I can't wait for the friday numbers. It's going to be hella interesting!

Unless she's lying to you and her and your uncle are really buying you a bike at Sports Authority.

I don't get it... I'm kinda slow though. :oldrazz:

She said a bunch of people just came in, they got there pretty early.

I'm interested in seeing how good this does over the weekend as well.

The number will either be revised up or down. It's just very early numbers going by how it's been doing today.

It's 8:43pm in my neck of the woods.

The point is, it should make over 20mil on friday. Thats what Hollywood Reporter is saying.

X-Men: First Class's early numbers were 23mil and it's revised numbers was 21mil. GL's friday number could go up or down.

If this does better than anticipated, some will view it as a double edged sword if they honestly didn't care for it. Me personally, it means any flaws can be remedied for a sequel.

That's how I feel about it.

While there was nothing too damaging in the first that can't be solved in the sequel, they've got a long way to go. So much so that if a sequel does miraculously do the franchise some justice, the disparity between the first and second film is so vast that it might as well be a different movie altogether.

I wanted so badly for this series to work, but this movie sucked all the energy I had left. I truly do not feel like they deserve to make a sequel. At least not with this creative team. The cast deserve better.

60M would be pretty good but I don't know if it has leg to get to 400M.

I think that 60mil isn't that special considering the 3D tickets and the high likelyhood that it will have bad legs.

The fact that people on these boards aren't defending it is a sign that word of mouth is probably going to kill the movie.

Even if it makes Thor money, they overspent to the point where they would still be in the red. They have to make Iron Man 1 money just to break even, and quite frankly I don't see that happening.

It won't happen.

Goddamn, this had such the makings of a hit.

I just want a sequel to fix the problems of this one.

With how many bucks they threw at GL, they have to be expecting at least 500mil wordwide with 250mil of that coming from north america.

With Cars 2 coming out next week and TF3 the week after, GL will be dead in the water after 6 days. It needs to make as much money as possible this weekend.

300 million a lot of money behind this film I dont see it making it out of the red but can any one tell me what happens when a movie doesnt make back it budget? Also I know this apart of the box office but merchandise will that all factor into it?

After the so so entertaining film that was Batman Begins, a sequel that really nailed the tone and surreal factors of the comic was the second attempt the production needed. I'm sure GL can be salvaged.
(Similar things have happened with spidey and Xmen.
FF not so much.)

I think what separates Marvel Studios from WB is what they do with their sequels, calling it now.

after DVD's and tie in sales I'm sure they'll have made their money back.

that being said, this is all GL needs to do to get a sequel

maybe but, that's not how they wanted to make their money back.

People need to stop saying 300M as the budget. 150M is the budget. If this thing gets to 400M it will get a sequel esp with good dvd sales. You make that marketing budget back up in merchandise and other stuff like games and toys. If this film gets good sales on that then it will definitely get a sequel.

I'd rather have a good.... no forget good, an excellent Green Lantern film which can be remembered for years to come like Superman The Movie, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1 and 2, X2, etc.

This.

At least Marvel has the liberty to have their **** right. At this point for WB it's inexcusable to continue crapping on DC's properties like this. They really have no clue what to do with these properties and don't care for them anyway. They want to make a fast buck but ironically they could make mega bucks giving these properties to the adequate talent that cares enough to present them properly. Ie: BATMAN.

Batman got lucky a couple of times with directors and writers that at least cared enough for the material to present it with some grace (Burton/Hamm, Nolan/Goyer).

Other movies based on DC published (keyword: published; not necessarily mainstream DCU) properties worked for the same reason. The studios that handled them greenlit them with filmmakers that respected the material enough to present them with some grace and quality. Like A History of Violence, Stardust or Road to Perdition for example. Ironic then that the studio with actual major stock IN DC comics can't do the same.

They can't ever find any talent with the same passion towards their other mainstream DCU properties outside of the Bat or at least they don't try to. I'm sure somewhere in Hollywood exists a writer or director who will never be passive of the massive potential of the GL property. Or someone who would've gone out of their way to give fans a Jonah Hex movie they could be proud of and the general audience a damn good modern western.

Too bad they'll never get a chance. WB just dishes the DC joints out to hired guns that don't really care about the material. Some talented people but people who are not invested enough in any of this material at all to give it their best at all & do it with an obnoxious apologetic tongue in cheek style cause "it's based on a comic book".

Too bad they just don't GET it as they have no idea of the real value of what they're trying to exploit. To be honest if the ball was severely dropped as it's said to have been I wouldn't be mad if this tanks altogether and kills the future of DC based films for good. For the simple fact I've been more of a DC guy all my life; I love these characters too much to see them being handled so poorly and beneath their big screen potential. I rather they not make any movies outside of Batman at all if that's the attitude they're going to roll with.

I'm watching this at a Sunday matinee cause due to the bad WOM and how I see a major dropoff coming after a predicted modest at best 60 mill or so opening it will probably be the only GL movie I'll probably ever get in my lifetime. I've been reading the books since the days of Gerard Jones & am a unabashed fan of the character and his world. For that reason I will see it on the big screen cause I'll never see any of these guys there again it seems. My expectations are severely low but nevertheless I'm there.

However it can't be a lie that everybody just says that it was wasted potential. A proper GL movie would've been a freaking gold mine; seriously. Would've cost way more to make than this version sure but it would've been an investment that would've paid off for years.

That's the ironic part. They tried to hard to make the material "accessible" to general audiences by rushing through and attaching people who didn't even care when in the right hands it could've made more money as we the readers of the comics know the true worth of this property.

Presented right in it's full blown all out space cop galaxy spanning glory (75% GLC and or space based adventures not this 75% on earth stuff) this could've been a real winner. With a Hal Jordan embracing his fate and actually enjoying helping out around coast city and his sector in the first movie. If you want also have him under Sinestro's mentor ship. As opposed to chickening from his destiny for most of the movie leading to zero suspense & lots of boring filler since you know he'll embrace it anyway & reducing Sinestro to an over-glorified cameo at best.

Then eventually it would've turned into a lucrative franchise that could've contained 4 different trilogies with 4 different humans in the lead not just 1 like the other superheroes. A great distinction from other comic properties and a lot more money in the bank cause of it. Then a series of films with all those characters in one movie plus all their alien peers that would've brought in even more green.

Could've been something monumental for comic book films. Something that could've lasted as long as Bond. If they had not rushed this and treated it with the proper care. If they had given opportunities to those truly passionate about this material. They could've had a REAL franchise starter and money maker on their hands.

Get a clue Warners.

BB didn't need any salvaging like GL apparently does. BB was good to begin with, and they just built forward from that to better with TDK...which is really what any sequel is for (aside form just capitalizing on the money/popularity of the last). Same with Xmen1&2, and Spidey 1&2. If GL is bad as the general consensus claims it is, it's a much higher hill to climb...and ultimately, probably an unfair weight to put on the shoulders of a sequel.

If a student fails his courses...he's asked to repeat until he can move on, or he drops out...they don't send him to the next grade and hope he does better. Same should hold true for movies....especially ones that cost 9-figures to make.

The movie cost at least 200mil to make. I don't know where you are getting that 150mil number from. Also the movie looks like it cost 200+mil to make.

There was absolutely nothing to fix in Batman Begins in terms of it being a great Batman adaptation. TDK was a great addition but calling BB "so so" and trying to create a comparison with GL is like trying to say 2 + 1 = 4. Quite simply put there is no comparison between the two.

Begins is a beautiful and intimate film that finally gave me the Batman I had always dreamed about seeing on screen, while GL is something that WB and most people and I'm sure some fans would rather soon forget about.

I'm in the crowd that actually prefers Batman Begins over The Dark Knight. Tonally two different films. I prefer the epic adventure of BB than the more crime drama of TDK. Both amazing movies, I just prefer BB.

I was really hoping GL would be in that list of "epic adventure." I'll definitely pick it up on Blu Ray, unsure if I'll see it again in theaters. Maybe it'll be better the next time? :( My mom loved the movie. But she's a big fan of RR in general.
