GI Joe movie thoughts

Vin Diesel IS Destro.

Simply use CGI to make his face silver and BAM ..... Destro.

Josh Lucas as Duke? I can't see it. He comes off as a smarmy dick, even when he's not trying to. He's like the anti-Duke. He's like Firefly or something.

Oh, I don't know that he always comes off as a dick...just that he plays one a lot. I think he has a pretty good range as an actor. Like in Glory Road I thought he played a pretty effective coach who embodied some Duke-ish qualities. Match that with the few times he has played military and I think you could get a good performance out of him for this.

Back in the early 90's I pictured:
Ed Harris as Duke
Dylan McDermott as Flint

now if producers go the comedy route then:
Sean William Scott as Shipwreck
Dane Cook as Bazooka
Leslie Nielsen as Gen. Hawk
John Cena as Sgt.Slaughter
Rick Moranis as Cobra Commander

I don't like any of your choices. Michael Biehn would be good as Duke but not Hawk. Would anyone really believe Biehn as the fourth highest rank in the military??? I wouldn't. Before anyone blasts me for too many characters let me explain. This list was made with at least a trilogy in mind. Most of these characters will not have a major role but simple setting roles. For example:
Blizzard, Snow Job, Iceberg, etc. are for snow scenes only. Torpedo, Wet Suit, and Deep Six are water scenes. The Dreadnocks are maybe the main villains for one film, with the exception of Zartan, and maybe not even in the rest.

Others who many would not like in the films are on my list because of their overall importance to the GI Joe-Cobra story or their relation to main characters. Globuluss is in it because he is the ultimate force behind Cobra. In comparison, he is the Emperor and Cobra Commander is Vader. Globuluss IS Satan.

I know many will scoff at the idea of Sgt. Slaughter and his mercenaries(Red Dog, Taurus, and Mercer) being in this but they along with the Dreadnocks, the Ninja's, and Globuluss' faction will add a necessary element to what I want to be a primary Military/War epic.

Martial arts can make a good movie great. That is why I have all the ninja characters on the list. That and the fact that they are all pupils of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Except Dojo, who may be the third side to the pyramid with Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, and Black Star, the top ninja and opposing force to Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow.

I think there is enough base material here for at least two high quality trilogies. A third could be made if the story delves into space and uses The Six Lunatrix Empires and the following villains:

Carcass Lobotomaxx Predacon Iguanus Slythor Warwolf

Other groups that could be used: Oktober Guard, B.A.T., The Iron Grenadiers, the whole Street Fighter angle, and the dead world conquers clones(Hannibal, Alexander, Napolean, Caesar, Ghengis, etc..)

The story could finish beyond space and time with the G.I. Joe: Alternate Universes concept.

If Jason Voorhies can get 12 movies so can G.I. Joe. The only difference is the G.I. Joe movies would be good.

JOES(in order by rank) - 54

Warrant Officer 5 Torpedo
Warrant Officer 4 Flint
Sgt. Beachhead
i always though flint would outrank torpedo as he was dukes second in command not torpedo also in the series when beach-head was intoduced in the arise serpentor arise miniseries wasn't he supposed to OUTRANK the majority of the joes who had more expierence than him?:ninja:

He does out rank most of them. The GI Joe cartoon doesn't really follow the military chain of command. That is one area where the movie would have to differ, IMO, for it to succeed. Anyone remotely intrested in a G.I. Joe movie does not want a corny, cartoonish movie. The want a bit more reality than in the cartoon, actually they want a lot more. The makers of a G.I. Joe movie should really watch what Spielberg does with Transformers.

A lot of the older G.I. Joe characters are not as high ranked as they should be. Rock 'n Roll, Roadblock, and Grunt come to mind. They all probably have been enlisted longer than most but long-term, career military men often times get 'busted down' in rank at some point. This can happen for a variety of reason from showing up late one too many times or making fatal combat errrors. That is probably the case for alot of the G.I. Joe's.

There are a lot of surprises in the G.I. Joe rank order.

1.)Falcon outranks Duke. Colonel Falcon is outranked only by Gen. Hawk, Gen. Flagg, Adm. Haul, and Gen. Joe himself.

2.)Gung Ho is the second highest ranking enlisted member in G.I. Joe.

3.) Flint is a Warrant Officer, who knew?

4.) Mercer, one of Sgt. Slaughter's renegades, actually out ranks Slaughter by two grades. Sgt. Slaughter is an E-7 and Mercer is an E-9. Duke and Gung Ho are the only other E-9's.

5.)Shipwreck is a Chief Petty Officer and a Navy S.E.A.L..

6.) Dr. Mindbender, Destro, and Baroness actually all out rank Cobra Commander. They created him just like they created Serpentor.

7.)There are alot of Dreadnoks!

8.) Storm Shadow is actually an E-8 in the G.I. Joe ranks, same as Snake Eyes. Only Duke, Gung Ho, Mercer, and Sgt. Stalker are higher than the two ninjas.

Knowing about the military ranking system and how the military works puts a real different spin on G.I. Joe. And I think it is a necessary one for this movie(s) to be good.

i know falcon outranks his half brother duke from watching gi joe the movie btw i know stalker has the rank sgt. added to his name due to the negative conotations to the term why was it added to beach-head's to clarify his rankala agent scarlett?

Yeah, you're going to have to reword that or somethig because you lost me after gi joe the movie.

ok the term stalker has a bad meaning nowadays thats why hasbro added sgt to stalkers codename why did they add sgt to beach-heads codname to clarify his rank like they added agent to scarletts?

How did a jag-off slacker like Falcon ever reach the rank of Lt?

Oh come on .... forget the acting .... He has the look, the voice and the body!!

Diesel IS Destro!

I heard Diesel and thought for a second it could work. Now, I know it won't especially in a trilogy or more.

As for who could be Destro, I am not sure. First we have to examine who Destro is. A European capitalist who founded Cobra and with the help of Baroness and Dr. Mindbender and created Cobra Commander to lead the army.

Whoever plays Destro does not have to be bald, he where's the mask/helmet thing. Destro argueabley IS the top villain in G.I. Joe, whether the story revolves around him or not is another question. Regardless, you need somone a little bit better for Destro.

One name I came up with, if he felt up to it, is Sean Connery. Connery in the Destro uniform is good with or without the mask.

jrpstarwars (I guess you'll respond to this when you return), I admire your knowledge and love for G.I.Joe (you should check the Transformer Continuity Thread to see I am much the same for it's sister series). However you set your sights WAY to high. 54 characters over three films . Sorry it will never happen. Just like Transformers, even though I hate Bay's version, would have to be condensed to 5 or 6 characters on each side...so would Joe. I'd assume there would be some rotation throughout movies, mostly on the villain side (since they'd likely die in greater number). But 54 characters for Joes, 48 for Cobra. Sorry, that is way too much. The G.I.Joe would likely be about a special opps team of 4 or 5 mainstays going against 4 or 5 villain terrorists equiped with foot soldiers. You could probably squeeze in a few background cameos and that's it. No one is going to take an oversized 100 character movie, there is almost no way to manage that successfully.

Every GI Joe fan should know Duke is outranked by several Joes.

The reason I say that is that it's been on Duke filecards as long as I can remember that Duke wants to be where the action is, and constantly turns down promotions. That's why many Joes follow him despite outranking him, because they have the utmost respect for him, and know he wouldn't ask them to do anything he wouldn't do himself. That part of Duke's character should be in any live action adaptation.

jrp, why would you need all the Dreadnoks? Zartan, and the original three of Torch, Buzzer and Ripper are more than enough.

54 Joes really doesn't work. If anyone's going to buy that the Joes are an elite anti terrorism squad, then their numbers would have to be small. Special ops. units like that tend to be rather small for the sake of quick deployment and stealth. Cobra, being a massive terrorist network, can have as many members as you want, but only the inner circle (Cobra Commander, Barroness, Destro, Dr. Mindbender, Xamot and Tomax) and some high ranking or especially important grunts (Stormshadow) should get substantial screentime.

Also, my thoughts on Cobra Commander: They have to use his comics origin. It's just too perfect not to use. For those unfamiliar with it, he started out as a pennyless used car salesman who had a mental breakdown after his older brother, Dan, died in a car crash. Years before, his brother had lost all of his money due to the ruling of a particularly incompitant and corrupt judge who deemed an accident that burned down the Veteran's hospital he ran to be insurance fraud. Dan sank into depression and became an alchoholic, resulting in the crash. He tracked down the surviving member of the family that was killed in the same crash as his brother, a mentally disturbed soldier who would later be known only by the code name Snake Eyes. Blaming the deaths of their families on the corruption and flaws of "the system," the two became vigilantes, going from city to city, state to stae, enacting their own brand of justice. When Cobra Commander tried to kill the aformentioned judge for revenge, Snake Eyes left, feeling that his partner was genuinely insane and that he (Snake Eyes) needed to find a different path. After a failed atempt to kill his former friend while he was studying in a buddhist temple in Japan, Cobra Commander retired from his vigilante crusade and settles down. After his wife gave birth, she learned of her husband's past. Fearing that she would take their son away, he kidnapped the child and dissapeared. He traveled the country, gaining money through a series of pyramid schemes and forming a cult/polliical movement of people who shared his veiws on government and corperate America. This group would eventually grow into the terrorist organization known as Cobra. He made his base of operations a small, financially struggling mid western town called Springfeild. He was able to use his wealth and manpower to get Cobra agents possitions in the local government and transform the town into a gated community and terrorist training camp.

This is, I think, the best version of the character, having a great deal of depth. Much better than that weird "Cobra-La" crap from the cartoon.

Cool - I support the idea of Michael Biehn as General Hawk and Alicia Witt as Scarlett.

I think most people like Witt for Scarlett just because she's a natural redhead. Scarlett's a hard@ss. I don't think Witt has that in her. I really think Jessica Biel is a much better choice for Scarlett. Her Abigail Wistler showed elements of Scarlett, she even used a bow. Witt is more Cover Girl than Scarlett.

GI joe would work great as a comedy film.

It could. It shouldn't. Like I said, it should be based primairily on the G.I. Joe comics, which are pretty hardcore war/spy thriller stories.
