all of the 'sensationalism' in the news? Absolutely not. Do I live my life to the best of my ability? You bet I do. The news is not my life. Politics are not my life. Do I enjoy those topics? Yes I do. By suggesting that I am not 'living my life' because I pay attention to what is actually going on in this country is absurd.

I'm not calling anyone out. I'm curious because I never understood nor do I understand how anyone can constantly read bad news before becoming depressed.

From my perspective I feel message boards should be used as an escape from the world and not so much bringing the world into them. This is a place to discuss films, comics, video games, music, and literature. I am sincerely curious in how anyone can constantly read the news on the economy.
