Skull Island is a new movie not connected to 05 King Kong. Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla 2 are set in the same universe as Skull Island leading up to King Kong vs Godzilla.

I don't think there is any relation to the 2005 King Kong. Godzilla 2014, upcoming Kong: Skull Island and this are in the same continuity. They are rebooting Kong.

Since Godzilla's height has already been established in the new film, Kong will have to be bigger. Kong's height had already been increased in the past for when he fought Godzilla. Although last time Kong was grown to 45m to Godzilla's 50m. Godzilla was 108m in the new film.

Was Gareth Edwards ever in the running for Godzilla vs Kong? I know he's set for Godzilla 2 and Tull had said earlier that he wanted Edwards to do a full trilogy, but that was before the Kong crossover plans were announced.

Legendary has hired a writers' room to break the story for Godzilla vs. Kong. Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) is heading the group, which will hatch out the best ideas and story beats for the film. Then a writer will be chosen to write the actual script.

Well sort of... there is Armored Mothra that fought Grand King Ghidorah in Mothra 3: Attack of King Ghidorah aka Rebirth of Mothra III.
