The movie opens with Kong waking up in SKULL ISLAND. He bathes in a waterfall. Seems happy. Throws a tree in the sky and it hits an invisible wall. We then see that Kong is in a giant dome of sorts on Skull Island being watched by Monarch.
Bernie Hayes(Brian Tyree Henry) is a conspiracy podcaster( and former APEX employee?)and is sneaking into an APEX base in Florida to try and get footage of some shady ****. Godzilla attacks. During the attack, Bernie discovers a giant metal piece in the APEX base( I thought it was part of MechaGodzilla, but my friend who watched it with me and many of you on the forums here have made me realize it was probably the Orca).
Maddison sees all the news about Godzilla attacking and is worried. She talks to her dad on the phone who is worried because Monarch doesn’t know why Godzilla attacked.
Nathan Lind(Alexander Skarsgard) is a jaded scientist who has written a book on Hollow Earth. He’s jaded because his brother died in Antarctica several years earlier on the only attempted human expedition to Hollow Earth. Walter Simmons(Demian Bichir) and Ren Serizawa( Shun Oguri) arrive at Nathan’s office. Walter Simmons tells Nathan that they believe they can find something in Hollow Earth to stop Godzilla. Simmons reminds Nathan that based on his book, it is believed that Kong may be able to find Hollow Earth based on a sort of natural instinct. They need to take Kong to Antarctica and follow him through the caves and down under the Earth’s surface. Walter tells Nathan he will bank roll the mission.
Maddison listens to Bernie’s podcast and believes he can help her find out what’s the story behind Godzilla attacking. She enlists her friend Josh(Julian Dennison) to help her find Bernie.
Nathan goes to Skull Island and meets with Illene Andrews(Rebecca Hall) who he already knows and Jia(Kaylee Hottle) a Skull Island native who appears to be the last of her kind. Nathan and Illene fight about using Kong, but Nathan convinces her because he says it may be Kong’s only way to find others like him.
Maddison and Josh find Bernie. He’s at first suspicious of them, but they earn his trust. Josh asks why Bernie has a gun because he has a holster on his chest. Bernie says its not a gun and pulls out a flask from the holster. He says he had the flask when his wife died and he won’t finish drinking it until “it’s all over”(or something like that).
Nathan, Illene and their team board an aircraft carrier with Kong. Maya Simmons(Eiza Gonzalez), Walter’s daughter, joins them to “look after everything for her father”. On the aircraft Nathan discovers that Jia and Kong can communicate with a sign language thats native of Skull Island. Godzilla attacks the carrier and he and Kong fight. Kong is beat, but Godzilla is coming back to finish the job when the military shuts all the weapons and ships off to “Play dead”. It works and Godzilla leaves. Realizing that Godzilla will continue to come for Kong if he’s deemed a threat to him again since they are both predators, Nathan and Ilene change their plan.
Bernie leads Maddison and Josh through the Apex base in Florida to show them the big metal thing(probably Orca as everyone has corrected me), but when they arrive, it is gone.
Nathan, Illene and their team carry Kong to Antarctica in a net carried by helicopters. They get to Antarctica and convince Kong to go in the caverns potentially leading to Hollow Earth by telling him that he has family there. Kong and the team go into the caverns and travel deep below the surface.
Meanwhile, Bernie, Maddison and Josh find SkullCrawler eggs at the Apex base’s basement deep beneath the ground.. They look at them when, all of a sudden, the platform they are on starts moving and Bernie, Maddison, Josh and the Eggs are sucked into an underground tunnel that connects Florida to Hong Kong.
Kong leads his team to Hollow Earth. There they find an atmosphere that resembles Skull Island. Suddenly, a ship is attacked by Bat-like-snakes. Kong defeats them and they continue to travel through Hollow Earth. Kong finds a big cave-like area that has a handprint like his on the wall. He follows it and enters into a rocky throne room. He sits on the throne as Blue Lava like substance creeps through the rocks(The Blue lava stuff looks like Godzilla’s back when it lights up and he shoots Atomic Breath).
Bernie, Maddison and Josh finally stop at a hanger like base in Hong Kong where they find MechaGodzilla. Terrified, they begin to run when one of the SkullCrawlers hatches. MechaGodzlla disposes of it with ease, but then shuts off.
Ren sits in Ghidorah’s Skull, which now has tubes and wires coming out of it as he pilots MechaGodzilla. He gets out and talks with Walter. Walter says when they get the power from Hollow Earth, they will be able to power MechaGodzilla properly and he wont shut down.
Meanwhile, Kong finds the Axe in the ground amongst the rocks, where it appears like the Blue Lava Substance is flowing towards it. Maya Simmons and her Apex team begin to extract some of the Blue Lava Substance and Upload it to MechaGodzilla.
Godzilla attacks Hong Kong. He stops and BLASTS through the ground, all the way to Hollow Earth.
Kong’s throne room begins to collapse as Godzilla blasts which causes DIFFERENT Bat-like creatures to attack. Kong fights them off the main characters, while they kill Maya and some other humans. Kong, Nathan, Illene and Jia use the hole from Godzilla’s blast to go to Hong Kong.
Godzilla and Kong fight in Hong Kong. Kong eventually gets a strong blow on Godzilla, leading Nathan to say “I guess Round 2 goes to Kong”.
Bernie, Maddison and Josh find the Ghidorah head and Bernie realizes that they are using Ghidorah’s Telekentic DNA to pilot the MechaGodzilla from there. They continue to snoop around, but are caught.
Godzilla and Kong continue to fight.
The Upload is complete for MechaGodzilla. Ren warns that they don’t know the capability of the new Hollow Earth technology, but Walter ignores him and orders him to get in. Walter villain monologues in the control room to Bernie, Maddison and Josh as the MechaGodzilla goes haywire and Ren is Shocked to death in the Ghidorah Skull. MechaGodzilla awakes with a mind of it’s own and kills Walter.
Godzilla gets on all fours and finally finishes Kong.
MechaGodzilla attacks the city. Godzilla fights him.
Jia tells Illene and Nathan that Kong is dying. She feels his heartbeat slowing.
Bernie tells Josh and Maddison they have to try and help. Josh tries to hack into the computer.
Godzilla continues to get his ass beat by MechaGodzilla.
Nathan and Illene Mcgyvor a defibrillator out of their ship and blow it up on Kong’s chest. It works. Kong wakes up. He joins the fight.
Godzilla and Kong team up against MechaGodzilla. However, MechaGodzilla defeats Godzilla. He grabs Kong and seems to be about to finish him.
Bernie pulls out his flask and goes “I guess this is it” and Josh goes “that’s it!” and grabs the flask and pours it down the fan of the computer.
MechaGodzilla stops for a second. Godzilla looks up at Kong and Fires his breath at the Axe, igniting it. Kong attacks MechaGodzilla and cuts him up, killing him.
Bernie, Madison and Josh unite with Madison’s dad.
Godzilla gets up. He and Kong look at each other. Kong drops his hammer. Godzilla roars. Godzilla goes into the ocean peacefully.
Illene and Jia watch Kong in Skull Island. Kong stands on a cliff and looks off at the sun.
