I thought the point of a Godzilla film are the humans that populate it?

Not really. Out of the 28 Toho films, maybe 5 can be argued have decent character work, and by decent I mean passable by the slimmest margin. They are always plot driven and strung along with most tenuous of narrative threads.

Fine then, just keep defending a movie you haven't see. I guess I'll just skim past all your posts.

I'm simply saying, from the perspective of a Godzilla fan, I'm not looking for nuanced and subtle character work. Character work that helps move the narrative along. Anything else is a blessing.

Seeing this tomorrow at 7:00. My small town two screen theater has 3 shows. They must be using both screens, never done that before.

When you have a movie named Godzilla and you promote the monster, i expect it to be about the monster. It's much more about the Mutos. Godzilal is a plot device to have the Mutos defeated.

Ford's character wasn't interesting.

Ford is one invincible cockroach, he survives ANYTHING.

Agree about Godzilla's presence. This whole movie can be renamed MUTO: guest staring Godzilla. I was hoping for more story presence about Godzilla, but he was just there...

The biggest issue with the characters being weak is Godzilla is hardly in this film at all. The human characters are the film...so if they're weak, you have a weak film. You guys really aren't believing us when we say Godzilla is hardly in this film. I went in last night expecting the 'less is more' approach and STILL couldn't believe just how little Godzilla's in it.

EXACTLY! Everyone says the 1954 Classic had little actual screen time for Godzilla, but his presence was felt in every scene. The film was about him! The great character moments were responses to Godzilla and his impact on their society. This film simply doesn't feel like a Godzilla film. It feels like some monster film that has Godzilla in a glorified cameo. Both MUTO's have way more screen time.

Seriously, from the trailers, I've always thought those nuclear plant breakdown, something hidden by the government etc was Godzilla. It turns out to be MUTO, and Godzilla sorta popped up when Ken Watanabe mentioned him.

Not much an issue to me, but imo, for the first film of the reboot, Godzilla should have had more plot element/presence instead of MUTO. The movie sorta feel like Godzilla 2: MUTO.

For someone who REALLY didn't like Pacific Rim, do you guys think I would enjoy this?

Hard to say, not only are they such different films but what are the reasons you didn't like Pacific Rim?

Got my ticket for tomorrow night :)

It depends. Why you didn't like Pacific Rim? The cheesiness? Flat characters?

For Pacific Rim, I was expecting bad ass robots on monsters action and I got what I wanted. The movie didn't really take itself seriously too. The cheesiness and flat characters added to the charm.

For Godzilla, it took a really different approach. The movie was really serious with barely any humor, opting for a more build up (and cockblock) but the characters were sorta meh for the kind of approach it took. I would say it is serviceable, not boring. Then again, I am easily pleased.

Basically if comes down to how engaging you find all the human stuff/plot to be. And if not how much does the final brawl satisfy you to make up for the characters and story.

Got my tickets for IMAX on Fri. Probably will still see this tomorrow night.

That also isn't uncommon for Godzilla films. Even ones he is barely in, the characters are normally not all that interesting. I can only think of a handful of Godzilla films with a good plotline around the human characters.

But, I'm seeing this Friday. Then I will be able to judge it fairly. I'm only saying that, this isn't exactly a new complaint for Godzilla films, LOL!

Ok, I'm back.

So first things first I'm not a Godzilla fan, I've never seen any film outside of that 1998 atrocity, so I don't know how well this captures the spirit of the Godzilla films of the past. On first impressions this is a well made and entertaining movie that has just enough interesting characters going for it to make up for the lack of the title character throughout.

The film feels like a dressed up B-movie, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It has all the vibes of a direct to DVD type of sci-fi movie but is presented in an A-grade fashion. There's not much character development to be honest, Bryan Cranston's character has the best arc of the characters but sadly he doesn't get much screen time, the remaining characters are there to fill in obligatory roles, the hero, the girl, the scientist, the army general, etc. They aren't bad however, they are interesting enough to get you through to parts you're waiting for and are helped by some solid acting, but overall they are fairly one note people with little to do other than fill those roles.

The film's less is more approach works, even though Godzilla doesn't appear in the film for a hell of a long time the filmmakers make the most of his time on screen. Part of me feels like there should have been more of the character however I firmly believe the creative team got the balance 100% correct. Any more Godzilla fighting in cities I think would have created a very noise experience, destruction is cool, but it works better if it's not blasted in your face for 20-30 mins which is what some movies do. Here, it feels like there's just enough monster mayhem without ever overdoing it.

The one major complaint I'll make is how dark the movie looked, the third act is almost too dark to really appreciate what's going on, as such I really don't see how there could be any benefit to a 3D experience of the movie. The design of Godzilla is great, he looks awesome in the daylight though, the MUTOs aren't really a design I liked all that much but from a GC perspective they were good.

Overall I think most people will enjoy this movie, I can see why people might not like it if they're looking for lots of monster battles, but overall I wouldn't call it waste of money. It's certainly a film best watched in the cinema, it's possible the flaws of the movie might shine a bit more on DVD/Bluray, but for now it's an entertaining cinema experience.

8/10

I'm really thinking the general audience will complain about this film. Well I liked it enough! But still curious how WOM will be.
