Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Not necessarily true. The battle was briefly discussed by the 2 companies a few times, but ultimately never did for various reasons. In this case, these are films made by Legendary. Not directly produced by Toho. So they may be more willing to allow it if Legendary wanted to get the Gamera rights. I think it happening in this franchise is more likely than a direct Japanese collaboration would be.

Do not underestimate the amount of control Toho still has. Kong is something they have wanted for a long time. And even now, it is still a nightmare of licenses. As it is, continuing the Godzilla half is going to depend a LOT on renegotiations and how well this movie does.

I mean, they’ve all been pretty successful in Japan so I wouldn’t have too much fear on that front.

Though...I wonder if this doesn’t open the door for Toho King Kong movies. They’ve wanted to use the character for decades now and they’re in a position where they could probably negotiate something with WB/Legendary.

I mean sure, but we will see how receptive the audience after Eva's run at the box office.

I always wondered about how all the rights and licensing works for these films. Even more so after Universal distributed Peter Jackson's King Kong and the last set of films were WB.

Eva’s been out since early March, and GvK doesn’t hit until May so I think there’s more than enough breathing room. Plus, both films are being distributed by Toho, so even if we have a situation where it’s both films sitting at the 1 and 2 spots in the Box Office that’s not a loss for them. If anything it’s an embarrassment of riches.

Yeah this doesn’t feel like a “conclusive” story. More like an introduction of Kong into the modern day Godzilla mythos.

I think the big decision is going to be about Godzilla. I think Legendary is going to be confident enough to continue the Kong side. Probably will want to try to leap frog off this movie to revitalize Godzilla, but again, we have to worry about Toho.

Man, it's a real shame Bear McCreary wasn't asked to come back and score this movie. That's like the best thing about KOTM. Some of the Kong material is nice, albit repetitive like most of the score, but the rest of Holkenborg's stuff is just so boring and bland.

Also, I found the overall sound mixing of this film to be weak. Even in theaters I never thought anything had a real punch and effect to it. Especially the two monsters' yells at one another.

I watched this on my Macbook with Airpods, and it sounded pretty decent in terms of mix, but yeah I wasn't all that impressed with Junkie XL's music.

That's another reason I really liked King of the Monsters. That music was sick.

Yeah, I don't think anything can beat what McCreary did with Godzilla's theme.



I do need to watch the movie again, but I'm pretty sure nothing hit like this in the soundtrack.

I just wish McCreary had did work on a Monster Zero March.

I had a blast. Saw it in Dolby and it was honestly such a fun experience. I don't know why a lot of people seem to complain about the human characters, I thought they were all pretty good and it's a monster movie. I'm here to see monsters and they delivered.

Not crazy about either Godzilla (2014) or KOTM but thoroughly enjoyed this and Skull Island.

This movie was AWESOME. Most fun I've had since Endgame. I had a blast. This is definitely my favorite out of these four movies. It delivers on what you'd want. Two giant monsters beating the **** out of eachother. Very creative and imaginative under Wingard in how it embraces the sheer insanity of the concept by going full on sci fi. Loved the use of neon. It seems to be Wingard's stylistic signature and it works for him that's not just a gimmick. This movie felt like if Blade Runner and Heavy Metal had a baby.

As for the humans, they were all solid but still likable and properly serviced getting the two monsters to fight and boy did that not disappoint.

Kong blocking Godzilla's nuclear blast with his axe will forever be burned into my brain

. It's a shame the contract is up because now I'd like to see more movies. Wingard was exactly the kick in the pants the franchise needed after KOTM which was just bland.

This has made me curious about Wingard's Thundercats movie now. The guy is talented and knows how to have fun and be creative and keep his personal touch in a big budget movie like this.

Looking forward to going back to watch this on HBOMax.

the hoomans were both over focused upon and undercooked. If you were gonna make them caricatures, then do that. If you were gonna give them depth, then go for it. This movie had the worst of both worlds.

I've had two days to think about this and while the action in this movie definitely delivered and I would love to see Wingard return at some point just as much as Vogt-Roberts I do hope he comes up with a better script next time, because the writing for this movie is easily the worst thing about it IMO.

I just hated the human villian stuff in this and since I just recently rewatched KOTM I honestly think its handled even worse than it was in that movie. I'm not going to get too heavily into spoilers, but they introduce so many more interesting ideas in this as far as world building goes and Wingard had a chance to pretty much go in any direction he wanted which makes it even more frustrating and disappointing to me.

Of course we are all coming into this to see the monster fights, but they tried to have it both ways and it shows when you think about just how much set up went into introducing Mechagodzilla who I wish was just scrapped from this movie entirely since they did such a crappy job building it up anyways.

Atleast in KOTM I never felt that Charles Dance and his people took away from the real threat of the movie which was King Ghidorah and Rodan which is why I find that movie alot more satisfying overall than GvK not to mention just how much more superior that beautifully done Bear McCreary score still is in comparison to how unremarkable and forgettable the Junkie XL score was for this.

The action felt very ordinary to me. Because the camera was largely from the creature’s perspective. Bringing them down to our level. At some point it was just man/lizard UFC.

it doesn’t have the weight and awe of pacific rim, which was largely shot from the vantage of mortals.I can’t help but compare the Hong Kong fight of both films and how del toro’s version is so much better.

It being alot cleaner and less murky than the previous movies is why I can understand the praise its getting, because even if it might feel ordinary to some its definitely easier on the senses and more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

I personally never had a problem with the action we got KOTM though and kind of miss the amount of atmoesphere and dread those monster battles had in that movie.

I thought the rain and snow added so much more weight to those scenes, especially when it got to the climax, but I do think that the Kaiju action in GvK is much better directed overall.

I disagree, I think the monster action in this was way better than PR.
Both films suffer from the human characters imo, but GvK wins in the monster fight dept.
On monster action, I'd rate PR 1 a 7,
PR 2 a 6,
GvK a 8.
