Godzilla (2014) - Part 10

Every modern blockbuster is a tease? I'm not seeing that. Got great looks at Jaegers early on in Pacific Rim. They've already given away the full design of Godzilla in a Fiat commercial so I don't see the need for an hour+ long reveal in his own movie.

Edit: So everyones fine with getting a quarter length of Godzilla in this? OK.

If you want to constantly see Godzilla go watch an old movie of his. I want to see the story and then see him kick ass. It's already done, printed and viewed so no use crying now.

I've liked everything I've seen from the movie thus far so I'm still excited. Just disappointed he doesn't make more of an appearance.

Godzilla films themselves only have like 20 mins, tops of the big guy in them.

And to be fair, Alien and Jaws were original movies. Nobody knew would those things would look like until the movie showed them. Godzilla has a long history. I don't feel the need to tease something we already know.

Thing is, this movie has new monsters, new places and new people. I want to find out about the world he's in and then see him destroy it. In the old ones we all know everything about the world and the monsters, there's no surprise. Here there's almost nothing we know. I'd rather learn about it, see it grow, see what happens with the MUTOs then see them wreck the **** out of it.

Terror of MechaGodzilla, Godzilla vs The Thing, and Invasion of Astro Monsters don't have Godzilla in it that much and they're considered some of the best films in the series.

Oh well tough ****

Aliens also took a while to show the xenomorphs, but when you saw them, oh man.

That point is insignificant imo , if it works it works, doesn't matter what it is, it's all in the execution.

And to be fair, we're dealing with a BRAND NEW Godzilla.

Eh, any time we get a brand new Godzilla, he's pretty much the same. I'm all for the slow build because it means that these very interesting seeming human characters will get more development. It's funny that someone's saying that most Godzilla movies have about 20 minutes of him, because that means that 50% of my watching time during most Godzilla movies is watching Godzilla, and 50% is fast forwarding through pointless human stuff.

I don't see much of a problem here Poetic Chaos. In the first hour, you get teasers and glimpses of Godzilla-(Basically the build up). All while the movie itself is establishing its own world, main characters, and telling Godzilla's origin.(Along with the origin of the Muto creatures)
Blowing your load early on when you have a story to tell first is bad story telling. That may not sit well with some folks, but like the original film, it's crafting its own world and doing its own thing in what will hopefully provide a satisfying experience.

The last hour, Godzilla is then slowly unleashed and becomes more and more involved until his big reveal, to which where he takes the spotlight and leads everything into the third big act. I know people want Godzilla all in their faces, but let Gareth tell his story.

As long as Godzilla and even the MUTOs are what drives the human emotion/drama and said human drama is compelling enough, I really don't see the problem.

Doesn't mean the opposite can't be true. Pacific Rim was about as subtle as a hammer to the face, and I dug the hell out of it. I don't want Godzilla to be like an all-kaiju Pacific Rim though. It should have a very different approach.

I sense the approach of Godzilla 2014 Part 11 coming inbound soon, where are the running gifs of Bryan Cranston? lol

So, Chris 55 of TohoKingdom talked about this experience of him attending the premiere. :)

I can't post MY thoughts/review until tomorrow night but I CAN post about the reactions of the person next to me. It was some chick at the premiere last night who had NEVER seen a Godzilla movie before. Totally new, didn't know anything about the movie at all or the franchise. Some of her reactions (and she got shushed a few times since she was loud)

OH ****!!

AAAAAHHH!!

GET EM GODZILLA!!

YEAH! WOO! THIS IS AWESOME!!

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!

I sat next to that for 2 hours.

Gojira...Is Coming.

thank God, that was one thing i was worried about... i cant stand that shaky cam crap at all... it drove me nuts in Man of Steel
If they used shaky cam in Zilla it would have been understandable, I think. The documentary, found footage type thing which could apply to a 'realistic' interpretation of a monster invasion. But yeah, it will be good to see the big guy in all his glory.

I actually liked Godzilla 2000 a lot more than I remembered. Nothing special, but pretty solid.

I don't get how showing the monster is "blowing your load." The load should be a lot more than the visual of the monster. I'm not saying there shouldn't be a human story or that there needs to be more Godzilla fighting other monsters. I'm just saying I would be fine seeing Godzilla in full early on rather than a tail, spike, leg, eye etc. for a majority of the movie. I don't see how that would negatively effect the plot.

But does it negatively effect the film to wait to fully unleash the monster until the climax? There's quite a bit of time between "We have a T-Rex." and the T-Rex attacking in Jurassic Park but no one complains about having to wait a while to see the T-Rex. Even Pacific Rim doesn't just open with Otachi and the Hong Kong fight.
