Watching it now and it's as good as I hoped it would be.

“I said in the script notes: ‘I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don’t want to do a movie with Thor,'” Gunn said. “I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies, and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don’t understand how to write that character.”
I am going to be honest, as much as I like James Gunn, I find this to be incredibly weak.
1. Hemsworth is talented enough as an actor that he can make anything work.
2. Here is a novel idea... READ A THOR COMIC BOOK if you want to know how to write Thor. There is plenty to read.
Or maybe he just didn't want Thor in his movie.I am going to be honest, as much as I like James Gunn, I find this to be incredibly weak.

He essentially is saying that. He wrote the script, he was happy with it, and his story wasn't written with the intention of using Thor. He didn't want him in the movie.I think he could've just said that instead of the i DoN't UnDeRsTaNd ThE ChArAcThEr stuff. I mean, come on.
