What would you prefer, I watched BB again last night, and really noticed the huge difference between the two cities, can we expect maybe a 3rd change for the third movie? Or will they keep with the TDK view of the city. or perhaps it'll become more "crazy" to suit the criminals, what are your guys thoughts?

I'm personally hoping for it to go back to the look of BB.

I liked the Narrows and Arkham from the first, and the rest of the city from the second.

with the exclusion of the Narrows, it's pretty much the same.
Ironically, in The Dark Night, we see Gotham at daytime a whole lot more than we do in BB, so that may throw alot of people off. In the beginning of BB, Gotham resembles a futuristic metropolis more so than Gotham but that look of the city was abandoned when Bruce returned to America. I can not figure out why, I always wondered why the architexture of Gotham seemed to revert backwards over time.

Both of these images were taken in New York ( According to the titles) and both portray very different ideas about the city. It liked both, portrayals of Gotham City because it made it seam like a real place, because as you can see from the two images above every city has layers.

Everything in TDK > Everything in BB

Except for the sonar thing

I agree with markstrange,

I feel the wide-panning shots of BB showed the same city the wide-panning shots of the entire city seen in TDK...

...Gotham is a HUGE city (It's supposed to be New York City, which has a gigantic population)... so I just figured we saw two different aspects of the same city. In BB we same all of the slums and "ugly parts" of town, and in TDK we saw much more of the financial and corporate districts....

thats it exactly, much of BB's action took place in the Narrows, which had its own look, while none of tdk takes place there, also the previously mentioned heavy use of daylight in tdk which i thought was great. it made gotham seem like a real living breathing city where things are happening at all hours, not just conveniently at night so batman can come out.

Although I understand most of BB happens in the Narrows, there are a couple scenes of it downtown where it pans out and well, feels much more like a futuristic city. As well, in the third installment would you prefer a Narrow POV or inner city, like I understand the cities supposed to be getting "better" since batman arrived, but I can't help but think its supposed to get worse before it gets better, and that they should of had an even more grittier look to gotham, which I'm hoping for.

more crime does not necessarily mean darker lighting, more garbage and clutter, or more grime on the buildings

The best non-Narrows look I've seen for the Nolan films thus far is Gotham in the climax of Begins. I really think they nailed it best in that area.

And yes, the daylight stuff does take away a bit of the Gotham flavor.

I much preferred the BB look of Gotham, it was for me the perfect blend of a real city and a more darker setting. TDK also looked great but for me I felt the atmosphere lacked some. I already know I'll get bashed for having an opinion that has a gripe with TDK though.

The Gotham in daylight was used to visualize the character's descend into more dark and dark situations. In the first act there finally is the possibilty to act against the criminals in daylight, through the great white hope Harvey Dent. The final act of TDK, as you will all surely remember, takes place almost entirely at night. I think it's brilliantly done. Even if it takes away from the Gotham flavour.

:whatever: No you won't. The look of the city is the LAST thing worth bashing someone over, and as long as you don't act like a jerk when you present an arguement, you'll be fine. Get off your persecution horse.

Personally, I'd like something like BB's Gotham with a gray color scheme(BB had gold and TDK had blue).

I agree with the some of you - pretty much Dark Knight's Gotham was the samething. It was that the Narrows and Arkham were not featured.

Again, people are forgetting that yes, the Gotham in Dark Knight was still digitally enhanced. The shots of the (new) Wayne Tower; the skyline is friggin huge. Also, check out the skyline with the ariel ferry shots.

^Yup, big time CGI altered, the skyline is ridiculous in that ferry shot.

I like both looks, TDK just expanded the scope of the city is all.

^I agree. One of the reasons I liked it so much was due to the expansive nature of it. It's one of the few comic-book films that feels worldly in a global sense.<BB, in a less thorough way, Iron-Man and X2 were also the same>.

So, will the third movie then mostly take place in the Narrows? or the City..or will we see a nice mix of both. I really felt begins gotham city was very different then the dark knights after re-watching begins after seeing DK in theatres.

There wasn't a Gotham City in TDK. It was just Chiacgo. Curiously, all the monorails disappeared... did they get taken down after Ra's? or is it just a mark of sloppy art direction?

watch the movie again. It's there in many shots.

Well I really did like Gotham City in TDK but the Gotham City in BB really suits the Batman universe. They should do a mix of both cities in the sequel, or just use the BB Gotham City to show how Gotham's been like after the hunt for Batman and how criminals have wrecked the city and stuff

What scenes justified re-showing those things? Were we ever in a position to see these sights? Not really.

He didn't venture into the Narrows<via-"it's lost"> When he traveled outside at ground level, it never showed him around Wayne Tower or any locations where the train would be.

Sloppy art direction? That's quite a statement.

I do have to say that I prefer the Wayne Tower from Batman Begins, unless in the Dark Knight, it's Wayne Tech. I really doubt it's Wayne Tech because in the script, it says that it's Wayne Tower.

I really don't know the decision behind the change; someone needs to ask Nolan about that.

repairs from Begins after the monorail crashed under the lower levels?

It's painful to admit when you love the film, so I doubt it's gonna win me any agreeal for saying it. But it's true. The monorail network was such a big feature of Batman Begins, that for me not to have noticed its presence in one shot, having watched the film 4 times, shows in an inconsistency. Just one scene in which a conversation takes place on/nearby an evident monorail line, or coming off one of the stations would have sufficed. In accordance with Batman Begins, it is the city's most distinctive feature, and yet in the sweeping city-wide panoramic crime drama that is The Dark Knight, it doesn't even figure. It would be like a film set in and around central london, covering all the major landmarks, but not actually seeing the river once.

Gotham city is as important to characterise in a Batman film as any of the characters, and The Dark Knight didn't do this as well as Batman Begins in terms of its physical aesthetic. It's one of its admittedly few failings.
