Ghost Rider - The NEW Ongoing, Vol 3 (Possible Spoilers) - Part 1

I agree fully with your dislike for the southern accent Midnyte. It made Johnny sound more like an angsty Nick Cage JB rather than the 90’s Blaze I learned to love…but then I read the Williams interview on VU and he said he wanted to start over and stray from the convolutedness of the GR mythos. To me, it made sense then to have a new Blaze, especially since no one in the 616 universe ages apparently.

Three More points:
Ixnay
“concerning the Wolverine issues, I've only managed to find issues 2, 5, and 6. Do the Ghost Riders show up in #s 3, 4, and 7?”
GR isn’t in issue 7, to help you out.

I looked into the Age of X Universe comics and I believe Ghost Rider is only in issue 1 for a couple of panels. The Avengers were fighting some mutants and then GR was killed by Chamber (for some reason).GR can never catch a break when he’s on a super team. He dies in this team, He was the only member of the New Fantastic Four to die in the last What If NEWER Fantastic Four (with Iron Man replacing him ie. “Newer”), and he missed fighting Godzilla with The Champions.

Last point, At the end of GR .1 was this tasty preview

Johnny Blaze in Space?! and is that GR is another super team?? hope she does not get the butt end of the stick...

That last panel made me even more confused. I have no idea where this comic is heading.

Still haven't gotten to read Avengers: Crime and Punishment, Midnyte Sun?

I had Amazon bundle it with some other comics in order to get the free shipping and I have no idea now when it's coming. I think it's coming late June or Early July.

Finally got to read issue 1...

Blackout.
Deathwatch.

Gone. Like it was nothing.

I shed a tear. A single tear.

I plan on getting this with GR #2 next week. Curiosity about Rob Williams work has me crossing over from Daken Dark Wolverine to this book. How many people can say that? ;)

Just read Ghost Rider #1.

This series is shaping up to be pretty interesting. I'm definitely going to pick this series up as it looks like it's building to something really big. Since Daniel Way had started writing the current series, every story arc seems to involve the destruction of the entire world. Rob William's new story looks like it will fall in those same footsteps. His writing style is not what I'm used to, but I'm not hating it at all. I enjoyed the small Shadowland Ghost Rider (minus the southern drawl) and I look forward to issue #2.

Little things I noticed:

Did anybody notice that in the end, some of those foot soldiers looked similar to the soldiers that GR took out in the Shadowland crossover? Did anybody notice Blackout throwing a car?! Since when did Blackout get so powerful? Also, the early reviews I read said that Blackout and Deathwatch were killed, but it didn't show them being executed, it just showed her slashing away at them.

The new GR intrigues me also, I'm glad that for most of the panels, the GR does not have hair coming from the skull as that Kubert cover art in Issue #2. Also a great plus is that Williams is using the bike again as a solo weapon the way the 90's GR implemented it.

Once the series goes back to Blaze, I think it would be a great opportunity to revive: Skinner, Reverend Stiege, Nightmare, the Darkhold, Lilith, and Zarathos.

For new readers: I think this series is worth taking a look at for GR fans for sure. For those picking up the series for the first time, it is not at all difficult to read. It introduces you to the character in a very simple way and it picks up real quick after that.

I dunno if this is to make it seem that they can come back in the future (not that death has stopped them before anyway), or just a way to limit the gore in the book by having the beheadings off screen, so to speak

I support this 1000%. I miss Skinner. One of my favorite villains from the 90s.

Skinner and Blaze have some history together in the SOV series of the 90's, so now would still be a great time to see him revived. They can't have him just as a supporting character. I'd like to see him as a main threat, disguised as another person, maybe even taking in another family and alter ego. Would be a great change of pace to see GR fighting solo instead of trying to save the world for the hundredth time.

I think Williams and Clark depicted them being slashed at because they didn't want to offend 90's fans. I would be pissed if Blackout or Deathwatch was just killed off again without them at least putting up any fight (or attempted escape).

It was nice to see Deathwatch come back long enough to pour a cup of coffee. I don't think he was seen outside of a few cameos in New Avengers after the whole escape from the Raft thing. Still don't know how he came back again.

Blackout was having a decent return, too. Gonna miss that hat.

I'm sure it was a coloring error, but I'm pretty sure Deathwatch had red / orange hair and a solid mask. This DW had instead black hair and a soft mask.

Also, when Deathwatch engorges on pain and suffering, if he got wounded, he explodes. So I guess she didn't hit him hard enough. I don't know why writers don't want to actually see these enemies as a threat anymore. There was a time Deathwatch rivaled Kingpin.

Not to sure about this Lady Ghost Rider I would rather read a 'Brothers Ghost Rider' comic with Dan and Johnny both Ghost Rider travelling around kicking ass like the brothers from Supernatural.

If I recall correctly, from one of those source books comics Marvel likes to release over every little event and change, Deathwatch escaped the Raft with Blackout and Scarecrow. No mention of how they go their, or how both DW and SC was alive after being all kinds of dead for so long.

Plus who knows, resurrection could have changed that aspect of his dead. Or the writer just didn't remember that bit when he chopped his paingasming head off.

Agreed, together they're an unstoppable force. It would be like Spirits of Vengeance all over again.

Right, you'd think they do their homework before they put a major GR villain in the comic..but NOPE.

Like anyone remembered Ghost Rider in 2002. His villains were their for fodder, to be able to add some bulk. Blackout even got a few lines and... that was it.

I got issue 2 yesterday.

It was rather anti-climactic. You learn about Adam's true goal, which doesn't sound all that bad. In fact it goes against everything Mephisto stands for, which is probably a good thing. A glimpse at the future reveals a bald-headed society living in a utopia without sin.

The only thing thats strange is Blazes character. At one moment he's joking, then he's angry, then he's a little worried. The wise cracks he makes are all really lame and annoying.

A plus is that they are publishing a letters section again in the spirit of the old comics. I thought issue 1's letters section was a fluke, but so far they are being consistent about that.

Anybody else pick it up?

The candy store by my job didn't have it. And I'm not spending $5 bus fair just to buy a $4 comic from my "local" comic shop.

Hey Midnyte, Are they publishing any letters that are critical of the .....shall we say....new appearance of the GR or are they just publishing letters that are pating them on their back for their groundbreaking genius? And if they are publishing critical letters, are they just writing those comments off as backwards neanderthal hicks who cant comprehend their (the writers) superior intellect?

I would like to read the letters page but im not buying anymore GR until the new GR is gone. Just my personal, im not giving them my money for what they are currently dishin out.

I liked the first issue better than the second. I was hoping there would be more of a past for the new Ghost Rider than we got; I was hoping for a gray, complicated character that fell into the Adam's gift/trap of becoming Ghost Rider. I'm not jazzed about her being some kind of shut in or from Adam's 'cult' or whatever it is he has going.

But the artwork was good and the interplay between Blaze and Mephisto was entertaining. Glad that Blaze saw right through Mephisto's motivation. I'll give this one a couple more issues at least.

I just looked at it again, and it seems for the most part, the letters are of avid fans who are looking forward to the new series. Some want less continuity baggage, and others are begging for old GR villains to make appearances. The editor makes a reference that this new GR will be 'cleaning up' the old mess that Blaze left behind. Will be interesting to see what she does.

BTW, don't let the cover fool you, the GR doesn't really have hair, it's only on the Kubert covers.

I won't lie, I kind of like the hair.

Thanks for the info Midnyte.
And Im not tryn to dog on those givin the new GR a chance, its just that I am an avid fan, thats why I dont like it.
Jeez never thought Id find myself yearning for the Ketch days. But anyway thanks again.

As one avid fan to another, even if I'm not sure where the story is heading, I still give it a chance.

I'm so desperate for a good GR story, I'll pick up almost anything attached to the GR name...the biggest disappointment being the Top Cow / Marvel crossover that would have had GR face off against the Darkness! What a waste of a perfect opportunity.
