Guillermo del Toro (upcoming The Hobbit) is developing Pinocchio as a stop-motion feature with the Jim Henson Co. as a darker version of the original fairy tale.

The project will be produced by JHC co-toppers Brian Henson and Lisa Henson along with senior VP Jason Lust. Del Toro will executive produce.

Del Toro's working on the screenplay with Gris Grimley, who illustrated a 2002 version of "Pinocchio." Grimley and Adam Parrish King will co-direct the film.

No...develop Hellboy 3 before Ron dies. But, with Del Toro's excellent visual style...this might be a great take on a childhood classic.

The best person for the job

He seems to be adding project after project to his work schedule. I wonder how productive that is. I thought he was busy until 2047?

Sounds awesome.

How many pojects does he have lined up. I really only care about the Hobbit being made first. Which it is. Though I am interested in the Jekyll/Hyde film.

I think are many more original ideas out there he would be suited to adapt. The fairy tales are getting worn out. Pan's Labyrinth was enough of a warped fairy tale. GDT should move on.

Ron isnt that old...

isnt he busy enough?...

that man needs to cool it

this movie would be perfect for Del Toro's style

So I guess another film gets in the way of Hellboy 3. :( But yeah, he is pretty much the perfect man for the job of directing this, I look forward to it.

Del Toro just needs to focus on one picture at a time, i hope the pressure of doing all these films doesnt downplay his work in the hobbit.

Update (After two years...)
Gris Grimly Updates 'Pinocchio', Big Names Working on Stop-Motion Adaptation!

While artist-turned-director Gris Grimly just unveiled the trailer for his next short, Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind, he also revealed some brand new info on his Pinocchio collaboration with Guillermo del Toro. "This film is being produced by Guillermo Del Toro and The Jim Henson Company," he tells Bloody Disgusting. "I will be co-directing with a stop-motion veteran (who's name is yet to be announced) and Nick Cave is on board to compose the original score. MacKinnon and Saunders (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Corpse Bride, Mars Attacks!) are also involved in the puppet fabrication. There are interested voice talents that only add to how promising this project will be, but I cannot announce them yet." You'll find more info on Grimly's version of the wooden puppet beyond the break.

"In Grimly's version of PINOCCHIO, once there was a lonely woodcutter named Geppetto-who dreamed of having a boy of his own. So one day he carved a boy out of wood and named him Pinocchio. When the puppet comes to life, it's Geppetto's dream come true.Except Pinocchio turns out to be not such a nice boy after all. Pinocchio enjoys nothing better than creating mischief and playing mean tricks. As he discovers, being bad is much more fun than being good. For a while, anyway. Happily for Pinocchio, he will learn that there is much more to being a real boy than having fun."

My guess is that Henry Selick is the director.

Definitely. Which means I'll probably see this.

It could be interesting. I'm not super excited because there's like 1000 versions of Pinocchio out there.

I remember having a book of this story with really creepy illustrations , I'm glad they're doing a darker version. I've stll been meaning to see the 2002 version though

You probably had the Gris Grimly version in which this movie will be based off of (Grimly's co-directing it).

Oh no this was fairly early stuff that wasn't gothic like that . I like Grimly's work I'm going to have to check more of his stuff out.

BUMP. Deadline has a new article about this that includes three pictures of concept art. It will go into production later this year.

i love the look for this. i thought alfonse curon was directing this?

I'm liking del Toro's visual style on the designs. Too bad del Toro didn't have the time to direct this since he's busy with At the Mountains of Madness.
