Got yelled at and made a mistake at work today

GAH, if it makes you feel any better, I'm MANAGEMENT in retail, (the biggest chain in the world none the less) so I have the REALLY pissy customers that I get to deal with

It's happened to me once ot twice, while I was passing through a department that wasn't mine at Officemax.
I have no idea about printers, and some guy was asking all these questions about it's functions, which I had no clue about. He told me to go find someone else, but he told it to me like I was a child. I got someone else, but told him to be careful, 'cause the guy is a total a**hole. Something like that happened everytime I had to go through there. I was pretty much a stockboy the whole time I was there, and would have to go get printers and desks and stuff from the back room. I got to the point where I'd tell them I'm just the runner, and have no clue about the merchandise. Lordy that job sucked. Toward the end, I'd just unload trucks and sit in the back till they either realized I wasn't on the floor or needed something really heavy from the back.

I work retail on the rich side of my town, I've gotten yelled at plenty, but I do like messing with the high school kids. This 16yo was buying a pregnancy test, and I asked her if she wanted her receipt, she thought about it and then said no. I proceeded to tell her "Best not to leave any evidence huh?" She then got mad slammed the counter and walked out.

LOL!
If she was older, she would have said "Oh, do I look that young? Thanks."

I work at a certain electronics store (which shall remain nameless) in the area where they sell video game consoles. During the Christmas season, you'd be surprised how irrational people can get when they want a sold-out item.

"Do you guys have the Wii?"
"No, I'm sorry. We sold out last week."
"But I really need one."
"Sorry, we don't have any in stock."
"Look, I got kids at home that really want this thing. Everywhere I go, people say they're out, and I'm sick of this bull****!"

I wanted to hang up on her so bad...

I have never had problems with clients just because in my field you are dealing with very high level people in a professional environment but I have had the occassional shouting match with people on the other side of a negotiation. One guy basically interpreted everything I would say in his favour and then would shout when we said someting contradictory. I then had to shout at him to shut him up.

Of course, when I started out I did have a boss holding a baseball bat over my head at 3 in the morning telling me how useless I was. That was typical investment banking experience.

Worst abuse I ever took was when I was working in a pubr. When the whole places is packed to bursting and there are two people behind the bar, its kinda hard to serve everyone in time, but some people get so pissy just because you serve someone before them, even if the person you served was waiting there longer.

That job was hell. Pay was great, but I had drinks thrown at me, bottles thrown at me, I got called all the names under the sun and at one point some guy tried to drag me over the bar by the back of my shirt because apparently I was ignoring him. I'm glad he was drunk enough not to suceed.

Never, ever again.

In the place I work at, I find that while many customers are just plain stupid, it is the more, how should I put this...the more "well to do" a person is, the higher the level of rudeness and hostility they can possess. They feel "entitled" to whatever they want, even if their "demands" are completely off the wall.

I've dealt with some real pains. A woman demanded that I personally take her groceries out to her car because she had just had a manicure and she didn't want to ruin it by having to grab her bags. NO!!! A woman once demanded she be allowed to take her 100+ item order through the 8 item or less express lane because she was late for her yoga class. NO!!

The people who have less money to play around with are usually easier to deal with. (Not always, but for the most part) It is the wealthier people who will lie and cheat over a 25 cent coupon. And get nasty about the whole deal when it is pointed out that either the coupon had expired 6 months previous, or they didn't purchase the item in the first place.

But I must say this. When I worked my way though high school 25 years ago, I remember people were stupid, but I do not ever recall anyone who was downright rude, nasty, or as demanding as they are right now.

Maybe it was just my experience, by thats not true. Not by a long shot. Management is soooo much easier than having to work on the floor or as a salesperson. The truth of the matter is that while you do have to overlook the store or dept you manage, its easy compared to dealing with every half wit that comes in. So much less frustration, if you know how to manage it. I worked management for a few years and it was probably to date the easiest job I have had. Just didn't pay enough.

You're failing to mention the jackasses that refuse to deal with anyone but management though.

Thats really few and far in between though. And as long as you don't bull**** around with them, tell it to them straight, they aren't that difficult to deal with, believe me. I can tell you that half of all the problematic customers who sit and fight and argue tooth and nail with a manager, its the manager's fault for not taking charge of that situation. If you get a manager that bull****s around with a customer and just doesn't know how to deal with it, thats where you get all the managers complaining about how tough their job is. Fact is, they are making it tougher on themselves.

heh, the title of this thread reminds me of the "Lindsay Lohan is a ****/Cocaine Addict" title.

I've never really had any problems with costumers at work. I was like the best cashier ever for 4 months, and now working the floor, it's been just as easy going. If not more.

I didn't clean my room this one time and my mom yelled at me. It made me sad. :(

This happen to you guys?

thrift store customers are brilliant, makes me glad i'm a furniture pricer now.
customer: "there's no tag on this, can i get a price?"
me: (knowing custumer pulled cheaper tag off) "what's that, there's no tag on there?...that'll be 24.99"
customer: "oh, the tag is right here..it says 14.99" (grabs tag hiding underneath something else)
me: "nope, that's not the right one, 24.99"
then there's the obligatory customer trying to find a way to try and tell me they saw the tag on their earlier and it must have fallen off and mysteriously ended up under a stereo or something..

Quit f**king up my purchases and I won't have to tell you you're stupid anymore. Deal? :cmad:

While that sometimes can be the case, in MY experience its usually not. I deal with at least one irate customer; pissed off that we can't break policy just for them, each and every shift I work. Add to this the number of employees who just bulls**t around and don't expect repercussions for it, and you have days where you just want to shoot people. May I ask where you were management, and how many employees were under you? I'm management at a busy Wal-Mart Supercenter with over 500 associates under me.
