Gods & Men: The Ancient Myths RPG: SEASON I
Screen Name: SuperFerret
Character you have created (include known alias or nicknames here as well): Beardless Brottor Balderk
Race/Culture (What race is your character, and, if human, what culture does your character hail from, for example is your character Roman, Athenian, Celtic, Norse, Spartan, Persian, etc) (GMs must approve of any race not part of the big 5: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc): Dwarf
Racial Traits (traits specific to your race; a list can be found in the second post of the OOC thread) (For races not listed, GMs must create traits for that race first before player approval): Darkvision (able to see in the darkness up to 60 feet, but in black and white only); Toxin Resistance (dwarven toughness allows them to resist most standard poisons, but it does not make them immune to them. They are just not as affected as strongly as a man would be, and large doses can still prove fatal); Stonecunning (due to spending most of their lives under the Earth, dwarves have a natural affinity for stone-workings and the like. Thus they are able to notice unusual stonework if they are close by it, such as stone traps, non-magical stone secret doors, unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, etc); Depth-Sense (Dwarves have the innate ability to sense how deep they are underground, but this is not accurate and usually falls in a window of a few miles); average life-span of 150 years
Character Class (Somewhat similar to the classes in the CAH RPG, but with some differences) (Choose One):
Paladin (these holy knights are champions of their chosen deity and are able to wield low-level Protective magicks to compliment their martial prowess. However they must remain pure and true to their god and their god's doctrine. Any wavering, no matter how minor, will force them to lose favor with their deity and thus lose their spells. Once favor is lost the paladin must seek atonement to regain favor with their divine patron. Evil Paladins are called Blackguards and wield low level Necromantic spells instead of Protective magic; Paladins cannot be of Neutral alignment)
Patron Deity (only required for those under the Paladin heading or those who are a priest, cleric, or other divine agent; others may choose one if they wish to flesh out their character more) (Your Patron Deity MUST be from the pantheon significant to your character's culture, I.E. no Odin worshipping Egyptian Priestess) (Elves and Dwarves have their own pantheons which are briefly detailed under the Mounting Heavens of Celestia with the race's evil deities mentioned in the Nine Hells of Baator): Brottor heeds the call of Moradin, chief god of the Dwarven race.
Magic (if your character is a Mystic, choose one of the following schools of magic to specialize in. NOTE: A player will only be able to cast spells that deal with their school, forsaking all others, so choose carefully) (Descriptions of the schools can be found in a reserved post in the OOC Thread): Brottor, like all dwarves dislikes the use of magic, even though he has some minor power in the Protective school.
Speech Color and/or Font (actually say what you're using, i.e. Arial Black; don't go "Like this", or what not): Gray Bold
Character Alignment (Good/Evil/Neutral): Good, like any self-respecting paladin.
Character Personality (Give information on how your character acts, what he/she believes in, how they handle situations): Brottor is a fairly typical dwarven paladin in most regards. He is honest, loyal, honorable and serious. However, he does have the ability to laugh at himself, and he is also very humble, two things that not many a dwarf or paladin can say of themselves.
Origin Info/Details (don't be blunt, be as thorough as possible):
Brottor is an oddity. The Dwarven race is known for their beards, a trait all of their number, even women, share, yet Brottor Balderk, who was once a potential paragon of his race, lacks his whiskers. The story of how Brottor gained his beardless status is a long one, but it is worth telling for sake of exposition, as well as showing how Brottor, a proud Dwarven warrior, wound up as an outcast who has a human wife and two half-orcish children.
Our story begins with a much younger Brottor, who still had his long golden beard at the time, while he was on a mission with a Dwarven war party to raid a nearby camp of hobgoblins. This bit of history is crucial, as it is the event that lead Brottor onto the path of the paladin, a path that would render him beardless one day.
Byron Durmin, the dwarf who was leading the raid, had concocted a plan to oust the hobgoblins using subterfuge and stealthy guerilla tactics. Brottor, being almost abnormally honorable, refused to go along with the plan, and thus strode out alone into the middle of the hobgoblin war camp, challenged the Goblinoid chieftain to a duel and engaged him in one on one combat. During his battle with the hobgoblin leader, his companions were beset upon by the rest of the warband, and were slaughtered by the sheer numbers of the humanoids. Brottor, however, was spared, a 'gratitude' given to him by the hobgoblin chief. He was kept imprisoned by the goblinoids and suffered many an indignity at their hands. Three months passed before another dwarven war party attacked the hobgoblins, routing them and rescuing Brottor. While recovering from his wounds, Brottor visited a high priest of Moradin, and requested that he be allowed to become an official paladin of the order. He was refused, for Durmin was the brother of the High Priest, and Brottors actions, however honorable they were, led to Durmins demise. Again shamed, Brottor ritualistically shaved his beard and exiled himself from his Dwarven homeland deep beneath the Alps.
Over the next three decades Brottor traveled Europe, slowly growing into his new profession as a protector of innocents and honorable combatant of evil, and started to slowly discover that he was in fact becoming a paladin through some grace of the gods.
Attributes (Select one from each category) (some races are greater or weaker than a human in specific categories and will be noted below or in the racial traits section of the OOC thread):
Strength Level: Peak (Dwarves in peak condition are slightly stronger than a man)
Speed/Reaction Timing Level: Weak (Dwarves are slightly slower than a man in peak condition)
Endurance at MAXIMUM Effort/Durability: Peak (Dwarves are more sturdy than a man in peak condition)
Agility: Weak (Dwarves are less agile than a man in peak condition)
Intelligence: Above-Average (All non-human character races described above are treated normally, although keep in mind that an Orcish super-genius is a truly unique character)
Fighting Skill: Mastered
Resources: Average
Notable Equipment (Items your character has on them of relevance, such as thieving tools if they're a rogue, holy items if they're a priest, magic weapons and/or armor, magic items, etc; we assume you're character has basic stuff, like rations, waterskin, and a torch or lantern; be as specific as possible as well as realistic as possible, I.E. if your character is carrying a ton of stuff their mobility and endurance will be sorely hindered; also keep in mind that magic items are rare, expensive, and difficult to make) (For ideas for notable equipment, and magic items, check out the link below the app): Brottor wears masterwork half-plate armor, and uses common mundane equipment, all of masterwork quality. His one and only magical item is his Holy Avenger Warhammer, named ThRak (a Dwarven name meaning Hammer of Oaths). ThRak has a powerful enchantment on it, which not only helps Brottor hit harder and more often in combat, but also protects him and those nearby from all but the most powerful magical spells. ThRak, being a blessed weapon also harms unholy creatures such as demons, devils, and the undead much more than a similarly enchanted, but unblessed, weapon would.
Weaknesses (If your character has any specific weakness, such as a vampire's weakness to sunlight (among other things) or a Faerie's weakness to iron, list them here): Brottor has no actual physical weaknesses, but his strong sense of loyalty and honor can be used against him.
Supporting Characters (Does your character have a significant other? A mother? A Friend? Who are they, what do they have to do with your character?): Brottor is an exile and he travels alone.
Describe using proper English grammar what you think you can bring to the RPG: I can bring a vast knowledge of fantasy worlds, and years of role-playing experience. Plus, I helped design this game.
How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG: As many as life allows.
Do you know how to post pictures on the hype boards: Aye.
Sample Post (Minimum Four decent-sized paragraphs containing dialogue):
Brottor Balderk, Dwarven paladin, stroked his hairless chin in thought as he gazed out over the rolling hills of Scotland from his vantage point atop a rocky outcropping. He had climbed up here to gain a better view with which he would scout the area, but the fog was heavy today, obscuring Brottors view and likely fostering the band of goblins that Brottor knew were out there, somewhere. He had yet to actually lock eyes upon a goblin here, he had seen the evidence. Hastily and ill-prepared camps, desolate by the time Brottor found them, but the scraps of food and the barely covered dung indicated a goblin presence. As did the charred remains of a human family in that ransacked little cottage. And the smell. The air reeked of goblin.
Brottor stroked his chin again, reminding himself of the disgrace that led him to shave his beard upon each dawn; exiling himself from the rest of Dwarvenkind. It came as a result of another encounter with the Goblinoid races, Brottors first, to be exact. A troop of hobgoblins; bigger, meaner cousins to the kind Brottor was tracking now; had taken up residence in his homeland. Brottor was but a small part of a platoon of Dwarven soldier that embarked to end the hobgoblin occupation. It would prove to be a fateful mission, as Brottors own unyielding sense of honor brought about not only the massacre of the dwarves, but Brottors own humiliation as the hobgoblin chieftain spared his life and imprisoned him. He was eventually rescued and the hobgoblins eliminated, but Brottors shame was complete.
Never again, he had vowed, hence his always traveling alone and relentless pursuit of goblinkind wherever they hid.
Moving hand from his chin to rest upon the head of his hammer hanging from his belt, Brottor turned to step off of the boulder on which he stood. A whistling sound and sharp pain whisked across Brottors left ear, nearly sending him tumbling forward off the rock. Reaching up, Brottor winced slightly as his fingers felt blood. Two more whistles came, but Brottor was ready and ducked under them and they soon revealed themselves to be black-shafter arrows as the stuck in the ground. Goblin arrows.
Finally. Brottor whispered, his voice low and even. Turning to face the direction from which the arrows originated, he reached to his belt and retrieved ThRak, his warhammer. A mixture of ornate and utilitarian design, the hammer was clearly both a holy item and an instrument of war. In Brottors hands; the hands of a Paladin of Moradin, chief god of Dwarvenkind; ThRak, the Hammer of Oaths, was a weapon of great power and had already smote a number of vile creatures. Gripping the hammer in his right hand and bringing up his shield to deflect another incoming arrow, Brottor knew that that number would rise, and soon.
