Apocalypse The Timeline

^ It's not "fanfic"; it's an accurate interpretation of what we were presented with.

Kitty didn't create black holes that were tunnels into other universes (as in Star Trek), she sent someone back in time to their younger self. She did it many times with Bishop before the Wolverine scenario.

So, by your theory, each occasion in the future when Kitty sent Bishop back a few days to avoid a Sentinel attack created another timeline?

Going back in time a few days in order to avoid capture isn't making the kinds of changes that would be necessary to alter the timeline enough to create the kind of alternate reality that results from Wolverine's trip to the past.

It would boil down to the definition of an "alternate reality"

I mean, some physicians propose a "many-worlds theory" in which our reality could be coexisting with other realities in which our alternate selves have taken decisions different from our own.

But I wouldn't say the X-Men universe has alternate realities. There are characters that are aware of their own reality being rewritten (Xavier and Logan) and the original timeline is no longer running its course, parallel to the new one. You can see it being erased when the characters vanish into thin air and wake up elsewhere. They are in the same "reality" although not in the same situations.

Is there an alternate reality in which the X-Men were all killed off by Sentinels? Probably. But that's not what Fox presented.

Nonetheless, I would agree that what I just wrote is probably technical nonsense and that it makes more sense to refer to the two different timelines. :P

The term "alternate reality" can just as easily refer to a changed singular dimension as it can to an entirely divergent and parallel dimension. In the case of both FRINGE (circa Season 4) and DoFP, the term is applicable in the context of time-travel altering things so dramatically that it creates an alternate path for the universe relative to what had happened in it before.

I'm sorry, but did we really need another timeline thread? I think this can be merged with one of the existing ones.

Amen.

It's an altered timeline. Not an "Alternate" one.

It seems to have become an obsession for a lot of people.
Well that is fine, but the Apocalypse section currently has the following timeline related threads: "The Timeline", "Fixing the X-Men timeline... always.", "Timeline(s) in Apocalypse", "Timeline?" and "The Jean Grey & Scott Summers Micro-Timelines" as well as several other threads that focus specifically on the 80s or the OT part of the timeline. I just think that's a bit of overkill and half of these could probably be merged.

A bit of an advice, you could just ignore it. This talk will just go on forever especially if the future films retcon more things.

Timeline/continuity errors discussion is my least fav discussion here at the X-Men board just like Fantastic Four reverting to Marvel is my least fav discussion at the Fantastic Four board.

Right in old timeline there was many littles alternates timelines in 2023 due to Bishop's preventions

Huh?

That doesn't make any sense. The divergence doesn't happen in 2023, which is when Kitty sends Wolverine's mind back in time. It happens in the past in 1973 from the moment Wolverine's older mind takes control (switches places with, whatever) his younger self.

That's back in 1973, so the events of DoFP didn't happen in the original timeline. Yes, we've all asked questions like, 'then in the OT how did Professor X start to hope again' and 'then in the OT how did Magneto escape', but the how doesn't matter. It must have happened, just in a different way.

In the OT :
Xavier manages to overcome himself, Magneto manages to escape, Mystique manages to escape from Trask's Labo [Past]
Scott/Jean die in 2006, Sentinels (Mark I) take the X-mansion in 2010, Angel dies in 2011, Beast dies in 2015, Xavier makes new alliance with Erik when futures Sentinels are announced in 2015 [Present]
Storm/Iceman/Colossus die in 2023 [Future]
