Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

So if we are going by 1999 as the end of the Renaissance...that also means Tarzan ;)

It took me all of 5 mins into Beauty and the Beast to become bored, and then there was the awful auto tuned voice for Emma Watson which did nothing but make me fast forward through her songs. Everything about that remake is inferior. An exercise in the mundane.

It sounds like you barely watched it, so how would you know? :sly:

Why would you even want to remake Hunchback of Notre Dame? That was one of Disney's worst animated films. beauty and the beast and even Aladdin I can under$tand. But not Hunchback.
Couldn't disagree more. I've always viewed Hunchback as one of Disney's most underrated pieces. Daringly dark with gorgeous music and a powerful message.

And yet...

I just rewatched it recently after not seeing it for a while and I still find it funny that Quasimodo didn't get the girl because let's face it, he's ugly :funny:

They aren't the strongest part, but I feel to see the difference between any other comic relief Disney characters..

These characters aren't funny and their inclusion makes no sense. If they were Quasimodo's imaginary friends, that would be one thing, and yet there is evidence in the movie they are actually real.

The difference is that in Hunchback they really clashed with the tone of the rest of the movie.
That's definitely true. Which is why they were cut from the stage show to great effect. I certainly don't think they turn it into "one of Disney's worst", though.

BatB was okay, but not great. I felt Watson was miscast as Belle and the lack of creativity was a detriment

I was sort of excited she was in it at first, then I realized she couldn't sing at all. Really should've just given her the Rebecca Ferguson treatment.

Definitely not. They aren't important enough for one thing. But they also go a long way towards holding Hunchback from being one of the truly great Disney films like Beauty and the Beast. They don't turn Hunchback into a bad movie by any stretch, but they do make the movie worse than what it would be without them.

I think more movie musicals should just dub the actors unless they actually are a good singer like a Hugh Jackman.

I would think a live action remake of Hunchback would be great in theory. With Beauty, Lion King, and Aladdin you have to live up to impossible standards. With the Hunchback you basically have a blank slate. The director of that film will have ALOT more freedom then say Frozen.

That being said the song Ave Maria was amazing and Judge Frollo was a boss.

Why did they cast Emma Watson as Belle, especially if she can't sing? It's not as if she's so super beautiful that she immediately screams "Beauty" for the title of the film "Beauty and the Beast". There are surely other beautiful actresses who are singers as well.

I know Lily James and Naomi Scott can both sing.

I am bias, but I think she fit Belle very well and I really enjoy her performance. When people talking about the singing, you'd think she was Brosnan in Mama Mia. They auto tuned her a bit (on higher notes), and she isn't powerful, but her singing is perfectly fine. I say this as one who owns the soundtrack and listens to it plenty.

Emma Watson had a name at the time was coming off Harry Potter. I think she definitely did bring along some of the Harry Potter fanbase as well for the film. She's also a grownup now and I think people were excited about her becoming a romantic lead.

I mean I think she is a beautiful woman, but this is just the direction they went with. But yeah I wish she got someone who could sing as well.

Plus I mean, I imagine there were some pushes from agents/managers etc to get her on this.

Her cast went over rather well, as did her performance with the masses. The movie made a killing and she did a rather great job of promoting it. Why Hermione was cast as Belle feels pretty obvious when you consider how big of a success the film was.

Watson was cast because she was a holdover from the Del Toro version at Warner Bros, which she was attached to, and that version was not a musical. And Disney was like, "oh look, a star who's already on board to be Belle, how convenient." She should've recognized her weaknesses and bowed out, but oh well.

If Lily James hadn't been so perfect for Cinderella, I'd say I wished they switched roles because with her naturally dark hair she would've been a fantastic Belle, but alas, I'd change nothing about Cinderella. It was the better movie and deserved the better lead.
