General Q & A to our artists, and the more knowledgable fans of our fan artists! All in one convenient location.

- Super Mark

Feel free to ask your own question even if any other is not answered yet. An answerer can always hit "quote" if it's been a while. And if there is already a thread like this, my apologies. Hopefully, a Hype artist or two will check out this thread once in a while. Good "publicity" for them and a favor for those of us who like "local" art.

Here's my question:
Which of our fan artists (Hype only, please) does the most "crossover" pics, as in, Batman hanging out with Hell Boy, or Superman fighting Dr. Doom, or Blade meeting John Constantine?

Oh, and if there's anyone on here who "specializes" or at least does a lot of "lairs" and "hideouts" and "headquarters," I'd sure love to see those drawings. I haven't seen a lot of that on here. Espcially a "landscape" non-action piece.

Here is the thing. Comic Book artists do not, in general, like to do lairs, hideouts, etc. we do them because we have to. A scene requires it, Batman needs to recoup, et al. Comic Book artists, again in general, specialize in the human form. It is what appeals to guys like me the most. I love drawing spiderman, but hate drawing New York behind him. I do it. But I really am always thinking about the next pic of spiderman. see what i mean?

I can't think of too many people here of fthe top of my head, people are always coming and going and dropping out for a while. For both of your questions I would probably point you towards blacksuperman (or however he spells it). He's done a few batcaves if I recall and while I don't remember any cross-publisher crossovers, he does do multiple versions (tv, comic, movie) of DC characters together (ie welling with routh with reeve). Jeremy Sorrell, while he doesn't post new stuff, has a pretty awesome Batman w/ Black Suit Spidey that also comes to mind.

and where did you get this information? backgrounds are a very important part of a comic, it conveys the mood, location, time, place, adds drama, etc. If you dont take the same energy used for the character into your backgrounds, the panel suffers. Even if it is a simple outline with a gradient, it is still a vital piece. Besides, it takes more talent and patience to do a good background than simply drawing a character. You gotta beable to do perspective PERFECTLY.

of course, that just might be considering I myself, being an animator, focus on backgrounds as well as character animation. :yay:

I dont feel like throwing pics here, but go to my site, www.christopherfranklin.com to see some backgrounds (though not really "comic related").

I never said I do not do them. i said I do not specialize in them BIG DIFFERENCE! I draw backgrounds rather well, although, I am sure they can use some work. I just stated that comic book artists specialize in drawing people. For the most part. We prefer drawing spiderman. The city behind him we draw, but do not enjoy nearly as much.

I agree that comic artists who prefer drawing superheroes is probably the majority, however, you can't really speak for everyone. Also I think you're statement that they 'specialize' in drawing figures may be true of many artists, but to me the ideal artist does not specialize in any area but rather in the ability to draw anything and everything imaginable in a convincing way. If they were to 'specialize' in anything it would be visual storytelling.

how do i learn to draw hair?

Excellent. I'm going to check out Blacksupes, but first I want to see Batman with Spiderman over at Jeremy's. Thanks for pointing!

To get back to that whole lair thingy for heroes and such... I dont neccessairly "specialize" in creating hideouts and what not. But When I am creating a character I try not to just think of the charcter. I create worlds ad environments for them. Not because I have to but because sometimes the environment can make the story. It can make the character who he or she is. I notice plenty of characters who are great concepts but then placed into a horrible setting. Examples tend to be great charcters who end up residing in the same city over and over again. IE cities that are mock ups of gotham. Which is fine if it goes with the story line but I wouldnt be surprised if people placed their characters in these settings simply because it's the easiest place to put them. Sometimes I like to make characters specially made for loactions I visit. It helps with the creative process and what not.

I think that's great. I mean, in a world where some people had super powers, I don't think they'd all up and move to New York or Metropolis. Some would become protectors of Salt Lake City Utah, or rural Nebraska. Their "adventures" would surely be different from a global or big city hero.

I think if someone could pull off a suburban superhero it would be a great series. The problem with series like that i think might be finding a way to break the monotony of the evryday American consumer. lol. But i think its totally possible to make a good story line for that type of enviornment
