Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Someone on reddit mentioned that this looks like someone deepfaked Will Smith's face onto Genie, and that's probably the most accurate description of what it looks like. And to be honest, even that promo still looks off, in that his eye's don't seem to be looking in the exact direction of Aladdin, so the mocap is off as well.
Yeah, it's looks too much like they just threw his face on the body as if anyone could've just done it. Maybe if the head looked more like it, it'd at least look a little better.

I still maintain my position that there was absolutely no need for him to be blue in the movie, and that his "human look" would've worked perfectly fine for the entirety of the movie.
You can say they tested the waters on that front with the EW promo pics of the human Genie form, and that didn't really go over well with fans as well. I feel this trailer was a response to that criticism, and it backfired. It was a lose lose pretty much.

I'm not fine with this constant pandering, either.

Like that Mandarin short. Give me a freakin' break.

Anyway, I hope the Aladdin actor isn't as bad as he looks in the trailers.

I kinda feel bad for Ritchie and the cast. There's no way this movie will ever make people happy, they're screwed no matter what (aside from just not making it in the first place).

The more I see it, the less I'm bothered by it. Obviously the mo-cap is off, and the CGI needs a tremendous amount of polish. But to me this looks exactly like a live-action Aladdin movie (without Robin Williams) would look.

And regarding Avatar looking better despite being made 10 years ago, I felt the same way about Beast looking so much like a video game despite The Jungle Book being released ONE year earlier. Always bothered me how amazing JB looked but how mediocre and sometimes awful Beast looked.

Wow, Disney really knows how to squeeze a buck out of something. First they make a successful animated movie. Then they lock it in a vault for years and re release it every few decades. Meanwhile they make a bunch of hack ass sequels to cash in on the success and nostalgia of the original. Finally they reuse the script to make a live action version no one needs, yet tons of people will see.
Honestly I can't blame them for doing what makes money. However I do feel like Disney was one of the pioneers of animation, and a company that really elevated it to an art form, but now that they are making live action versions its like they are cheapening the animation.

Will is the biggest name on the cast, as far as I know. Pretty sure he's a selling point, despite his recent string of flops.

He has a very well-known voice. They could have done a full CG visual and people would still know it's him due to how famous his voice is.

The point is Will Smith as the Genie in live-action. Of course it’s a huge selling point. Like Jim Carrey as The Grinch. You want to see him perform it, not just voice it.

Do you really think Will Smith would do a live-action movie where his face isn't onscreen? He barely wears Deadshot's mask in Suicide Squad.

Honestly, who actually thought Will Smith wasn't the selling point? You've got a cast of literal nobodies in the other roles. Hell, we haven't even heard a line of dialog from the guy playing the title character for crying out loud, so **** knows what he's like as an actor.

I'm having a hard time imagining how Genie would look if he just had Will's voice...it would've been some photorealistic s**t anyway, so while it doesn't work for me, it's not too far off the mark.

To the average moviegoer, Will Smith is probably the only person in the cast they've ever heard of.
Which is not going to sell the movie. At all. The reason people are excited is because it is Aladdin. The biggest stars of the Jungle Book weren't seen. Yet it did pretty fantastic at the box office. Using Will Smith here beyond being unnecessary, doesn't seem to be working from a creative aspect. I am now trying to imagine doing the same with other famous CGI characters. Like if Groot looked like Vin Diesel, because was the biggest star in GotG. :hehe:

Did they really need to cast Will Smith? Also, they could totally show his face. Just no when he is the big blue Genie. The first time they showed him to us, wasn't as the big blue version of Genie.

Only other people in the cast I'd ever heard of before are Navid Negahban and Billy Magnussen, and most people probably don't even know them.

Well in fairness, let's face it, Robin Williams as Genie is pretty much the best-known and most beloved part of the original Aladdin, so in that respect, casting Genie with the biggest "name" is in keeping with that.

If someone isn't familiar with Aladdin but likes Will Smith, that's a selling point.

Robin Williams’s modern comedy style was a huge selling point for the original Aladdin.

Same here but with Will Smith’s comedic sensibilities. Obviously, it’ll be necessary.

Which is true. And beyond getting into whether he will be a good Genie or not. It has more to do with how they are trying so hard to make sure we see his face for most of the film. Disney made the Jungle Book. They are now making the Lion King. The Lion King might end up the highest grossing movie of this year. At least top 3. It is going to make 1.5 bil like it ain't nothing. They don't need the actors faces.

Will-Genie will probably be doing a lot of things that Will does, like how Robin's Genie had his mannerisms. Groot isn't anything like Vin and isn't human-like in appearance, so it's not the same.

And if you didn't already know Groot was Vin Diesel, you wouldn't be able to tell in the movie, from either Groot's appearance or even his voice.

The lead actor doesn't have to excite anyone. They are selling the brand, not the actors. What did the public see the kid who played Mowgli in to get people into the theater for the Jungle Book? Do you need to see Donald Glover's face to see The Lion King? Is it going to tank because we don't see his face? Why even announce Beyonce, we won't even see her face. It's ruined!!!!!

Gollum. Thanos. Hulk. Davy Jones. Yoda. Snoke. Every single character in the Lion King.

Having a similar face to the actor, is very different then what is going on here.
