I am in my junior year at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. All illustration and cartooning majors have to do a thesis project based on a theme. This year's theme is kings and queens :-)whatever:) which got stretched to people acclaimed for a field or very well known for something. After much deliberation I chose Al Capone.

The prior 2 years I was a cartooning major, but didn't feel I was getting better as an artist so I switched to illustration where I quickly re-learned that I can't paint worth ****.

So on a ballsy move, I decided that for this big thesis I would do everything on the computer. I have Adobe and all that that entails but it wasn't doing it for me and I very recently (last week) downloaded the free trial of Corel Painter X.. Which is an amazing piece of software, despite a few glitches... And instantly clicked with it.. So in this thread I will be posting my progress as I do these 8 big paintings.

First test portrait- I just started using Painter so I wanted to test it out with a simple picture.

I was really happy with how it came out, better than anything I've ever actually painted.. So I started my actual project

{2nd image below}

The other 7 images will tell a story, But I wanted one to just be an overall portrait...

So That's all I have for now, I just started this and it's going to take me until at least March to finish.

I'm excited to get them professionally printed. :word:

Man, when I saw that topic of "kings and queens" all I could think of was how I would be the jerk who painted scenes from Queens and Brooklyn (Kings County).

Art-wise, that is some awesome stuff man. I hope you post all the final images (as well as more WIPs.) I'd love to see the way this turns out.

Great job :up:

Looks great so far. :up:

Me gusta the bottom one. Even if it's blue-it gives an interesting touch. :up:

Worked on it some more.. Painter certainly is a slow program, ugh, lol. Which really sucks cause it looks so great.

For this I stuck completely to the Oil > Thick Oil Bristle 20.. Not for any educated reason, it's just the first brush that started working for me. But there is a crazy amount of stuff to mess around with.

nicely done geo, the b/w really sets the mood

Finished the 4th one.

Really nice looking! The buildings look great. My one grip is with the background; The color never gets saturated and is as crisp and clear as the foreground. Remember, snowy days tend to look foggy because of the masking effect snow has on distances. The effect this picture gives off is that there is only snow right in front of our face. Other than that, it looks great.
