Godzilla (2014) - Part 9

I liked that emmerich's zilla was able to run.

But really what I'll miss will be that "animal" character.

Other than that I sort of like that Movies have been obsessed with realism the past couple of years.

Wow, I have been trying to keep my hype levels for this movie down because the last two big movies to which I was really looking forward I found incredibly disappointing, the trailers having made the films look much better than they actually were.

So while the trailers for this have been awesome, I didn't allow them to get me too excited since they are just trailers and you can just cut a bunch of good bit together out of what is otherwise a mediocre film.

But this WonderCon footage just wow. As everyone else had probably already said, Edwards just displays such incredible skill for putting a sequence together, teasing the audience, and building tension and suspense. To me, that is a much better hint at the film's actual quality than a trailer. If the rest of the film is this well-crafted, oh man...

By the way, I just I love the aircraft carrier sequence with Watanabe despite the unfinished CGI. It is an excellent homage to this:

I will be curious to see how this movie does/is received in Japan. The Japanese HATED the 1998 film (even more so than western fans), so it'll be interesting to see how they feel about this one.

It's already been reported that Toho has seen it and loved it, I have a good feeling that Japanese fans will enjoy it.

Toho emailed Gareth and said they absolutely loved it so I have a feeling Japanese audiences will be very pleased with this movie.

But the first half kinda left me worried. The dog reminded me of the dog scene in Emmerich's Independence Day....

Just watched the leaked WonderCon footage. It looks AMAZING. The whole set-up is great, and hearing the audience cheer at the full reveal of Godzilla at the end was great.

Other general commentary (I'm getting it all in now since I haven't posted in this thread in a long while):

-New monster(s). The new one looks cool enough, obviously a new creature though some subtle, appreciated visual references to old kaiju. As much as I'd love to see takes on more of the classic monsters, if the new kaiju/"MUTOs" are cool and well-designed, I'll be happy.

-Sorry if this has been discussed before, but since Ken Watanabe's character is a Dr. Serizawa, think some variation on the Oxygen Destroyer will come into play?

Doubtful. He's playing a Dr. Serizawa, but not THE Dr. Serizawa.

A small part of this film IS taking place in 1954. I'm fairly sure Watanabe's Serizawa is a descendent of THE Serizawa.

While part of the film takes place in 1954, I haven't seen any indication that any of the events of the original film are supposed to happen. He probably just is Serizawa.
