Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Here I was thinking "Oh, Rajah looks cool" then they spring Blue Will Smith on me.

The only way this movie could have won everyone over is if Robin was still alive and he was portraying the Genie again.

It's not the same and you know it. The Joker is a character who has consistently been reinvented for decades, he's malleable because you can tell a hundred different Joker stories. This is literally the exact same story as the one told 25 years ago, using the same visual cues, style and music, it's basically doing everything in its power to remind you of the movie that came out when you were a kid, except it doesn't have the thing literally everybody loved and remember about that movie. If this was an Aladdin that was completely removed from that film then you would be 100% correct. But this isn't.
You missed the bit where I said “not related to Genie” then, which I added to try and make clearer what I was asking, but maybe I should have just put it in another thread to to be more obvious and not be off topic. Genie is the best thing about Aladdin to me (my favourite Disney classic) and it will be very difficult for anything to ever live up to that (especially with the benefit of being animated classic vs very difficult to get right live action). But I heard/hear the same thing about Christopher Reeve as Superman, RDJ Iron Man, Hugh Jackman Wolverine (although people are beginning to come around now) and guess who - Jack Nicholson Joker! Those Jack Nicholson debates took place way before the internet though so it depends how old one is and whether they had the right circle to be debating those things at the time. Anyway I’ll have to make a separate thread about this as it doesn’t seem like it’s possible to talk about during the initial reaction phase to this blue Will Smith lol.

They should have just had him in human form, adding a blue CGI body was never a good idea.
Should have gone the Xerxes in 300 route with Will Smith's genie. Just make him look much bigger than everyone else.

A topic worthy of conversation IMO.

I’m not sure what people expected, at least with regard to the Genie.

The genie is sort of horrifying to begin with, and he was always weird looking.

I don’t hate it. It’s maybe a little bland as a design in some ways. They tried to sort of straddle the line of having the Genie have distinct features while also making The Genie look sort of amorphous and featureless like he often did in the film where he had the glow all over him, and that’s probably part of what's led to CGI complaints.

I think they made the right move not having him glow all the time, though.

And I do like the way his cuffs are part of him, running up into his veins.

I suspect once Will Smith does his thing, a lot of the complaints will disappear.

Jafar sounds kind of "classic mustache twirling villain".

I think the main thing that has disappointed me so far the Cave of Wonders entrance. Not the design, more the presentation. But also the design.

Good to see Rajah. Jasmine’s outfit is cool although I want to see the classic blue one too.
It's in the next shot of the trailer.

Actually though...

I've never really cared or noticed much when it comes to CGI even when it's lackluster, but Jeezuz, this is...at least not very good. The first trailer had me interested, but this one has pretty firmly slid it into the "I'll watch it if the right person asks me to" category.

Let's see..

Jafar’s actor doesn't look villainish enough his voice is terrible.
Genie looks Goofy and his Blue CGI body reminds us of Scorpion King.
Actor playing Aladdin looks a bit old to play him.
Green screen is noticeable in some scenes.

and so on... :o

I'm fine with Will's Genie. It's Jafar that I'm disappointed about.

He looks as one would expect him to look if you thought they'd take cues from the animated version. Only thing missing is the little blue glow....

It's similar to James Earl Jones with Darth Vader. From a visual standpoint, it seems they should have gone the full CGI route for Genie.

ALADDIN is still in post-production, VFX are NOT finished yet, and the film is still over 3 months out.

Calm yourselves.

It's because they don't actually have the creative heads like they use to. There's a reason Disney bought up Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel, it's because those companies developed and established brand. The only real success Disney has had in live action over the last 20 years is the Pirates movies. Everything else has either failed or been just a copy of something they did better 25 years ago.

And the biggest reason for Pirates' success was Johnny Depp taking risks in his portrayal of Jack Sparrow. The studio executives at Disney hated it and thought it would be a failure.

This period for Disney will not be looked at fondly in the history books. They have become a financial juggernaut full of mega franchise properties, many of which they did not develop themselves. They can thank Feige and Paramount for developing the Marvel brand before they bought it. They can thank Lucas and FOX for developing Star Wars. And they can thank FOX for developing X-Men and Avatar.

Then maybe.....don't show the blue genie? Though to be honest I don't think CGI can save that.

You know... they never needed to show you Robin Williams face for everyone to know he was Genie. Here, Will Smith was already bad casting. But they somehow made it worse.

He looks how I imagine Leto II would look if they ever adapted God Emperor for the big screen. :funny:
