Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

I've watched a lot of Youtube reactions for this trailer since it hit the internet, and I'm really surprised how deep rooted "A Whole New World" song is impregnated in the collective conscious( especially from 20 to 40 years old). People either cry or in awe when Jasmine started to sing. Even the most hardened seemed genuinely cheerful.

That was the best part of the trailer, IMO. I'm not excited for the film, but I'll probably buy Naomi Scott's version of that song immediately when it comes out because she sounded beautiful.

I agree. She's really singing in such powerful way. It might be blasphemy for some, but it almost sounds better than the original.

Songbird Lea Salonga using her head voice was majestic! :argh:

I heard a hint of auto-tune while Jasmine was singing in the trailer, so animated version of A Whole New World wins for me so far. She still sounds pretty great, though. I hope we don't get a lot of auto-tune in the movie like we did in Beauty of the Beast with Belle. I feel like there's a strong chance Lion King will have raw, real singing with the natural musicians that are starring. Say what you will about the singing in live-action Jungle Book, but I think the voices were actually authentic and devoid of auto-tune.

Random thought: I hope Genie refers to Jasmine as "Jazz", at least once in this movie. Don't know why, but I could see Will's Genie using that nickname with her.

Maybe call her Jazzy. And then Genie can say

“Jazzy, Jafar!”

I am watching the animated film right now... Will Smith doesn't have a chance. I do hope this film is fun, but yeah.

I know how beloved the Genie is (hell, he's my favorite Disney character), but you could say that about pretty much any character in these live action Disney remakes. I know Robin Williams is a tough act to follow, but more often than not, the animated characters will always be better than their live action counterparts, save for maybe the wolves in The Jungle Book and a few of the supporting characters from Beauty and the Beast like Maurice and Lefou.

The Jungle Book and Cinderella are overall much better films now imo. And a lot of that is character work.

I adore plenty of Disney animated films, but there really is only one Genie. And his energy carries the entire film in a way, I don't think any other Disney animated character does. Will Smith looks and sounds asleep in comparison.

Jazzy reminds me of Laddie.

"...can we call you "Al" or maybe just "Din" or how about "Laddie"?Sounds like, Here boy! *whistle* C'mon laddie!"

This looks like Will Smith is having a Birdman moment.

Years from now he's gonna be seeing this Genie in his hallucinations.

Yeah, as far as Genie goes, they were doomed from the start. They should have just done a completely different take on the character and not even tried to make him anything like Robin Williams' version.

I've listened to a few other things Naomi Scott has sang and she has a really nice voice, so I don't think we'll end up in an Emma Watson scenario where they have to autotune everything because she really can't sing.

I agree with you about The Jungle Book being a better film than the original (haven't seen Cinderella), but I still think that as great as Bill Murray is, the original Baloo is still a more memorable character. Same with King Louie, same with Mowgli. The story of the live action Jungle Book was quite an improvement, but the original's characters still had a certain charm about them.

can someone explain the "I could just... make you a prince" joke? I really don't understand what he means and why Aladdin is like "oh, no"

My best guess is that he means "I could just create a prince for you" (make you a prince). Hence the totally random prince that appears who's too far away to be some pop culture reference

I don't think I'm the only one confused by this joke. The thing that adds to the strangeness of it is how far the "prince" is from the camera

Correct. Genie was saying he could literally make a prince. It’s like asking someone to make you a sandwich and they turn you into a pastrami on rye.

Lot of rose colored glasses with regard to Robin Williams as The Genie. When the original animated film came out, a lot of people liked it, but there were also a lot of people who thought his shtick was getting old and found it and the character wildly annoying. Now it's become "You can never replace Robin Williams as The Genie!"

My issue is that Will Smith is trying to be Robin Williams but his humor has never been the same as Robin's, so it comes off as awkward. I agree that I wasn't totally on board with some of Robin's Genie - the topical references haven't aged well, kids today have no idea who Rodney Dangerfield or William Buckley were - but for the most part he worked in the part.

"Friend Like Me" was written for RW's manic style. Having Will Smith sing the same song isn't going to work well because Smith is not the same sort of comedian. He's much more laid back.

This is very much a Will Smith performance on display. Very 90s, early 2000s...figured he was too old for it.

It’s one of the best Disney classic songs so I’m not surprised you’ve seen that.
