Following yesterday's first look photos, the first official trailer and poster for the animated film The Book of Life from producer Guillermo del Toro have arrived. The story follows the journey of Manolo (Diego Luna), an aspiring musician struggling with pleasing his family and winning over the love of his life (Zoe Saldana). There's some truly stunning animation on display here, like a mix of the world of Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, but in the style of the Day of the Dead celebration. Channing Tatum seems a bit out of place as a rival romancer, but this still looks like an original adventure for everyone.
The Book of Life is directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, who co-wrote the film with Douglas Langdale ("Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness"), and produced by Guillermo del Toro. The animated film tells the story of Manolo (Diego Luna), a young man torn between fulfilling the expectations of his father (Hector Elizondo) and grandfather (Danny Trejo) to become a bullfighter and following his heart by becoming a musician. Before choosing a path, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds, where he must face his greatest fears. Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube and Placido Domingo also lend their voices to the Fox Animation film which 20th Century Fox sends to theaters October 17th.9

I saw the trailer in front of How to Train Your Dragon 2, looks stunning.

I'm very surprised how bad this looks. Considering the talent involved, where is the atmosphere? Why do the jokes fall flat? I hope this trailer was just badly put together and is not indicative of the film itself.

I'm sorry. I think that quote fits "Home" more than it does "Book of Life".

Just saw the trailer for this and I love it! It's got vibrant colors and looks to be a great way to bring some Latin culture to the big screen in an animated film. Personally I'm looking forward to this more than Big Hero 6.

Just watched it, on Day of the Dead no less:woot:, great fun, and looked incredible. Xibalba and La Muerte are incredible visually and conceptually. Manolo singing to the Bull spirits completely choked me up.:waa:
LOL @ when you suddenly hear Placido Doming belt out Cielito Lindo!

I enjoyed the movie. It was fun seeing a children's fantasy film coming from a different root than just European folktales. It played with its folk lore aspects in an interesting way. I grew to like the wooden dolls aesthetic. A few really odd moments though.

Creep. I mean really?

Agree.

Astounding La Muerte cosplay.

She's great! Does she get to hang with the Disney Princesses?

So help me out hear, a while back there was some buzz about Disney unsuccessfully pursuing the licence/trademarc on the title Day of The Dead.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/10/us/disney-trademark-day-dead/

Was that what became this movie? That they just abandoned and then Guillermo Del Toro picked up and turned into Book of Life?
Or are they two just coincidental completely unrelated projects?

So does Disney still have a Day of the Dead themed project in the works?

Not getting made while Guillermo del Toro makes original projects and helps first time filmmakers make theirs.

In a world where we so often complain that nothing new gets made, I'd say this is a fair trade.

Don't know. A while ago it was in production.

All we know is that there is an untitled Pixar film about Día de los Muertos that is going to be directed by Lee Unkrich with no release date yet.

Saw this yesterday, thought it was great! At least 8/10, maybe even 9/10. It had a mix of everything - great characters (especially liked La Muerte and Xibalba), music, visuals, even some emotional themes that added a surprising amount of heart to it. It was so good that I wouldn't be surprised if it enters the running for this year's Best Animated Film Oscar, even though I haven't seen most animated films that came out this year (the only other one I've seen so far is HTTYD2, and The Lego Movie).

Highly recommend seeing it, and in 3D.
