Gotham City Concept Thread

@ BL:

But it does. And it always will. Just because someone plays Jim Gordon in a Gotham RPG, doesn't mean anyone will be less inclined to play him over in UDC. For that matter, why not make a Metropolis RPG, focusing around the Daily Planet? To me, it makes as much sense.

We discussed that. A Metropolis RPG showed it had no chance when we all decided it wouldn't last.

Seriously, it was discussed and that was the verdict.

Superman doesn't nearly have the range of characters that Batman has. It's not even a contest.

Or, how about, I just delete the Ultimate DC Universe RPG? You know, let World Of Heroes be the only RPG in the DC section. Because I just recently read a slew of posts driven by the same character in that RPG, and they were stunning. They were spectacular. They were, frankly, some of the best things I've read on here in a long time. And all of it was inspired by one man, one character. Guess who he was?

Oh, but since that won't last, I guess I better delete that RPG too. Given that all good stories and all good series' involving Batman as an inspirational pull don't tend to last.

Don't make me out to be saying that no one should participate in this if they want to. I'm only listing the reasons why I would hesitate about joining.

The WSS RPG had great stories, and amazing writing. But goddamn, did people get bummed out when it died. Like, really sad about it. To put so much work and heart into something like that and then it just dies. Not end, mind you, but for lack of better phrasing, gets cancelled. This RPG is almost exactly like WSS, with the exception of this happening post-TDK, and it's almost certainly as likely to die, causing just as much frustration as it did the first time around. That's just the reasons as to why I wouldn't be too excited to put a great deal of thought and time into writing a character, not why everyone else shouldn't bother.

But dude, that's why I made this thread in the first place. I wanted to work with everyone to weed out the bugs in the system, so we could make it an RPG that would last. So far, I've gotten very little, but people are still interested. What am I supposed to do to make it interesting to you? Is there anything? That's the kind of questions and propositions I want to hear.

To quote you, EB, it's not even a contest.

Batman doesn't nearly have the range of characters Star Wars does.

To be honest? I don't know.

Right now, I don't see that there's anything that can be done that will keep the WSS aspects everyone loved, while at the same time making the game last.

A city and an entire galaxy are comparable...how exactly?

Furthermore, this is a COMIC BOOK forum.

I must have misunderstood, since I thought you were the one making comparisons between the two.

But if this is a COMIC BOOK forum, then I suppose we should shut down the Video Game RPG that hopes to be brought back, since that obviously has nothing to do with comics.

I was comparing Metropolis and Gotham. A perfectly reasonable comparison. One's a city, the other's a city.

You wish to compare Gotham and a GALAXY. Not a perfectly reasonable comparison. Maybe if you didn't take everything so goddamn literally...

I wish no such thing, sir. What I meant was, that I misunderstood this;

Well, at least Star Wars is going strong...

As a sarcastic jab at the Star Wars RPG, where you were assuming it had just as high a chance of survival as this one does.

Obviously I was mistaken.

Okay, okay, this is getting way too heated, even by my standards. Let's all take a moment to cool down and observe the issue at hand, which is slowly starting to become lost. The issue is this: Can a Gotham RPG survive? Sensei argues it can't, Eddie argues it can, but where does that get anyone? No one's going to be universally right, because so far, none of us have. Obviously, there's something in the concept that people like, so let's try to find some middleground.

And furthermore, let's all take it down a notch and remember that these are games we're dealing with. We're not debating the end of the world.

I didn't realize this debate was getting heated  No one has started the name calling or the swearing, so I thought we were all good.

But seriously, yes, I suppose this has gotten as far as it's going to go.

The first Star Wars RPG didn't make it through one IC page. WSS? lasted for two months. By all rights and reasons, the Gotham City RPG should do better - based on past experience. In my exasperation about this dead horse, I make a sarcastic comment that suddenly becomes part of the argument.

There's a phrase for that: WTF?

Well, we were good, but when you took the polar bears off the leash and stuck a packet of meat in Syn's jacket pocket, I thought it had gone far enough. :csad:

He did what? *looks in pocket* Oh ****! :wow: *runs*

But back to the topic...this got too personal. It should've been "it won't work cause" and, "here's what we can do to fix that by".

Right, there's really no need to get this worked up, EB.

I simply meant that the SW Universe has a much, much deeper and bigger world of different characters and worlds than Gotham City does, so that I would think it obvious that it would have a bigger chance of suriving. You obviously think I'm wrong.

There's a phrase for that: Differing opinions.

A deeper world of characters means nothing with dedication and passion. You could have an endless universe of Armless Tiger Men, and that RPG would fail. Coming back to my earlier point, as a COMIC BOOK forum, it goes without saying that all of us should be fans of comic book characters. Thus, a Gotham RPG - even one with limited character selection (allegedly) - should do fine because we all care enough.

The first SW RPG proved that there aren't enough people on the Hype who care enough about the EU and all that.

And the current Star Wars Concept thread proves there are plenty of people who are willing to give it another shot, dedicated to making it work. Sort of, you know, exactly the same as is going on here.

...except there doesn't seem to be "plenty" of people dedicated to making this work. Hence why I made that comment. Star Wars is doing great, but this RPG - the one with a better track record - is stalling.

And now that we wasted so many posts explaining a few random comments...

I am deeply sorry for the grave error of misunderstanding one comment. I mean, sarcasm is such a rare commodity on the Hype, that it is baffling I would confuse something as being meant to be sarcastic.

And now I see that it's becoming heated, so I'm going to go ahead and bow out of this thread. But I'll be sure to check in and see if things get moving, and if you do manage to work this out (Which, believe me, I hope you will), you can count on me joining up.

I'm not sure how to classify my statement. It wasn't really sarcastic...because it was true.

...

Now I'm just confused. :csad:

Actually, SW has the better track record. Around five years ago, there was a Star Wars RPG that I recall did pretty well.

Five years ago? Jesus. Isn't that close to the dawn of the Hype itself?
