Sounds strange but... Give that a watch first. It was a highly influential film on the first handful of Connery Bonds. You watch that and you can see what they were going for to a big degree with adapting Bond for the screen.

The Connery films are of their times so, yeah, expectations on a number of fronts probably should be calibrated in comparison to something both as modern and as good as CASINO ROYALE was.

Still, I hope you can get the reason for their popularity in the early 1960's... I mean other than the constant smoking, day drinking and misogyny naturally.

But take those out and what do you got?
