Interview with Joel Silver:
However, with "The Losers" on its way to theaters in April 2010, Silver said he expects "Lobo" to the next comic book movie he concentrates on. The film, which follows DC's ultraviolent cosmic bounty hunter, was originally rumored to have "Sherlock Holmes" director Guy Ritchie behind the camera, but Ritchie cast some doubts on his involvement during a recent MTV News interview.
"I want to try and make 'Lobo' very soon," Silver responded when asked which comic book project was next on his plate after "The Losers."

it's so strange because I honestly thought they actually released the Guy Ritchie news in the trades.

well silver probably does want to get lobo going since isnt lobo pretty much last DC comics character he still retains film rights too since DCE took back film rights on various producers?

So, it looks like Guy Ritchie will jump on board to direct the Sherlock Holmes sequel this summer from a script by the JL writers, the Murloneys.
Will they wait for him to direct Lobo or move on to another director?

I'm really afraid that at some point the market will be oversaturated with superhero movies and the audience will want something different. Soon this fad will be over so they should take advantage of it now and try and establish popular new movie franchises that will survive in the future. Lobo just wont. And who cares about Lobo when Superman, WW, Flash and other more important characters dont have a movie to their name?

Lobo's not really a traditional superhero so I dont think he'll add to the oversaturation as far as the general audience matters.

I never really bought in to the "important characters." Jonah Hex got made because of opportunity. People came forward with a spec script and they greenlit it. Lobo is getting made because Silver wants to push his own properties riding the coattails of the new DC filma agenda, and to make sure he can cash in before DC makes a move to take them back. Priority lists should be lax to allow these kind of projects to move instead of waiting on Wonder Woman, Flash, and Superman which have been absolute ****shows.

i personally dont think the superhero movies are a fad and they probably will be around for a good long while. i do hope we can get a few more big names out of dc characters and all that. But who knows.

I think Uwe Boll should handle this character.

I think Boll is really the only director that deserves Lobo.

I just feel that the character of Lobo should only be handled by an artist like Uwe Boll.

How about Joe Carnahan as a director for lobo?
He worked with Kevin Durand in the past....

I think Cuyan is implying that Lobo is a bad character, thus he necessitates a bad director... poor deluded dude

But that's the point.

That is where characters such as Lobo and Deadpool could excel if audiences are getting a bit burned out with super hero movies. Because they are satirical, parody type characters. And they definitely ain't super heroes in the traditional sense. Characters like that could be a breath of fresh air.

yea it would be cool if lobo/deadpool do happen. They are fun characters and if treated correctly could be a fun movie.

Lobo is an awful parody of an awful character. It's like making a spoof of a Wayans Bros. film.

I don't look at him as a parody of another character.

He parodies all the cliche, formulaic things that goes on in comics. That can be transferred to film.

He was created as a parody of Wolverine, and since Wolverine is like an unintentional parody himself, Lobo becomes something of a paradox.

Yea but he is nothing like Wolverine now really. He's grown into his own character.

"Sherlock Holmes" played second fiddle to the aliens of "Avatar" at the box office, but the Victorian Age sleuth just beat out another extraterrestrial -- director Guy Ritchie has set aside the planned "Lobo" film to clear his schedule for a fast-tracked "Holmes" sequel, according to producer Joel Silver.

"Holmes" has pulled in $389 million in worldwide box office since its Christmas Day release and looks to add to that with overseas releases still pending in Germany, Japan, France and several other markets. The role of the famed literary detective also just earned Robert Downey Jr. a surprise Golden Globe, suggesting that the actor might still be in play for an Oscar nomination next week.

Silver is a producer of "Holmes" as well as "Lobo," which would adapt the ultra-violent antihero from the pages of DC Comics. Ritchie, who burst on the scene with "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in 1998, has his biggest commercial success with "Holmes," and Warner Bros. wants to parlay that into a franchise as quickly as possible, Silver told me this afternoon.

"I don't think he's going to do it now," Silver said of Ritchie directing "Lobo." "The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another 'Sherlock Holmes.' So I think we're going to be doing that. But we're seeing what happens with this. Everybody is analyzing everything. It's all kind of happening right now as we talk. 'Sherlock' is sitting at just about $400 million in worldwide gross and showing itself to be pretty effective and pretty strong. So we're trying to see if we can do something quickly with another 'Sherlock Holmes' movie. We have some ideas and some good story points."

Does that mean "Lobo" will be postponed until Ritchie is free, or is the plan to move on with a new director?

"I would guess a dfferent director," said Silver, who is producing "Lobo" with Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona. "It's all happening at once now. Everybody is talking about everything .... It's an ongoing conversation. Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I'd love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great."

Our sister blog 24 Frames brought you the news earlier this month that Downey had dropped out of Jon Favreau's "Cowboys and Aliens" and the guess was that move was made for a Baker Street reunion. Now "Holmes" has knocked a second interstellar comic-book story off of its plan.
Silver said "Lobo" remains a viable project. In the 1980s, the character was a wickedly funny parody of the antiheroes Wolverine and Punisher, characters that now have a combined seven film appearances to their credit.

"It was created as a rebuttal to the Marvel characters and his vest said 'Bite me fanboy,' " Silver pointed out. "It was very much a response to Wolverine and Punisher and the other characters and I think now that makes it fresh [for moviegoers]. We're working on it now and it will be nice to put it together and make it happen."

And what about that rumor that Brad Pitt (who memorably worked with Ritchie on "Snatch") would be in the "Holmes" sequel as Professor Moriarty? Silver sounded less than optimistic about that one: "Well, I mean, we talked about that at one point, but you know as of right now we're not sure what we're going to do. We'll see what happens."

As with most DC characters except GL, and the inevitable Bats 3, I suspect we're a long ways away from Lobo happening now.

yea probably will be awhile unless they do decide to drop guy officially and get another director on board.
