Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

I remember in the animated sequel jafar says that if he never found him in that bazaar he'd still be saying Polly wanna cracker to this day. So he either taught him or did something to up his brain power.

I guess that's what they figured? Who knows! Animation can always push limits a bit more. I mean, the Genie is a magical being so he gets away with being crazy and blue... Iago inexplicably talks like a person (it's never said that Jafar gave him that ability and why would he given that Iago is a bit of an annoyance?) so perhaps they just thought a parrot talking in a world of non talking animals was a step too far? I'm not really for it or against it. However I can see why they chose to not go down that route.

I could forgive the Iago thing and wasting Alan Tudyk to talk like a parrot if Jafar and the Sultan weren't such awful paper-thin characters with no personalities to speak of.

He probably experimented or did some kind of spell on him. Dude had a whole lab with weird stuff.

Parrots apparently have special voiceboxes compared to humans. In fact, rather than a larynx, they have something else called a syrinx. It's almost like a double voicebox which allows them to talk continuously through one while breathing through the other. Humans, on the other hand, have to stop to take breaths every now and then during their speech.

If they made it that Jafar found the lamp at some point and wanted to make a wish, but then Iago accidentally spoke a wish instead, that could explain why he is able to talk. If Iago said (and he was just mimicking) "I wish I could talk", then he could be granted the true power of speech via the Genie. That would be a quick and easy explanation for why he is able to communicate so eloquently.

It's weird how some people will get really excited when a handful of early reviews are positive, and then the rest start coming out :)

I mean at least you thought of something and tried. That's infinitely more creative than the rewrites by Ritchie and August.

It is no longer fresh at this moment!

Called it. People were too quick to call this film as salvageable. The reviews that were on Twitter, even the positive ones, weren’t exactly glowing.

I was never confident with Guy Richie to begin with. So this 61% rating is unfortunate. We'll see, maybe I would enjoy it when I see it this Sunday.

Ritchie had no idea how to stage or block his scenes at all.

Watching the film in the palace scenes it's like everyone is stuck in one place or one room like some sort of live stage show. The palace is supposed to be huge, but all the rooms look small and they barely move around in them.

It's weird because Ritchie is this normally kinetic frenetic director. He seemed clueless on how to do a Disney musical.

THING I hated the most:

They basically stop the middle of the movie for five minutes for Jasmine to have a #MeToo song. Look, it's fine if you want to rewrite Jasmine, but these scenes do not fit the rest of the movie at all and stick out badly. Aladdin is not the type of movie where you want to have some sort of #MeToo anthem. It doesn't work.

About what I've expected. Hearing enough good things about Scott as Jasmine to go see it eventually, but was never in a rush. I'm just so horribly paranoid that Mulan and Hunchback will be underwhelming, now...

Why would you even want to remake Hunchback of Notre Dame? That was one of Disney's worst animated films. beauty and the beast and even Aladdin I can under$tand. But not Hunchback.

These films have been underwhelming since day one. Jungle Book really has been the exception not the rule.

I like Jungle Book, and I know I'm in the minority, but i find it highly overrated.

Just listen to these and tell me what you think sounds better. What's with all the auto-tuning effects and reverberations? Is Will Smith really not a great singer?

I appreciate it more on a technical level.

Which one? I don't get why they added in all these extra post-effects. It sounds like they were trying to hide Will Smith's vocals.

I was referring to Jungle Book.

LOL sorry. I mean fair enough. Technically, I have no issues with the film it looks really well done. At the same time, I don't get remaking Lion King so it's photo realistic now but technically still animated.

Cinderella is great, and a vast improvement on the original. I have enjoyed them all since Cinderella. BatB is not as good as the original, but I rather enjoy it, and Cinderella and Jungle Book were big improvements imo.

Cinderella I don't have a lot of issues with as say I do Maleficent, which was bad.

But where's the line here? If we're getting to the likes of Hunchback of Notre Dame, does that mean we're doing Hercules too? I feel like going past the Disney Renaissance is just a disaster waiting to happen.

The reason Disney does everything.

Are we acting like they aren't going to make a cool billion at least on the Lion King?

I mean I get that and all but Hunchback of Notre was one of their lesser films and wasn't even a big hit when it was released. So why remake that one? It seems like such an awkward choice.

The way I see it, they like the idea of connecting the remakes. Which boost the box office for the lesser known, while making merch sales in their parks go up a bit. That is the thing about existing properties with Disney. They don't just make the box office back. They get those sells on limit edition stuff at their parks and online, and it really works out for them.

Hunchback won't make anywhere near something like The Lion King. But they will make it for a lot less, and make a nice bit of change on the back end.

So is it likely Disney didn't lose money on Dumbo which was one of their underperformers?

I just don't want us getting in the territory so Tangled and Pocahantas are suddenly getting remade. Also Hercules.

Dumbo was pretty expensive, but yeah, they probably aren't losing money on that one. Selling classic Dumbo merch on the back of it, probably going well. Especially when they are selling $75 plushies online and in theirparks. Yeah, it's insane. :funny:

Anything from the Renaissance and before is up for grabs. I'd be up for a Hercules. A film I rather like, but think they could do even better. So another stab at it, with the right creative, would excite me. But I can understand what others wouldn't. I don't expect anything like Tangled to be on the table right now. Too new and not when they are making a proper Frozen sequel.
