I'm sorry but Cloverfield craps all over this movie.
I haven't seen Godzilla yet so I couldn't say but I did love Cloverfield aside from that. Haven't ever rewatched it though.

Anyone else totally in love with Godzilla's roar plus the ensuing noise afterwards that was at the end of every trailer? My favorite film sound effect in a long time.

Oh yeah, the film has a whole may not have worked for me but Godzilla himself was epic, everything about him. His look, roar, movement and just everything about him was what I hoped it would be.

He was just acting on a different level to everyone else in the movie for me.

I'm calling bull**** - Gareth Edwards said himself (in several interviews) that he hates after credits scenes... so why would there be one if he's so against them? I won't believe it until I actually see the real scene myself. I'm not saying you're making it up, but this sounds like B.S. to me. I checked online and the rumors are saying the same thing. (In China, apparently.)

No offense to you, of course. :cwink:

I can confirm that there is NO POST-CREDIT SCENE for Godzilla. As an usher, I had to tell people that several times yesterday and Friday. Some people get disappointed when they sit there through the end credit scroll, and boom... nada.

I think its fun that people are treating Godzilla like a superhero film.

I think he could most definitely be one of the greats. A superhero by any other name.

That's mularkey. You can't possibly understand why we think this film is so bad while at the same time you convince yourself its so good.

I have to remind myself that I'm not a natural-born geek. There are a lot of comic enthusiast that are going to rave endlessly because that's their job as a fan.

I guess you missed the part where I said "I understand why people don't like the film"?

And then I said it "won me over". Never said I convinced myself it was "so good". It won me over in the end.

My one word review would be awesome. I just loved it. Loved the mood and atmosphere. Loved the tension. Loved the buildup and found the teases to be very imaginative. I loved seeing the monsters from the perspective of the humans through most of it until the mega awesome third act where Big G just took over. And most of all i loved Big G in this. He really feels like a tired yet powerful legendary warrior coming out of retirement to put fools in check, and i loved that so much. I can't wait until the sequel!

So I quite enjoyed this film. I liked the tension and the build-up of the first act, and the fact that the whole movie wasn't just monsters punching each other (as awesome as that is). It was fairly irritating that whenever there was a destruction scene or fight coming up, we'd cut away and move to a different scene, however the last ten/fifteen minutes completely made up for that.

The biggest issue was the characters. They were awful. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was so forgettable, bland and just plain bad. If I asked you to describe the character of Ford Brody in a few words, what would you say?

Exactly.

Same goes for his wife, whatever her name was. Bryan Cranston was easily the standout (which isn't a huge compliment, but he was very good for the short amount of time he was in the film) as his character actually had depth and some motivation. IMO, Joe Brody should have been the lead character rather than his son. It was marketed that way...

Overall I'd give it a 6.5/10. If the script had been better then I think this would have been incredible. Whatever happened to Frank Darabont writing?

7/10 for me. I had lowered expectations. I can see where people would have wanted more scenes of monsters fighting but I was comfortable with what was presented. It can get repetitive and boring if it's too much of the same. Also, it did take place in a major city, so you can't level everything and still expect people to survive.

ATJ was fine. The role was kind of bland and he did what he could with it. I would have kept Cranston in it longer, but he served his purpose.

I must say this.........when Godzilla's tail starts lighting up in blue, and it travels up his spinal fins, and you know what's going to happen next, my inner Daniel Bryan was screaming YES!! YES!! YES!!!

and then when he used it the final time.............:wow:!!!

Yep!!! :woot:

Anita Busch at Deadline says that WB and Legendary are already developing a follow-up to this pic.

Not surprised.

:highfive:

Yeah, with the reported budget and the opening weekend, they would definitely want a sequel. Though WB is still in the picture apparently. Not too surprising that they would still have the options for being involved in the sequels. Just lessons the chances of the King Kong rematch, which is something I've heard Toho has wanted to do in the past.

Yeah, Edwards got that the atomic breath perfectly. From the initial blow glow in the mist (which just was an instant smile once I saw that) to the charge up the tail and spines, to even how the spines light up.

I would love a reboot of Godzilla vs. King Kong

Saw it again last night. Still enjoy it, just those pesky cutaways ya know? Well it is what it is. Looking forward to that sequel. More Wantanebe and Hawkins plz.

One thing I forgot to mention was that Alexandre Desplat's score is really really good. I thought it would be dark and moody going in, but after the opening title sequence had rolled I realised that it was more bombastic and reminded me of classic 80's Hollywood. Still got it stuck in my head.

Must be a local ....errr I mean hyperbole thing. My audience was dead silent throughout the entire film.
All audiences are different. The first time I saw it, everyone was pretty silent aside from an enthusiastic reaction to Godzilla's first roar, and the 2nd time, there was cheering/clapping in several portions of the film. Same exact theater both viewings.

I honestly can't remember the last time I've disagreed so harshly with people about a film.

It literally feels like people saw something entirely different. People are describing the film as dull or plotting with nothing happening which makes no sense as the film LITERALLY moves from intense set piece to set piece. The first act is the only act that's "slow" in the film. And really, there is only one true "tease" in the film.

This is an honest to goodness old school monster film that relishes mood, atmosphere, suspense and tension over blowing something up every 10 minutes. The more people yell about what they want from films, the more I think they have no clue what they want.

Godzilla is being judged not only on its own merit but also against the prevailing cinematic environment. Movies these days are fast-paced stimulation orgies where there is little time for build-up or anything not related to sensory overload.

Godzilla had a slower pace, but I think it's over-emphasized because of how fast paced movies in general are, especially when people's expectations coming in are "massive monsters+instant action".

Cloverfield was terribad... 15 min into the shaky cam style and I wanted to punch a baby in the face.

I must say I also loved the music/score. it had a very "old school" monster movie feel to it!!

What I did like about Cloverfield, and granted, it was probably ripped off from Final Fantasy X, was the monster having parasites on it. Gave the humans something they could actually fight.

I kinda got weirded out when I realized that the husband and wife will play brother and sister next year. :funny:

Well, prepare to have your mindblown then because in the Darabont version (I believe?), the husband and wife were ALSO supposed to be step-brother and sister in this movie. :funny:

Haha, I liked all the build up. Just hated the eventual reveal of the monster. Enjoyed the film at the time of watching but not been tempted to rewatch or buy it.

Gotta admit the second I saw the first fin light up I was getting extremely giddy :D

And the last time he used it I was actually expecting him to [BLACKOUT]rip the MUTO's jaw off ala King Kong did to the T-Rex. Did NOT expect him to fire straight down the MUTO's throat [/BLACKOUT] :hubba

My experience in the theaters with Cloverfield is still fresh in my memory, we see the final scene on the Ferris Wheel then credits followed by AT LEAST 10 people screaming "THAT'S IT!?!?!?"
