I enjoyed this, even though it was dumb AF. Like all kaiju movies, I think you just have to kinda turn your brain off and enjoy the carnage. Like the opening scene when Godzilla decimates that Apex facility and it says that only EIGHT people were killed, lol.
The hollow earth stuff was a surprise; I enjoyed that aspect of it simply because I grew up reading Jules Verne novels and it gave the human characters something interesting to do besides run away from the monsters. I wasn’t expecting for that aspect of it to turn into a full scale fantasy epic though, with Kong finding a hidden temple and a magic ax. Maybe I missed a scene where he also picked up an Elder Scroll down there.
I don’t really mind the character assassination of Godzilla here; previous movies almost tried to gloss over the destruction that he, himself causes while focusing on the deaths that other monsters cause. But I don’t see how anyone, after this movie, would look at Big G as a savior again.
The human characters were fine, I guess... Eleven, Paperboy and Deadpool 2 Kid didn’t really have any impact on the overall plot but I mostly enjoyed their adventure. I also mostly liked Skarsgard, Hall and the little girl, though they all could have done a bit more. Coach Taylor must have only come back because he was contractually obligated too. Gonzalez, Reddick and Bichir were totally wasted.
As for the whole third act... introducing that character was stupid but I guess if you’re going to do it, that was the most... realistic way? LOL. If you try and rationalize the dumb **** that happens in this movie it will probably make your head explode. Just sit back and enjoy it, I guess.
One last thing, for all you “Snyder Cut” review bombers out there. This movie was nonsensical and moronic. But it’s still better written, better looking, better acted and better directed than your four-hour mess.
