^So.......has Ultimate gone past the point of no return then?

(especially with Bags leaving???)

Back to the main topic tho....
As per Real World Spidey...."if" they keep MJ alive....but give her an "amnesia wipe-out", thus ruining and ending the marriage...that would still result in a "Storyline" that would ultimately end up being retconned and wasting our time (taking us no where progression-wise), since it'd no doubt eventually lead back to them being together again with their "memories and minds intact" or what-have you. It'd be another cheap (unimaginative) storyline gimmick.

Just bring in a good WRITER that can handle real world topics now and no more big events that take us in circles please! Spidey can be fixxed for sure.

JQ needs to realize that there is no way to take Spidey back now and make Pete look like "YOUNG TEENAGE KID". You'd have to take away his clothing style, his friends, his job..,...heck, everything....not just his marriage.

I think Quesada is trying to recapture the magic Spidey had during his youth. Those were good times. The old school Spidey comics still hold up well today. Unfortunately, sometimes you just can't "put the genie back in the bottle" once it's out.

When One More Day is over , the sales probably won't see a significant sales increase. Making Spidey single isn't going to bring a 50% in readership or an influx of 10 -14 year olds that Marvel wants to cater to. If a movie series that has brought in well over 1 billion dollars hasn't helped comic sales, making Peter single won't even register on the national scene. At the same time, if the story isn't well received by the people who are still reading the book, then Marvel runs the risk of actually driving off readers, something they can't afford to do in today's lackluster market.

Joe Q is playing a risky game... Heck... He MIGHT pull it off, would piss off a lot of people, but the Joe been kind of lucky (Unfortunatley)... Hopefully his luck will run out before raping Spider-man beyond salvation...

And people wonder why Ultimate is considered the best Spidey book. While Bendis sometimes annoys me, at least he have creative freedom.

One good thing about Marvel deciding to flush true continuity down the crapper over the last ten years is that IF Spidey gets good again we can just ignore everything that sucked. Right?

Just like Batman fans ignoring all the goofy adventures of the '50s and early '60s?

If what my reliable source tells me, you've hit the nail on the head. I've posted this in another forum on this site, but I'll repost it here in case some of you haven't read it.

A friend of mine owns a comic shop. He's got a couple of good sources at Marvel and DC. We we're talking about "One More Day" via email and this is what he told me:

Marvel wants to put the character of Spider-Man into such an awful predicament that the readers will be so relieved to get ‘their’ Spidey back that the ret-con will ‘go down’ easier.

Everything that's happened since Civil war has been part of a grand design.

Before Spidey went public with his ID, my friend told me it was going to happen. Everyone knows that this was a bad idea for the long run. Spider-Man can't remain a viable character if the whole world knows who he is.

Aunt May's shooting was a part 2 of the plan to screw up Peter's life.

He's told me what to expect by the end of "Back in Black". I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that Peter's life gets even worse and literally pushes him to a level of desperation we never thought possible.

All of this sets the stage for "One More Day". Quesada has already told us that by the end of the story Spidey is going to resemble the Lee/Ditko/Romita Spidey. We know what that means. That can't happen unless certain things are undone.....the marriage, the unmasking, and the event s that take place during "Back in Black". Telling us that Dr. Strange plays a large part in this story is a give-away. They're going to use him to reset Peter's life in a manner that undoes everything Marvel's published recently or they'll have everyone forget these things happened.

It's the Ultimate cop out....write the character into a hole he can't escape from then say "just for get about it all and pretend it didn't happen".

That post is all we ever need to know about this One More Day. Everything kinda pisses me off right now, but what really excites me is the fact that we are going to get Spidey stories that read and feels like the Lee Ditko Romita stuff after everything is said and done. Oh how I missed that kind of spidey book!

Well...i love those old day comics...for sure.

BUt do we need to flush down every bit of good progress, and the marriage to get it.

Why don't they start a new series... "ULTIMATE ULTIMATE" (LOL) if they want to make it like that.

Instead, they're gonna retcon and try to make everyone forget (Fans and characters).....which this too will get retconned eventually.

It's a waste of time.

And they ARE taking the chance of ticking off more oldtime/recent readers than they have a chance of gaining new 12 year old readers.

(and i just LOVE how someone just posts ten million pages of their comics for sale in the middle of a specific thread...LOL....oy yoy yoy.)

I am almost beyond caring what happens in the current Spidey comics these days. All I read is the Essentials, trade paperbacks, and back issues up the early 90s.

P.S. The Gathering of Five story arc sucked as it had Spider-Man "quit" agian in a cheesy way and brought Aunt May back in thel amest way possible. If Peter found his daughter instead, it would have been a great story but bringing Aunt May back and saying "who died was really an actress brainwashed and with plastic surgery" was just insulting to the writers.

I agree with some of your points, except for which May was brought back. Plain and simple, Peter and MJ shouldn't have a child at this point in their lives. Peter's life is too dangerous and he and MJ have enough trouble dealing with their relationship as it is. A child would only cause more problems and worse, further take the comic book off course. More cliche drama about baby May being a kidnap victim is not going to help things.

Aunt May can and has added more to the stories than a baby would. Yes, her ressurrection and the explanation of her death was dumb. But then, the mistake was in killing her off in the first place.

Anyway, let me rephrase:

If One More Day ends with Peter's past radically changed with the likes of say, MJ never having married Peter and not knowing his identity and him hiding from her to "protect her," does that not qualify as jumping the shark?

No, in that MJ knowing his identity was jumping the shark to begin with. Yes, Marvel conjuring some deus ex machina to dissolve 20 years of continuity is crap. But what they're dissolving isn't anything great. The only thing we can hope for (And this is a BIG HOPE) that someone wil come along who knows how to write, and come up with great concepts.

As the marriage marks Peter's completed journey into adulthood as an everyman who continues to go through life and trying to pretend he is still early 20-something and go back in circles and rehash stories from the '70s and '80s to me will be killing the concept of the character Lee created.

That's simply not true. First, as far as the marriage crossing him into the threshold of "adulthood", please elaborate on what the difference is between Peter's married and single lives, aside from him living with MJ (And sometimes not even that). But moreover, what folks comng from your perspective are missing is that Peter being the "everyman" has limits. He's the everyman up to the point of having superhuman power, deadly enemies and a mindset that he has to constantly save the world. Peter simply can't have a normal life, marriage, family. And trying to shoehorn him into that is definitely going against Stan's edicts. Stan knew that Peter couldn't have a normal marriage and in his one attempt to move Peter toward marriage with Gwen, he had Peter decide that his life as Spider-Man had to end.

I'm not saying Peter can't be married. But the marriage has to be true to Peter's life. And over the past 20 years, that hasn't been the case.

He is about progression and growing not mainting a status quo in flux. That is what Quesada wants and is why the character has sucked for the last 3-4 years and these stupid ****ing events is the pretense of growing, when it is not. It is boring and hurting the character.

While i agree that Quesada is completely wrong in his thinking, Peter playing house with MJ isn't progression either. I defy anyone to come up with anything important that's happened to Peter over the last 20 years because he's married.

BTW Kraven's Last Hunt is easily the best Spider-story of the '80s. It is more cinematic than most and in it Kraven hurt Peter Parker in more ways than Venom could ever dream of. C'mon Venom may look cool but in the comics he has done nothing as cruel as Kraven did and never came as close to defeating him as Kraven did here. I mean Kraven DID defeat him in this story.

KLH was a very flawed story. Just because it was dark and written in prose doesn't make it good. Kraven's defeat of Spider-Man was a complete contrivance. Kraven's attempt to be a "better" Spider-Man was ridiculous and the end of the story should have been about his learning why indeed he is inferior to Spider-Man. Then at least his pointless suicide would have had something of a point.

The Lee/Ditko/Romita Era was all really good (mostly)....sure....

BUT why can't we just hire writers that can make and shape their own "era"....??.......instead of harkening everything backwards.

I would like forward progression....not a long meandering walk thru a swamp that takes us in circles ultimately.

I have no problem retconning dippy things like totem-pole-powers (activate!) ......or Gwen sleeping around with fathers of her friends......or organic webbing (old fashioned web shooters coming back would be great!)...the unmasking!!!........or the entire Other "thing"....etc.

Realistically...i can see Aunt May dying (Again) but if they choose to have someone die, let's keep it that way. BUt yeh, aunt may could be sent off, in a respectful way, and i could go for that.

MJ's (death or mindwiping) however are both too conventional, because regardless, eventually it will be retconned, and thus, would be pointless.
It would in no way move the story forward. A year later (in a new spiffy event!!) we would have the return of either MJ from the dead, or the return of MJ memories, knwoing she is married to Peter. Then we'd be once again where we are now...just needing a writer who can write MJ and Peter BOTH as individuals and dealing with real world growth.

Spidey doesn't have to be single to appeal to a younger audience. Kids have lots of role models and "heroes" who are married and they still think they're cool.

The fact Peter Parker is married have nothing to do with not having the classic Spidey feel for the book. Its the fact that besides MJ and May, there is no supporting cast anymore, nada, zip. Peter and MJ needs to interact with other people besides each other. I would even argue that if the Spider-Man books still had a supporting cast, The Other wouldn't be as bad as it was.

I'm in favor of killing off Aunt May, maybe this will force the next writer to re-introduce the supporting cast. I have no doubt in my mind the minute we'll start seeing JJJ/Robbie/Betty/Flash/Liz etc. on a ASM, the book will be improved tenfolds.

Peter being married does not ruin the series. Peter is about progressing. Since Spidey is such a major factor in the Marvel Universe they can't rewind time and go backwards and keep the Marvel universe as it is. Instead, they're going to do the unthinkable. They're going to erase 40 years of history. 40 F U. C KING YEARS of history so Peter is back tos quare one.

Except he is still supposed to be close to if not 30, already. But they'll draw him like he's 20 and pretend it didn't happen and make him act like he did back in the early '70s and MJ will be a shallow shell again without depth, Flash Thompson will be an egocentric maniac who never grew up (oh wait, they already did that one...), **** Gwen and Harry will probably be back so they can relate it to the movies.

They do htis the point of the character, progressing and growing up, is lost. They'll lose Peter growing up so they can rehash storylines and eras that Lee/Ditko/Romita/Conway did better than them 30-40 years ago. You can't relive the past. And that's what Marvel is trying to do.

And in my mind they are killing the character by doing this.

Do you really think new fans will be found when this happens? I HIGHLY doubt it. They'll probably just lose maybe 10% of their on/off readership. And I'll be in that. It certainly won't win them any favors.

Stupid ****ing Marvel. Sorry but it really annoys me, though.

I think that Dan Slott could save Spidey. And since there's a very good chance that he's going to be writing for one of the titles...

Well said. KLH gets too much praise, simply because many fans think 'dark and violent' means 'mature and quality'. Lowbrow conceit.

JM Demattais, despite the fact his name is hard to spell, has written much better stories and is in fact my favourite Spidey writer after Stan the Man.

True. Marriage in and of itself doesn't ruin Spider-Man. It's just another concept, the success or failure of which is based on the skill of those working on the book. The problem is- that he's been married for 20 years and hasn't progressed either. The marriage was an ill-conceived gimmick, evdienced by the stories themselves. The proposal and acceptance all came from left-field, and then there was a wedding issue. The relationship hadn't had time to develop.

Again, I agree that Quesada's reasoning is way off. But the thing is, that ALOT of folks who are protesting the end of the marriage, are themsleves really only wanting the status quo to remain. Spidey isn't about progression.
Stan kept Peter in college for numerous years. And he wasn't graduated to college simply as a show of progression. It was because story elements and a more adult level of activity could be added. Peter had to live at home while in High School. In college he could get his own place, could travel without Aunt May's permission and so forth. Stan could write relationships that went beyond going to the prom. Spidey is about stories. Character development. Not just pointless progression.

Sure, Peter should be about 30. But if the past 10 years Marvel time aren't anything worth maintaining, then I can somewhat understand editorial wanting to snag those years back for a do-over. Yes, it would be best for them to carry on from this point, but that would again, further age Spidey, when he really should appear to be youthful. I honestly don't want to see a 40 year old Peter Parker, anymore than I want to see a 60 year old Reed Richards. I think its selfish of fans to want Spidey to age along with them.

But mostly, at this point, 99% of the writers simply don't want to write a married Peter. Busiek doesn't. Loeb doesn't. The only one who's cool with it is Peter David. And he can't write all the Spidey titles. If the writers don't like a concept, they aren't going to give us good stories.
As for readers dumping the title simply because Peter isn't married, they clearly aren't true fans to begin with. It isn't as though good stories can't be written with Peter being single. So if you're willing to not buy good comics because a single element isn't there, then life goes on. In the past few years fans haven't been buying the books with Peter and MJ together too much either.

Ultimate is about the only Spidey title I'll pick up, just because it's more true to the vein of what Spidey should be.

Spider-Man is a unique character with a wonderful history. He's changed the very nature of comicbooks by being a hero the reader could relate to. He's grown from a teenager to a young man, he's gone through high school to university, from job to job, girlfriend to wife....he's matured and grown. It's happened over forty years instead of, say, 15, but it's happened like no other major comicbook character.

Now Peter has been married for a long time, the logical next step is thay he become a father.

But because the current (and I stress current) writers on Spidey are unable or unwilling to progress the story that has been told pretty logically over the forty-five year comicbok life of Spidey, they want to mess it all up.

Should Peter age? Well, he's been in his twenties for more than twenty years, let him be in his thirties for twenty years, then let's decide about forties.

^ I agree.

I hate status quo. I think that is what killed the book for most of the '90s and what is killing it now.

I think him marrying MJ was a great decision that was because Marvel's hand was forced when Stan Lee did it in his comic strip (or was going to). Then in the '90s after writing the marriage pretty well at the beginning (what I liked about KLH was not only Kraven defeating Spidey but what losing two weeks of his life, at the beginning of his marriage no less, pushed Peter to want to do after coming out of "death") they stalled realizing he had grown into his late '20s relatively instead of his early '20s.

So they created the Clone Saga to rewind it with Ben Reilly. Stupid idea to try and replace Peter Parker with soemone else as Spider-Man (no ****) so it was time for a redo, yet again and they brought Norman back. Oh but a by-product of this "saga" was Peter has a daughter.

Peter and MJ are now heartbroken over losing their daughter and with Osborn back the series takes a decidely dark (if weak, but less weak than the Clone SAga for damn sure) turn. A few good stories surface, many bad ones too, though.

So now fans want baby May back. Let's give 'em Aunt May back to divert their attention, even though she was given a GREAT mature and dignified send off in ASM #400.

So then they try and kill off MJ. That doesn't work and pisses fans off and turns Parker into a constantly depressed widower. So bring MJ back but make her dump him within a day. Well ****, it still doesn't work.

Then JMS at the beginning of his run simply wrote a Spidey comic with him growing up and taking a steady job (high school teacher) that wasn't a gimmeck (like working for Tricorp or whatever) or unsteady for a married man. He brought MJ back slowly and they had a rough patch of returning to married life.

But it worked. Now the next step logically would be returning to them wanting to be parents. I want to see growth. As Kevin said the strength of the Spidey mythos has been Peter growing up and changing and being something other than a superhero stuck in the status quo.

But they are afraid of change again so Marvel just creates shock value stories to get our attention. Y'know, like Sins Past or Peter unmasking himself or Aunt May getting shot in a cheesy soap opera way. And now Back in Black.

They are going to press rewind and erase 40 years of great history.

The Peter/MJ story when well written is great and seeing them spend five years trying to get pregnant as a subplot and the idea of him balancing parenthood (the baby would only age a month for every 2 years roughly at the pace the series goes) would be interesting.

But no we'll just erase it all and pretend he is a teen again, even though Ultimate Spider-Man was written for this reason.

BTW I garuntee Gwen Stacy and probably Harry Osborn will return on the reset for nice movie-freaking tie-ins.

Great.

I understand your points man, and your very right to a degree, but i have to disagree with you on something. The thing is whether we like it or not, Spiderman and every other marvel title is also about progression. Time passes by and we need to see these characters age and move on with life otherwise it will lose credibility. 20 years ago the writers already made the decision to turn peter into a married man, a decision that was in my opinion an excellent one. The writers have already made the bed now they must sleep in it. Yes there are alotta stories that could still be written with Peter single but its too late man, Peter's married and we can't go back to his single stat quo. Think about it, do you really wanna see Peter single again for another 20 years. After all this time with him being in love and married, do you really wanna see him go back to being a bachelor? And if they do make him single again, every time after that where he meets another woman, we, the fans, will know that that relationship will never become of anything. IF they are able to get rid of 20 year marriage, how the heck is Peter ever gonna find true love again?

I hate status quo. I think that is what killed the book for most of the '90s and what is killing it now.
You hate the status quo. And yet you're upset with ending the marriage. Which has been Peter's Status Quo relationship for years.

That hurts my head, man.

This progression thing isn't true. Back in the 60's when Spidey blew up, there was no progression to be seen. People loved Spidey because of the stories. Because of the element of realism injected, in that Spidey had to struggle through the same things as everyone else. You never saw Batman or Superman worry about money. Even Marvel's other characters like the FF, Ironman and Thor didn't really have to worry about such things (Except the for the one case of FF #9). And while Stan injected realtionship issues into the other books it was mostly melodrama. Thor couldn't marry the woman he loved because she was mortal. Sue was torn between Reed and freakin' Namor. Ironman didn't feel he should to be with the woman he loved because of his damaged heart. But Peter struggled getting a date because the girls thought he was a dork. And after he got dates he had to juggle them between being Spider-Man, as one might believe would happen if one was a superhero. There was realism there, but none of this progression folks here are mentioning.

And who says progression has to be in such a cliche manner? Why does progression for Peter have to be what it is for so many others? Why does it have to be marriage and children? Certainly this isn't the only way one can "progress" in life. People need to stop figuring that there's only one direction Peter can go in, and look at what's realistic for Peter as a character.

such as things are, Peter and MUJ would not realisitcally be able to have children. Over the last few years, thetir homes have been destroyed, they had to depend on the Avengers for a place to live, and now they're on the run with Peter's identity commonly known. They're under so much stress, as to be unlikely to even be able to conceive.

This "progression" being mentioned has only occurred 4 times over 45 years:

1. Graduating High School
2.Graduating College
3.Getting Married
4. Having a child

This hardly makes for this being the theme of Spider-Man as a character.

And let's face it. Alot of Peter's story structuring depended on his youth. That's what made him unique among superheroes. Again, Marvel's other heavy-hitters were dealing with life in their 30's and older. Peter represented the youthful end of Marvel's story-telling. To remove that is to make him just like every other hero.
