Just saw it tonight finally. It was actually a fine film, but that's because the original story is so amazingly great its really hard to mess up a classic like Aladdin unless you are absolutely trying to. The musical numbers were fine, the only one that felt clunky was the original song by Jasmine, "Speechless", which is a good song but felt somewhat shoehorned in. Didn't really flow with the film very well at all.
I actually liked Will Smith's performance as the Genie and I'm glad that they mixed in a little of the Robin Williams take along with Will's own style. In fact I thought all the performances felt unique and different enough from the original to not feel like a complete carbon copy, so I genuinely was able to just enjoy the film for what it was. Obviously there were parts that slowed the movie down, such as Jasmine's song, and its definitely longer than it needs to be, but it doesn't hurt the movie bad enough to make it unenjoyable.
One improvement over the original, at least to me, was that Aladdin and Genie actually felt like genuine friends in this movie and I really liked that part of it, and a lot of that is because Will Smith and Mena Massoud had pretty good chemistry. It was plenty colorful, great costumes, the acting was solid. I came in with low expectations and had a good time. Good job, Disney.
7.5/10
