That also isn't uncommon for Godzilla films. Even ones he is barely in, the characters are normally not all that interesting. I can only think of a handful of Godzilla films with a good plotline around the human characters.

But, I'm seeing this Friday. Then I will be able to judge it fairly. I'm only saying that, this isn't exactly a new complaint for Godzilla films, LOL!

Well maybe that's why I love the original film and don't particularly care for the other 27 hahaha. I really love the comics and, like I said, the original film, but I've never cared much for many of the other Godzilla films. I liked this one. I just thought it could have been better and that it oddly doesn't quite feel like a Godzilla film to me at least.

I can't wait to see it,but I'm a little disappointed that everyone's been saying that Godzilla is barely even in the film.

I did the unthinkable...I spoiled myself and youtube the Godzilla 2014 atomic breathe...the videos are blocked, but the vid screen grab is there....I am not impressed.

 I've ruined myself of thy movie.

Oh well, that's life :o

They'll be expecting Monster battles. They just will be. All the trailers promote a lot of action as opposed to a Cloverfield style glimpses of the character. I mean a few days ago I was going on the assumption we'd be getting 3 main pieces of action. The airport fight. Daytime scene. Final battle. But it appears that isn't the case. I know the idea of building up an entire fight not once but twice and then cutting away would really turn off some if you aren't expecting it.

If it is still an action scene with teases of a Godzilla fight. Say for example he does fight but they only show the army and very very slight bits of the fight that would satisfy me as a Godzilla action scene that doesn't really show him. Don't build up an action scene and leave. Have like a 5 minute tense action scene build up a bigger scene then cut away.

So I am gonna guess that the Asia Trailer was brutally honest then? And not our two trailers over here. Ya know, the ones where it looks....

like Godzilla is just causing destruction along with other monsters. But in Asia Trailer he is clearly an anti-hero type of thing.

It depends. Why you didn't like Pacific Rim? The cheesiness? Flat characters?

For Pacific Rim, I was expecting bad ass robots on monsters action and I got what I wanted. The movie didn't really take itself seriously too. The cheesiness and flat characters added to the charm.

For Godzilla, it took a really different approach. The movie was really serious with barely any humor, opting for a more build up (and cockblock) but the characters were sorta meh for the kind of approach it took. I would say it is serviceable, not boring. Then again, I am easily pleased.
Yeah it was the characters and cheesiness which made me dislike PR. Which is weird because usually I'm all for that! Just rubbed me the wrong way in that movie I guess.
Glad to hear that Godzilla is takin a different approach, as I figured would happen.

I liked Godzilla more overall but I'm not sure if anything in Godzilla topped the Hong Kong scene in Pacific Rim. The final fight in G might come close but I gotta see it again.

I think I've lost all hope for this movie. I will never understand how the studio ever agreed with the director about leaving the best for the end of the movie. I don't really think I want to see it anymore just so I don't feel letdown and disappointed for everyone else watching it in the theatre.

K so then don't see it.

Just watched the film. Yes he is.

I thought the [Blackout]Mothra and Gamera easter egg[/BlAckout] was kinda cute.

The first time we see Godzilla is pretty ****ing awesome...the build up was worth it IMO.

Loved how Godzilla totally doesn't mind humans lingering around him. Atomic breath had my crowd cheering. Wished the fight was longer. Totally surprised that Bryan Cranston's character dies. Aaron Taylor was pretty boring to watch. Seemed like he was phoning it in. Even though they explained Godzilla's existence in a way that makes a sequel possible, I have no idea how they're gonna make it not seem like something we've seen before.

"King of Monsters? Or savior of our city?"

Hope if they do a sequel, Godzilla has more screen time.

Weezerspider is so correct about this movie. If the story resolved around Godzilla, his limited screentime would be justified.

This movie is about the villains, Godzilla simply arises because he's a Predator.

Something I found odd is that for all the hoohaa about him being the alpha predator, [BLACKOUT]he didn't even eat the MUTOs. It felt more like he was being territorial rather than predatory.[/BLACKOUT]

I didn't even think of that lol.

There's 28 films in the Godzilla franchise sans G.I.N.O. 1998. I haven't watched them all and I'm not going to bother to. At least not for awhile, but I'll pick my top 10 films:

Godzilla - The original film where he was a creature to be feared by all as he was the living embodiment of America's use of nuclear weapons during World War II. It was political message, but people loved seeing a giant monster destroy stuff (the dinosaur version of The Hulk) and he's been a cult icon ever since. Watch the Japanese version. Its better than the American version and has a lot more footage. Godzilla dies at the end of this film so every movie you see him in after this is actually a second Godzilla.

King Kong Vs. Godzilla - Following the footsteps of Frankenstein Vs. The Wolf Man, two monsters would fight each other here. King Kong has now grown to the size of a skyscraper for some reason takes on the large lizard in this battle of epic porportions. There was a decades old rumor that Godzilla wins in the Japanese version of the film. That is false.

Godzilla Vs. Mothra - Mothra, who would become a staple character in the series, makes her debut here to protect her egg from Godzilla, who was still a bully at this time.

Ghidorah - He is a three headed dragon from Venus who arrives on Earth to destroy all life and Godzilla's top villain. He is so strong that it takes the team of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan (a giant pterodactyl and Godzilla's buddy) to defeat him. This was the film that turned Godzilla from a bad guy into a good guy.

Destroy All Monsters - This was basically a battle royal with Godzilla fighting all his past enemies because of evil aliens from Planet X that want to take over the Earth (a plot that would be re-used in the sequels time and time again) all in one film where at the end, he establishes himself as The King Of Monsters.

Godzilla's Revenge - A little boy is being picked on by bullies and imagines himself going to Monster Island where he befriends Manilla, Godzilla's son. (Yes, Godzilla has a kid! He laid an egg and hatched in a few films prior to this one.) Godzilla teaches Manilla how to get stronger and using his powers in order to fight off other monsters. This encourages the boy to have courage in the real world and fight the kids picking on him as well as two bank robbers. A lot of fans hated this film because it was campy, but I liked the fact it didn't take itself seriously. After so many serious films that included death and destruction, it was a nice change of pace.

Godzilla Vs. Megalon - A giant cockroach that can spit bombs of his mouth and drills underground is sent by people living underwater to destroy the world, but becomes engaged in battle with Jet Jaguar (Ultraman, another popular Japanese superhero, knockoff who can change his size like Ant-Man). The battle is back and forth until Gigan, a foe of Godzilla from the previous movie, arrives and the two evil monsters jump the robot until Godzilla comes to his rescue and thus you have yourselves...a tag team match!

Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla - This film introduces one of his greatest enemies, a robotic version of himself created by mankind to destroy him. They would battle each other in many films to follow after this.

Godzilla 1985 - It basically a remake of the original film, but works well in its own right. Because of legalities, it has yet to be released on DVD or Blu-Ray, but if you can watch it on VHS, its totally worth it.

Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah - He fights a mutated crab lizard who gets stronger throughout the film. It turns out Godzilla is dying in this as his body cannot handle radioactive powers. Very sad to watch his demise and his son, Manilla, takes his place at the end.

Honorable mentions:

Godzilla Vs. Hedorah - He's basically Captain Planet in this as he has to fight an evil blob creature that feeds off the world's smog pollution.

Godzilla 2000 - Scientists find out that Manilla (or technically Godzilla III now) has the ability to heal any damage done to his skin (ala Wolverine). He fights an giant evil alien in the shape of a UFO who wants to steal his DNA.

King Kong vs. Godzilla is my favorite, it always makes me laugh so hard.

Wow. I was so disappointed by this.

First of all Aaron Taylor-Johnson ruined the film for me. His performance was just abysmal. Every time he was in a back-and-forth with Cranston or Olsen it just became even more apparent.

Yes, the 'less is more' approach is very effective if done right (ie Alien), but just not so here. Gareth Edwards needed to pepper in throughout the entire film more of what we wanted to see: Godzilla in action. There just isn't enough. But Godzilla's scenes are far and away the best thing the film has going.

Godzilla scenes: 10/10. Rest of the film 2/10. It balances out somewhere middling. The RT score is way inflated.

God I hope this Aaron Taylor-Johnson kid doesn't ruin A:AoU now.

Not a troll review, a valid criticism although I don't think I agree entirely. Taylor-Johnson isn't awful but he doesn't really bring much to the role. He is wooden compared to both Cranston and Olsen. Also I don't know what it was but I felt something was off with Watanabe, either he was being overly dramatic in his scenes or he got screwed with the lamest dialog in the movie. David Strathairn brought a real sense of gravitas to the movie I felt however.

Yeah I just saw it, little dissapointed. All the godzilla scenes were amazing but all the human elements died with Bryan Cranston. Probably a 5/10, not too bad but not too great either

With the mixed opinion i'm seeing on the internet, i think that even if the film ends up with a very positive rating on Rotten tomatoes and with critics, most of the common consensus on the internet will say the film was awful, like what happened with last King Kong film.

Yeah, maybe I came down too harsh. It's not awful. But it's not great either (except when Godzilla is onscreen, which shockingly isn't alot).

I actually think there's a possibility of that happening. I think people going in expecting huge monster fights are going to be very disappointed. Overall I can see why critics are in favour of the movie because technically there's nothing inherently wrong with the film, it's got enough character moments and build up to keep you going until the monsters arrive and the battles themselves don't overstay their welcome. That said, in an age where an Avengers or MoS battle lasts some 30-40 mins I don't think people are going to appreciate the less is more approach.

There was nothing trully bad about King Kong either, yet i see many saying how awful and boring it was. I think it's a shame really, seems like many no longer have much patience when they watch movies about these high concepts.
