Comics Good times with Spidey

cover.pl

Dammit, I love the Shocker. What a truly underused villain, and such a BASTARD. I miss books like this.

I actually have that one in my possession, though I don't own it. Yet. Need some extra bucks to buy it from th' girl I'm sellin' it fer.

I love the first Sinister Six story. It's the first time Ock mentally calls his tentacles to him when they're removed from his body. And Aunt May doesn't even realize she's been kidnapped with Betty, because she finds Ock so charming lol :D

I love the complete lack of fear in May, "such a charming man..." :D. I was surprised when they did leave his body, since I honestly didn't know they could. Definately learned something new on that one. I got a smile for a bit of the third-person speech, but it definately would help anyone who didn't know what was going on to just jump in and read. Best part for me was they didn't even get seperate cells, so they were left to bicker at one another.

I remember that Electro one.Doesn't Peter go to a launderette with a paper bag over his head because he has to wash his only costume?? That issue was the 2nd time Electro appeard in ASM since his 1st appearance back in ASM#9 [not counting the ASM Annual].A pity Stan didn't use him more.

He certainly did, and got a crowd of people starring at him, while he's just casually sitting there waiting. I liked the slightly snide comment about Harry's "fuman chu", and how it mustn't have gone over well with MJ, as he was shaving it.

Another fun MJ and Gwen moment:
Flash: Hi, Gwendy, couldn't get a date tonight, huh?
Gwen: Come off it, soldier. With Peter on my arm, I feel like a sweep-stakes winner.
MJ: Mmmm...if you're all that groovy, maybe you deserve Mary Jane.
Gwen: When would you like him, dear? Before or after I pull your hair out?

Plus, Electro's rather creative defeat (making his hands and feet touch while he was using is volts and short-circuiting himself out) was very refreshing than just using water. Definately one of my favorite top 10 issues. I wish that Stan would've used Electro more frequently too, but I'm definately happy for the times when he did. :)

Has anyone here read Adam Troy Castro's trilogy of novels about the Sinister Six?? Now they were fantastic.I wish Marvel would adapt them into a comic mini, with Castro writing and Bagley on the art.

Are these the novels that deal with Peter's "sister?"
If not, which ones are?
I wanted to read those.

Hey, anybody remember the time when Peter woke up one day and it turned out that everythin' from Spider-Man #98 was all an elaborate dream brought on by bad pizza? Man, those were some good times...

yeah but thats been waaaaay overdone. u could do that in those days, but now everyone would complain. which is ironic because it WOULD be original as noone would dare do it now thinking that it was too cliched. get me?

Ambushing readers with an overdone plot device because they wouldn't expect such an obvious move?

BRILLIANT!

You know, as old as that bit is, I would take it in a HEARTBEAT if it meant erasing alot of the bullcrap we've suffered through.

Yes those are the ones. They are:

1. Gathering of the Sinister Six
2. Revenge of the Sinister Six
3. Secret of the Sinister Six.

Read them. Read them A.S.A.P. They are awesome reads.

"sister"??? explain :)

Spoiler ahead:

Peter finds several pics of his parents with a baby girl while his mum was pregnant on him. I won't reveal what happens, but it's really cool.

Doc Ock - thank you.
I was gonna quote you, but then I remembered that it would defaet the purpose of the spoiler tags.

I only knew of 2 books, when did the third come out?
Also, when does the story take place? I know they try to keep the novels in continuity.

The third came out in March 2002:

As far as continuity goes, it's some time in the continuity around 2000-2002. There's alot of references and mentionings of previous infamous Spidey events and characters.

I cant remember, and i can no longer look at my collection.
What was going on in Spidey in 2002?

I actually have those books. The story was pretty good I thought. I enjoyed it very much. I remember reading a lot of those spidey novels. The Venom Factor, The Lizard Sanction and Goblin's Revenge were also good reads.

I just finished the Venom Factor... It was ok... Certainly not the page turner that Castro's books were.

I'm really liking the Spider-Man novels though. I'm working my way through all of them. Have found a few at the local HalfPrice bookstores... $3 for a hardcover with NO shipping! Now THAT's sweet.

I'll ditto that!!!

Be prepared to spend some money to get the first book. It's out of print and is popular. I read somewhere that there is a legal issue with reprinting the book. I totally lucked out and got it on Ebay for $15, but see it listed from $30 to $150.

BTW - The Gathering was one of my favorites because of the involvement of MJ. Castro writes thier relationship very well.

I've been meaning to really pick those up. Any other reccomendations as far as Spidey novels are concerned???
Check out the "Wanted: A good Spidey read" thread. I just bumped it.

It gave me some great advice on alternative reading. I've had fun stuff to read even though the comics have been disappointing. :)

Hey Captivated, I read Castro's John Doe story in the Untold Tales of Spider-Man book.

And all I can say is.........WOW!! Castro is a magician. He can even make Kraven the Hunter creepy. The whole "The Hunter is coming for me" added a real edge to the story, because you knew he was going to come. He was like the boogeyman or something, and the female Doctor Peter thought looked like Gwen was almost like a mother trying to calm down a child who thinks there's a monster in his closet or something.

My only regret is that the story wasn't longer. I didn't want it to end.

:up::up: So glad you liked it!

I know... it WAS too short. The first time through, I read it fast. So exciting. Then I read it again slower, and caught some details I had missed. The next day I read it out loud to my boyfriend while we were traveling... I'll wait awhile and probably read it again... :)

Whew, thank God I'm not alone in loving PP:SM 75.

And then there is this arc. This is to Electro what KLH was to Kraven:
cover.pl

KLH showed Kraven as the psychotically determined man that would prove himself superior to Spidey at any cost. The "power up" of Electro meant that he could show the world how powerful he was. When he was defeated by Spidey, he couldnt handle it. Some might consider suicide the sign of a weakling, but Max's attempt was also a way of spitting in his enemies face.

This arc gets bashed a lot, but it is my favorite arc featuring my favorite forgotten character:
cover.pl

Is that when Electro got that new costume?

I just read Amazing Spider-Man #129. I thought that was pretty good. Also I liked much of JMS' run up to 500 or so.
