"Guardian Archangel:" The Official Character Discussion Thread

I'm still damn angry with Fox cutting Angel out of the battle...

Something needs to be done about Fox sticking their noses where it doesn't belong.

And flaying.

Flay, castrate and burn.

Anything involving slow, painful, torturous death sounds good to me. :)

I'm going to be majorly pissed off about this for the next couple days...

I'm more angry that we don't know why he was cut, not that he was just cut..

When I heard "but it didn't make it past the powers that be", that set me off...

Profile: BEN FOSTER SPREADS HIS WINGS AS ANGEL IN X-MEN: THE LAST STAND

by Carl Cortez
May 29, 2006

While X-MEN: THE LAST STAND adds many new mutants to the mix, one of the most anticipated is the character of Angel played by Ben Foster. Blessed with the gift of angel wings through his genetic mutation, Angel is conflicted about who he is and who is father wants him to be.

"I think that Rogue is one of the most conflicted with what can be considered a blessing or an illness or disfigurement, but when it gets to Angel it’s a beautiful metaphor," says Foster. "It's seeing somebody who has been blessed with a 16 foot wingspan and then be haunted by, in his opinion and his Father's opinion, to be a horrible disfigurement. What a beautiful thing to think about and how our differences as individuals in turn make us special. That is the success of this series."

Wearing those gigantic wings was an ordeal unto itself, but Foster loved every minute of it.

"The preparation in the morning was like the alarm goes off, it is 4, and then strangers strip you down, and you are cold and then they start painting you with glue," laughs Foster. "Then they put the wings on there and then you are an angel. I wasn't laughing, I dig it now, because this was a big budget film which means there is a lot of cast, which means there a lot of ups and down time so you can't unglue. So you take naps on this couch."

The outsider element to the franchise is something that Foster took to as well, and it certainly allowed for preparation of the role.

"Every actor talks about not getting along in school or every artist has that 'I was an outsider, I was a haunted kid,' and I think all people feel that way at some point," says Foster. "Let's say you are an athlete and you are just really tall, really young, and it's awkward and it's strange. I think that all people feel different or not good enough, not good looking enough, not smart enough, not interesting, not enough. Whether or not we cater to our groups and their opinions defines us to be the people that we want to be and hopefully we can take 'X-Men' and these kind of modern day Roman Greek Gods with great powers and faults and see a bit of ourselves in that and remember that very basically it is important to be you."

And with that, Foster feels that is why the X-MEN films are so popular.

"I think that is the success of the series is that is about people having to confront themselves like any drama and how do we fit in," says Foster. "I don't think that is specific to us. I think that is why the X-Men is a universal love machine."

Hey worthy, what was Zak's reason again? budget?

After watching X3, I thought Angel did get good screentime, not as much as I wanted, but, he got some good scenes. Ya got to remember, It's his first movie, his first introduction to the X-Men, you can't expect Angel to do battle right away, to me, I don't think it was his fight, he had his own problems to deal with. He just needed a place to go and be accepted.

That's what I think anyway. :)

Production restraints, problems with the wings, it didn't make it past the powers that be at Fox...

In other words, I hate Fox even more than I did beforehand.

Wolverine was still kinda new when he was a part of the Liberty Island mission in X1.

Angel could have held his own, it's not like the opposing side was more trained than he was. And I think he would have been accepted faster if he fought with the team. ;)

I would have been fine with Angel not being in the final fight but the marketing for him built him up for it. I hated that they built him up so much...he was destined to disappoint with that marketing.

Fox knew he was cut from the battle and being in uniform, yet they went ahead and advertised him in uniform. God do I hate Fox.

Here are some Angel storyboards Mike Vena did for X-Men 2. The proposed but aborted cameo the mutant with wings was going to make.

Well, Wolverine was always a fighter, we know he can hold his own when it comes to battle new or not, that's pretty obvious. But Angel's not a fighter, IMO, I don't think he is that much, so who knows how he would've handled a major battle like that, what could he have really done besides swoop down and take injured humans out of harms way? I know his wings could be used as his defense, but other than I don't know.

Regardless, I liked how they used Angel. At least we finally got him in a movie, after we already had two. Better than nothin' right? :)

Wow, those storyboards are great. I've never seen those before, too. What is Angel doing there? It's a bit hard to make it out.

He has great strength too. Remember how he breaks out of those straps and breaks free of those doctors?

And alot of those Brotherhood pawns weren't too good of fighters. He could easily use his wings to swipe up enemies and toss them to far lengths.

It is.

Some X3 fanfiction I wrote...:

WOLVERINE
Magneto's headed for Alcatraz.

In the distance, a figure appears from behind a doorway. It's Warren.

ANGLE ON: Angel. He knows what he has to do now.

CUT TO: INT. MANSION HALLWAY
A worried Warren catches up with Hank, Logan and Ororo.

WARREN
I have to go with you guys!

All three adults turn to Angel.

LOGAN
Kid, it's a huge battle out there. Your not trained. We can't risk it.

WARREN
I know what Magneto's going to do. And my dad's at the center what he has in store. I can't let him hurt my dad.

Storm and Wolverine exchange glances.

STORM
For once I agree with Logan. I cannot risk having an untrained student go out there. It's too dangerous.

WARREN
As long as I have my wings, I'll be fine.

Hank looks at Warren. Beast sees the fierce determination in Angel's eyes. He then turns his attention to the other two.

HANK
The lad's not going to budge, Ororo.

(turns to Warren)

HANK (CONT'N.)
Am I right?

WARREN
I can go with you guys, or myself. If you haven't noticed, I do have wings that will fly me over there you know.

(pauses)

WARREN (CONT'N.)
Listen, my dad might not have done the most responsible thing, but he's still my dad. And a human being. I love my dad to death, and I'm not just going to sit on hand and knee while god knows what happens to him. So, I can either ride with you all, or I can take myself. Either way, I'll be there. But it would be nice if I'm not tired by the time I reach Alcatraz.

Storm sighs.

ORORO

(pauses)

ORORO (CONT'N.)
Hank, get Warren a suit. He'll need one.

Let's hope Angel and Nightcrawler get some scene together in X4.
