George Lucas calls Spider-Man 3 'silly'

Well, I'd put any SW movie over Spidey 3... Even with Jar Jar. He's not as bad as Peter dancing in a jazz club sliding on a stool :(

George just doesn't want us to suspect that his neck is a symbiote! :wow:

He called it silly? He must have tried hard to be that nice.

First of all, I have a lot of filmmaking experience so I'm reluctant to state that everything I would make is crap.

I am neither a fanboy or hate the prequels, ClarksomethingthatIforgot. I just think that he shouldn't call another film silly because, as a rival filmmaker, it makes him seem pompous and arrogant to insult another person's work in the way he did. He didn't say he disliked the film. He called it silly and methaphorically called it useless as if he were saying his films were much, much better. People have a right to their own opinions but at least have some class when criticizing others.

But really, George Lucas is a terrible screenwriter. He can make good stories but he's extremely bad at dialogue.

I just wonder how much of what your reading into this is personal bias?

"it makes him seem..."
"as if he were saying..."
" metaphoricaly called it useless"

If you believe that "silly" means "useless" thats all you, I'm pretty sure Charlie Chaplan, WC Fields, Mae West, John Cleese, ( you see where I'm going here) would disagree with that sentiment. Silly is not a bad thing. The world has room for silly.

What if you replace the word 'silly" with the synonym 'fun'? Same meaning but with potentially less personal bias attached to it. Still him slagging the movie, or him sayin it's essentially a 'popcorn' flick? And that folks think SW are popcorn flicks, which was not his intention.

( don't even get me started on the sheer pompousness of trying to tell the world that his space opera was intended to touch on the ur myth of the 'heros journey' and how the movies are allegroy for pretty much every epic myth ever. Talk about full of yourself, lol)

I don't see him trying to put his movie 'above' this one, I see him trying to put them in seperate genres, 'S'posed to be fun' and 'Turned out fun on the way to something else'. The diff between say the first Batman movie and the latest one.

After my disappointment with the prequel trilogy, I don´t really pay that much attention to what Lucas says anymore. And that´s sad.

Semantics of "silly" aside, for a filmmaker to call another filmmaker's work "silly" is nothing less than a direct insult, there really is no other way to spin it.

the movie was silly though.

but of course this is the genius who gave us jar jar so... lol

the movie was silly though.

That's your opinion, but my point was that everyone grasping at straws to reconcile the comment, e.g., "It was just a joke," or "It was a summer-movie-solidarity 'silly'," is just wishful thinking. Face it guys, your boy George just insulted your other boy Sam. You can't love them both anymore. You have to choose sides. Now.

I like episode 1-3 better. but the orignal 3 are good too. :unishr:

The prequels are different but I like them as much as the OT now. ROTS in particular is superb.

ROTS the 3rd prequel is much better than Spidey 3 imo. Of course Spidey 2 tromps all over AOTC :)

I didn't mean silly was a metaphor for stupid. He said a lot of stuff, not just silly. When you read the whole thing, he was flat out insulting the movie.

Although it has it's share of flaws,I loved Episode 3. I like when movies get dark and nasty like that. Tthat's probably one of the reason why I loved Spidey 3 as well.

Although there is a heavy dose of irony in his statement, all he had to say in prefix of said statement was, "Compared to the first two S-M movies...", and no one would have batted an eye. Same could be said of his second trilogy in comparison to his first.
At the end of the day, although his remark smacks of egomania, it is likely that this is what he meant. This is the first I have ever heard him comment on the quality of the franchise, therefore this is the one true opinion he has of the movies being on a qualitative decline. And you know what? He's right. The only thing Sony can do to shut up all critics is to roll out an unbelievable S-M4. :word:
