What's wrong with a comic book like Runaways reaching a wider audience? If they come aboard when he comes aboard and leaves when he leaves, what's the big deal?
That's how books get cancelled. If the book takes a nasty drop in sales once Whedon leaves due to fairweather readers, what happens when the book stays in that rut for about a year? Bingo! Cancelled.
For that matter, what's wrong with reading books just because your favorite writer is writing them? Isn't that the
point? Every single person here has an affinity to one writer or another and often follows that writer across different projects. How many of you here have said something like "[Writer] is going to write this book? I'm totally there." or "I think I'll drop this book when [Writer] leaves."? How is that in any way different from this situation?
I'm not in that category. I'd be more likely to drop/pick up a book b/c of an artists than a writer. Writers can have good arcs and bad arcs, but an artist either sucks ir doesn't. It is a popular thing to say/do, you're right; but I don't do that.
