AgreedToy Story might be the only one in which each film was better than the last. You could say Lord of the Rings, but that's more like one ludicrously long narrative to me.
LOTR is by far the best trilogy in my list.
I thought the Mad Max trilogy was pretty good. The first movie being the weakest (although the ending was the same thing that Rocharch did to the kid killer in the Watchmen graphic novel). The other 2 movies were pretty good.
Pirates of the Carribean (till they make a 4th) has some great moments, and good CGI.
About the Wathmen/ Mad Max comparison: It ticked me off so much that they changed that scene in the movie, especially since The road warrior was playing on one of Veidts tv screens later in the movie. Its like if you're going to reference the movie anyways why not leave the scene in? that and i thought the alternative rorsach scene they used instead looked really off the way it was filmed
of topic but yeah
what I think is interesting about trilogies or at least the ones of the past 10 years or so are how they are often linked by common actors.
Bruce Spence played two different characters in the Mad Max Trilogy, but recently has had small parts in The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (as the scary looking official from utapau that obiwan talks to) in The Matrix Trilogy as The Train Man, and The Mouth of Sauran in the Extend Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Christopher Lee of course played Count Duku in star wars and Sauruman (sp?) in the lord of the rings.
Hugo Weaving plays Agent Smith in the matrix and Elrond in Lord of the rings.
Sir Ian Mckellan plays Gandalf in lotr and Magneto in the 3 X-men films.
Its all rather arbitrary and probably just has more to do with good actors who are open to doing genre movies, but I think it's interesting.
Agreed
I use to have Indiana Jones in my favorite trilogies until they made an that 4th one![]()
Yea, I notice stuff like that too.
I also think about what these actors will be known for, in the future, as in giving their face to epic characters from books, comics, or epic movies in general.
For example: regardless of oscar winning dramatic roles... Harrison Ford will always be Han Solo/Indiana Jones.
Will McKellan be forever known as Gandalf or Magneto?
I always thought with the impact of the Matrix movies, that Weaving will always be 'Mr. Smith', but he one uppped those by being 'V' and voicing 'Magneto' and he has another upcoming biggie too... that I don't remember now.
Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine... etc.
Lord of the Rings take the whole damn crown.
Then Toy Story.
I actually don't think there are many great trilogies and I think Trilogies are kind of overrated to begin with. Usually it feels like more stories could have been told and the third film rushes things so that it can be a trilogy and be one of the cool kids. Sometimes they film movies 2 and 3 back to back and make them connected and that also sucks, especially since the payoff in part 3 is rarely worth it. Just make good stand alone films and end the series when it's appropriate.
My top picks:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Bourne Trilogy
Star Wars (sure ROTJ was disappointing but whatever)
I still have to see Toy Story 3.
Lord of the Rings take the whole damn crown.
Then Toy Story.
It's a shame. POTC had potential to be another great trilogy. Lesson here: NEVER film sequels back to back. Horrible idea.
You mean what LOTR did? Yeah, that was horrible...
