James Rolfe aka the Angry Video Game Nerd, and a huge Godzilla fan, just saw this movie. His review was like this: he liked it and thought it was pretty good, and is happy that Godzilla is back, and says it's an American Godzilla that got it right, but personally he sees it as not a traditional Godzilla movie (aka rubber suit and from Japan) in his head,as well as feeling it's 16 years too late given the hyped now versus then with the '98 movie and American's POV of Godzilla.
However, he felt that the teasing was too much; it worked the first time at the airport, giving the fight a distant POV, but then they should've moved on from that idea with later appearances before the final fight. He didn't like the MUTOS because they were the Cloverfield monster again, and that Americans aren't creative with monster designs like Japan is (ex: Gigan, Biollante, Legion (from Gamera 3)), and didn't like that there was more MUTOS and less Godzilla in a Godzilla movie. Finally, he wants future films to experiment pass the grounded reality setting, and make the films unique in its universe (ex: time travel, or crazy fights and aliens (i.e. Final Wars)).
But in the end, he's happy, he likes it, and is ready and wants to see more Godzilla films. You can see the review here:
