Greatest Rock Band Of All Time???

ANTHONYNASTI said:
Those bands are considered great not so much for how long they've been around but for how much their music influenced and imapcted the entire music world, and rightfully so. The Foo Fighters will never ahcieve what those two bands as well as so many other bands achieved.

So a band can have the best sound in the world, but if they don't influence the entire world they're not one of the greatest bands in the world? Ok.

The Rolling Stones IMO experimented with a broader range of musical stylings (highly debatable, no doubt), The Beach Boys (some would argue their credentials as a true rock band) had better vocals and pretty much started the whole pyschedelia trend (something Sgt. Pepper's is often miscredited as doing)

Yeah, I disagree with the notion that the Stones experimented with a broader range of styles. The Beatles left the road and that opened up the gates to endless musical possibilities and they capitalized on that. And I believe that The 13th Floor Elevators should be credited with defining psychedelia as a musical trend, although if they influenced more bands that The Beatles and The Beach Boys as you mentioned is up for debate.

The reason these bands are influential is because not only do they have amazing sounds, but they are influential throughout the music and social world. Foo fighters are just a standard grungey/rock band, nothing special, nothing exeptional, not even good really..

Yes, I agree. And The Foo Fighters do not have the best sound in the world. The White Stripes are probably the best band out there right now, and The Killers aren't bad, either.

Well, The Rolling Stones experimented with reggae, disco, funk, punk, etc., but considering those trends came into full swing after The Beatles, I guess it's pretty mucn not too big of an argument.

Not too familliar with The 13th Floor Elevators.

Well, then again, that's your opinion. And that's okay. I think if one would actually listen to "The Colour And The Shape", they'd have a different appreciation for them. Very special, very good, very exceptional.

I'm afraid I will have to disagree with your opinon here, I think the killers. kaiser chief, franz ferdinand are all basically the same sub-standard band. They only play chourds, rather than tunes, and all have similar vocal styles. I personally detest them all. It's like radio one plays the same music constantly, and it all sounds the same! White stripes were good on their first 3 albums, De gjin(sorry about spelling), jumble jumble and white blood cells.

I didn't say they did. Also, the White Stripes lose any respect for their based on the fact that Meg White couldn't drum worth a s**t.

Since Dio passed the torch...

It's actually pretty much a fact that those bands are highly influential in the music and social world.

Well I garuntee most bands today wouldn't cite Led Zepplin or the Rolling Stones as a major influence on their music or their lives. Most bands name bands nobody has ever heard before. Unless you're the White Stripes, who aren't that good anyway.

Well, to be honest, I've still yet to get one of their albums, but from what I've heard I think Meg is very good.

Agree to disagree.

How has nobody in three pages of this thread mentioned:

PINK FLOYD?

Because they're psychadelic prog/experimental, not strictly rock, same reason hawkwind isn't here. I admit they are up there too, but Stones and zeppelin are higher on the great list than pink floyd.

She plays the same beat in every song. She is horrible, whoever tells you she is very good doesn't know good drumming.

Are you ****ing serious? Whether it be their music, their style, or anything else, all the bands out there today cite those bands as major influences. To say they have no influence is incredibly moronic.

I never said they had no influence. Please don't put words in my mouth.

I said most bands aren't totally influenced by them.

An incredibly biased view at rock and roll. May I ask what qualifies as strictly rock? Because there's no such thing. Rock and roll is a very broad genre: hard rock, soft rock, pop rock, prog rock, punk rock, etc. There's no such thing as strictly rock.

If those are the two definite options then I would have to go with the Stones, hands down. It's unfortunate that they've played themselves out for so long however. They're early American blues influenced albums were outstanding. Exile on Mainstreet is a must for any collection.

Well calling pretty much anything on radio one 'music', seems like a crime to me. There is the pyramid of skilled guitarists, that is generally agreed on,

Hendrix
Gallagher Santana

Then after this, we have several bands etc, but this is the greatness of guitarists, so any true guitarists will cite at least one of these.
