Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Jerry Weintraub are developing a new take on the Edgar Rice Burroughs-created Tarzan. Variety says the studio is negotiating with Guillermo del Toro to direct.

John Collee, who wrote Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and most recently scripted the WB animated hit Happy Feet, is in talks to write the screenplay.

Del Toro, who grew up reading Spanish-language translations of those books, feels that the classic themes are still compelling, and that there is new ground to cover in the Tarzan mythology by turning back to the original Burroughs prose.

"I'd love to create a new version that is still a family movie, but as edgy as I can make it," Del Toro said. "There are strong themes of survival of a defenseless child left behind in the most hostile environment."

"John will be writing it alone, as I'll be in production on 'Hellboy 2' and pursuing writing projects of my own," he added. "He's got a great sense of adventure and the wilderness."

More Tarzan? :( Well, if del Toro is directing then I'll check it out. :)

Cool!!! Can't wait to see what Del Toro has in store for us.

What happened with the creature from the Black Lagoon? Did he leave that project?

Interesting. I wonder if this has anything to do with Mountains of Madness? Wasn't he looking a studio for it? Maybe a deal with WB: "I do Tarzan and you let me do MoM." Dunno.

The book was pretty awesome, the movie with Lambert sucked... Hopefully they can make a good movie

This should be good. And, best bet, this is going to be real people!

I think they'll cast a newcomer as Tarzan. Don't think we'll see anyone we know swinging around in loin cloths. But, a newcomer wouldn't be "this famous guy as Tarzan" it would be "he is Tarzan."

The movie should be epic as live action. Still waiting for a live action remake of Jason and the Argonauts and a new LIVE ACTION Sinbad movie. I mean with the effects of today, these films will really be epic territory.

Thats Del Toro's problem, it seems like he starts alot of stuff but never gets around to finishing it.

And yes, he left the project.

Bastard, I'd rather see the Creature then Tarzan. :(

I've been awaiting a new Tarzan film for a long time, and Guillermo del Toro is the best man for the job!

Can't wait!

He never was on the creature remake. He pitched some ideas to Universal, but that was it.

GdT doesn't start that many things; he's rumored to be working on stuff but never really has time to do them. He's simply too busy to do everything he's rumored to be working on.

There's a creature remake in the works right now. It'll probably be garbage, though.

I'm not big fan of Tarzan, I didn't like the Tv show on Sky One so hopefully I see something different from the Tv show.

We better get some Phil Collins on the soundtrack.

Are you talking about the modern Tarzan? Tarzan coming to the big city with all of these corporate bad guys and the like?

Because hardly anyone liked it, hell the creator of the show is dissing it now as saying that it was a bad idea.

Please NOOOOOOO!!!!. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Disney movie. But, I finally want to see the Tarzan that my grandparents grew up with. I know the technology is there to make this a new-again and exciting cinematic experience with the leaps and bounds that technology has gone through.
