If some have problems with Aaron Johnson's performance, it probably has more to do with the script than him (haven't seen the movie yet). It seems not a lot of you here are familiar with his work outside of Kick-Ass, but he's proven himself repeatedly to be extremely talented.

Nowhere Boy? Stellar
Kick-Ass 1 & 2? Great performances
Albert Nobbs? Great
Savages? Completely different register and he nails it
Anna Karenina? Haven't read the book but thought he did a very nice job

What fascinates me is how much range he has plus how he can just morph into another character, he looks like a kid in Kick-Ass, in Savages, he just feels completely different, same in Nobbs or whatever.

Just saying, his character is like the typical, generic soldier guy (or simply guy) who has to find his way back to his family, relatable for the audience, not much else. It's not like every review is trashing him either, you've got those saying he's a sympathetic & likable & relatable lead, and others saying he's wooden, which is like the laziest overused adjective used to qualify a performance when the actor is just not doing Jim Carrey facial expressions every 5 minutes.

The ads aren't even focusing on him over here, it's mostly Cranston and Gojira himself. People are thinking Cranston is the lead of the flick. My dad was even like, "so he's the Raymond Burr of this movie."

Friends wife saw it yesterday since they had it on thier navy base and she said it was awesome ... That's good enough for me lol

I don't understand Rotten Tomatoes. When you type in 'Godzilla Rotten Tomatoes' or 'Godzilla RT' the 1998 film pops up with its lowscore instead of the new film.

To those of you seeing the movie today I am very excited for you and look forward to hearing your thoughts when you get back :)

Admit that some of you were when you were reading about those Nerdist and Alamo Drafthouse footage screenings ;) .

From what I've heard, the parts shown in those screenings remain awesome in context.

Just tell us how the atomic breath looks, and we shall be fine.

Doing good at 85% as of right now. Of course, there is still a lot of reviews to come though.

Would be great if it was able to hold on in the 80s, but it's usually very difficult to do so.

Just got out of the screening. I know there are now technically 30 Godzilla movies, but I don't count 98 because that's NOT Godzilla. That said, I just saw the 29th GODZILLA movie. :D

Ask me anything. ALMOST anything. :ninja:

What kind of rating would you give it?

All I'd like to know is a letter grade :)

Edit: and a ranking amongst the other 29

Initial viewing? There were a few things that bothered me, but not to really detract from the entire film. I'm debating between a 9.75 or a 10 (probably the former).

My ranking amongst the series? Barely and I mean barely behind the original Gojira. Again, first showing experience. I'm still on edge after watching that!

I'll have a review up (possibly) tomorrow.

Does Godzilla go out of his way to protect humans, or does he just ignore them?

Did you see it in 3D? I'm not a big fan of 3D but the local Imax only has 3D showings of course and the movie looks dark enough as is without wearing the glasses. I just wonder if it's decent 3D or the bad kind where you can't notice it.

what does the atomic breath look like? is it blue?

Was it the Cinematic event the trailers were promising? And above all, was it creative in the way the military was trying to handle these giant monsters?

You're too late! I know everything!

But I'll bite, did Godzilla actually destroy any military vehicles?

For me, YES.

In regards to your 2nd question, basically, the military's way of handling the situation is to help the civilians and say "**** it, let the monsters fight and see who comes out on top (hence the 'Let them fight' line). They're pretty much incompetent in that regard.

The best SINGLE moment of the film for me. Yes, it's blue.
YES, HIS FINS LIGHT UP. As for how it looks like: it looks enough like a beam to be in the same vein as the Heisei films, but it has a Napalm-like look to it. Think Smaug's fire breath in The Hobbit, but blue.

I saw it in a TruIMAX theater the same way I saw Man of Steel in so I can't comment on it.

It's kinda interesting. He (inadvertently)
kills thousands in Hawaii when rising out of the ocean
but at the end of the movie, he's sorta deemed a 'hero.' Think Superman in Man of Steel, Gamera in the 90s Gamera trilogy, and Mothra in the original Mothra film. I actually liked it that way.
