Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Just saw it tonight finally. It was actually a fine film, but that's because the original story is so amazingly great its really hard to mess up a classic like Aladdin unless you are absolutely trying to. The musical numbers were fine, the only one that felt clunky was the original song by Jasmine, "Speechless", which is a good song but felt somewhat shoehorned in. Didn't really flow with the film very well at all.

I actually liked Will Smith's performance as the Genie and I'm glad that they mixed in a little of the Robin Williams take along with Will's own style. In fact I thought all the performances felt unique and different enough from the original to not feel like a complete carbon copy, so I genuinely was able to just enjoy the film for what it was. Obviously there were parts that slowed the movie down, such as Jasmine's song, and its definitely longer than it needs to be, but it doesn't hurt the movie bad enough to make it unenjoyable.

One improvement over the original, at least to me, was that Aladdin and Genie actually felt like genuine friends in this movie and I really liked that part of it, and a lot of that is because Will Smith and Mena Massoud had pretty good chemistry. It was plenty colorful, great costumes, the acting was solid. I came in with low expectations and had a good time. Good job, Disney.

7.5/10

This movie is having a great low-key box office run smashing through pre-release expectations and displaying some amazing staying power.
It’s already at 615M ww and on course to make 300M+ dom and 700M+ worldwide.

I am wondering how is this movie doing compared to the other live Disney remake movies?

Not as well as Beauty and the Beast or The Jungle Book, but better than Cinderella and much better than Dumbo. All in all, it’s doing quite well for a movie that was being trashed when Will Smith’s Genie was first revealed.

Well I guess that could be a good thing then. Although I did think it would do better than both Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast. I am also surprised Cinderella didn't do to well considering out of all of the remakes besides Aladdin that one is my second favorite.

I wasn’t expecting this to do better than Beauty and the Beast, that thing was a juggernaut when it was released. But I think The Lion King is about to be the highest grossing of the live action Disney remakes, and will probably stay that way unless the inevitable live action Frozen does better.

Cinderella did really well too.

The only bombs they’ve had are Alice Through the Looking Glass and Dumbo.

Mary Poppins Returns as well.

I think DarkKnight88 only meant live-action reimagining of animated movies, not just live-action movies in general (and Mary Poppins Returns and the 2 Alice weren’t even remakes, but sequels). Otherwise we need to include Pete’s Dragon, etc. as well.

The one with most underwhelming box office is Dumbo, but that’s just by Disney standard. Star Trek Beyond had same production budget and box office revenue like Dumbo, and Paramount still wanted to make a Star Trek 4, so I think Dumbo will at least break even eventually.

Box office is still ticking over. I can see it getting to $800m ww, give or take $10m either way.

There are basically three types of box office stories I like. The juggernaut that breaks records left and right, the terrible movie that crashes and burns and, my personal favorite, the sleeper hit. April, may and june of this year brought me all three which I think is pretty awesome.

Once again The House of Mouse has found away to make even more money. By Re-releasing the original Animated Masterpiece classic with a whole bunch of more bonus features and add-on

April: the juggernaut Avengers Endgame
May: the sleeper hit Aladdin
June: crash and burn X-Men: DP?

Aladdin is not a sleeper hit. It’s a blockbuster hit.

Sleeper hit is a term used in the entertainment industry for a film that plays successfully for a long period and becomes a big success, despite having relatively little promotion or lacking a successful opening.

Yesterday would be more akin to a sleeper hit.

Aladdin has crossed a billion this weekend, along with Spider-Man (though technically Sony). The Lion King will be there in a few days and Toy Story 4 should make it as well.

Billion Dollar Disney Movies in 2019:
Captain Marvel
Endgame
Aladdin
The Lion King

They still have Frozen 2 and IX to come. Ridiculous.

‘Aladdin’ Producer Says Live-Action Disney Sequel in ‘Early Stages’ Spurring Hopes of ‘Return of Jafar’

Speaking to SYFYWIRE, “Aladdin” producer Dan Linwas asked about the possibility of a sequel to the Guy Ritchie-directed hit, perhaps in the form of a remake of Disney’s direct-to-video sequel “The Return of Jafar,” which followed the original 1992 animated film and hit shelves in 1994. (The studio released yet another direct-to-video sequel in 1996, “Aladdin and the King of Thieves.”) While Lin is optimistic about sequel possibilities, he’s more cautious about deeming any follow-ups as “Return of Jafar” remakes.

Damn I would have loved to see the return of Jafar in live action. Seeing him in full evil genie mode would have been awesome. Oh well maybe they’ll just skip ahead to seeing Aladdin’s dad that could be hot

They could technically still do it and bring Iago over like in the original.
