Gerald's Game

Large amounts of positive buzz coming from Fantastic Fest.

This was fantastic. Carla Gugino kills it and Mike Flanagan is really starting to impress me as an upcoming director. I wasn't a big fan of Oculus, but I enjoyed Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil. This is easily his best film yet and I honestly can't wait to see what him and David F. Sandberg do next. I've never read or heard of the novel, but if someone was tell me it was based on something by Stephen King I honestly wouldn't be surprised. This movie just oozes with his kind of dark malevolence, especially those nightmare/flashback sequences. There's some truly creepy yet striking imagery in this as well that I loved.

Those scenes with the Eclipse were jaw droppingly gorgeous and the use of the Moonlight Man was very effective.

8/10

Just caught the movie...... it was great. Just have a few questions on the climax ...

So ..... was it a dog that ate gerald or was it the tall dude who have eventually caught for stealing from the coffins ?

Very good movie, right up until it keeps the books awful ruinous epilogue. Still, great performances.

Whats wrong with the epilogue? Seemed fine to me.

The ending certainly didn't stick the landing, its kind of a mess, but the ending to the novel is just bad, so it's understandable. Still another great adaptation next to IT. 3 for 5 for the year so far for King adaptations and we still have 1922 to go, which looks to be good.

A little bit of both.

God this was great. One of the closest King adaptations ever. The slight changes were for the best, even.

The last 10 minutes were kind of weak, but nothing that ruined the movie for me. Also, can we talk about that scene where she
slices open her wrist and then forces the cuffs off by sliding them over her shredded hand?

I'm not usually squeamish when it comes to gore, but holy **** was that gruesome. Besides the disembowelment scene in Bone Tomahawk that was easily the most I've ever cringed while watching a film.

The gore was minimal so it didn't bother me. The Moonlight Man licking the girl's feet tho...pure nightmare fuel.

My review

Mike Flanagan continues to be one of the best horror directors working today and this is no exception. While this movie is about survival, in many ways it's more about living through trauma. Carla Gugino probably gave one of her best performance in this and so did Bruce Greenwood. There's some unexpected territory that this movie goes to and it's both refreshing and extremely uncomfortable. There's a scene that's incredibly gory even by gorefest standards yet doesn't revel in it, which was appreciated. I do have to say, it's a bit slow at points and I would have made it a little shorter. Also the end of this movie is kinda disappointing only because they introduce a plot element that I was so excited for, and I wish that could have been it's own movie. Overall, it's another fine horror movie that came out this year.
8.5/10

The practical effects work on the Moonlight Man was incredible btw.

All things serve the beam.

9/10.

I loved this little nod to the Dark Tower.

And the rest of the movie was great. I always love me some Carla Gugino and she brought her A-game. And Bruce Greenwood killed it as usual.
