If it's such a bad film storywise I wonder why they chose to pump so much more money into the special effects.

If the story is bad, the effects money is to MASK the bad story. That is why any film that has bad story try and make up for it with eye candy.

They tried to use the Transformers formula on a super hero flick, should have known better.

sorry, but the transformers formula this most definitely is not. It's got way more character driven story and all that wonderful jazz

Every other review is saying that it is basically a glorified light show, Hal is a tony stark ripoff, script is weak, villain is weak. It`s all spectacle over substance. Sounds like TF to me other than the fact that the action in GL is worse.

Transformers doesn't have character moments. Not good ones anyway. It's just flashy special FX and action scenes.

Seems that is what GL is.

God it's gonna be ugly next week GL drops off drastically..

Imagine if it doesn't even make 300 million WW?!?

Damn, that would suck. But i'd get some kind of sadistic glee from the fact that Geoff Johns is probably crying into his Hal Jordan pillow cases at night.

But I don't want to see a guy like that fail because he's a talented guy. He made Green Lantern relevant again. Well until the movie destroys it but that's a different story, haha.

Ehhh I don't think he's that talented. Not anymore anyway. The last good comic he wrote was Sinestro Corps War.

Since then he and his Green Lantern books have been coasting along, lucky that DC makes it clear that GL is the new big franchise, having all the events be Lantern based etc. In short, it sells so high because DC want it to sell high. Just like Avengers sells high because Marvel wants it to sell high. Even though both GL and Avengers are crap at the moment.

That's how the comic industry works.

I didn't see this at all. I keep reading that comment but I saw nothing of Stark in Hal Jordan. Maybe I missed something but i didn't see it.
Exactly. How can you even attempt to rip off RDJ? It's impossible.

Transformers like the hangover doesn't even try for that stuff it's just a big adventure movie with spectacle strong enough to engage an audience.

This superhero movie about a self involved playboy type arching around the power he's given/finds, whilst getting closer to the business partner he's always loved is straight Iron man.

Just cause it's bad doesn't make it TF. It's clear they tried to have those things in their formula. A failed formula doesn't make it a different formula.

as much as I agree, I'm curious how much longer you are going to use this as spring board to sell your campaign against Johns?

To use a poker analogy they were pot committed.

I'm not trying to sell anything or change anyones mind. Just stating facts and opinions.

It's a fact that the Green Lantern books sell so high because DC wants them to sell high. That is how the comic book industry works.

What is opinion is that Johns, currently, is a terrible writer.

Hal and Carol being romantically involved coworkers predates Stark and Potts. You can't say GL is ripping off Iron Man with that. And what superhero doesn't arch around their powers?

i still dont understand why some fans think that reviews will have an effect on the BO. its like some here are ignoring all the good movies that bombed and all the bad movies that made money.

I think it's because GL wasn't that anticipated in the first place. It wasn't exactly getting massive hype, despite it's desperate marketing campaign. We was even talking about the hostility towards the film weeks before it came out.

Now with all these reviews added to the equation, I don't see GL doing anything special.

The kids will flock to it this weekend. But kids are fickle, they'll move onto the next cool thing... which will be Cars 2 and Transformers.

hey I agree(it actually pisses me off)
I've just noticed you seem to bring it up every few pages and without provocation. And I wonder what you'd be saying if this was a Dark Knight Caliber hit.

I not not talking about which came first(even though as far as hollywood they have enough freedom that yea it does kinda matter). I'm talking about comparing GL's formula to TF vs Iron Man.

the general public doesnt care about the reviews. they never did. if this movie will underperform it will because of negative word of mouth. and this will start between weekend and next week. if they will like it they will talk positive about the movie.

fans can not just make this up. they can not make up that reviews are important to the BO. this is nto how this works.

I'd say the movie must have been an improvement over Johns' comics ;)

I know they don't care about reviews.

But it seems they don't care about this movie anyway. There is barely any hype for this movie to begin with. Bad reviews and bad word of mouth won't help.

$3.35 million from midnight grosses. Off to an OK start but one shouldn't take midnight numbers to heart as translating to terrible or great opening weekends overall.

Hangover 2 would like a word with you.
