Ninja Theory Dev Comments on 10GB Audio, next game on dual bd?

A developer from Ninja theory responds to the recent news about the developers using over 10GB of space for only Heavenly Sword audio.

The developers came very close to using a dual layer blu-ray disc because even with the size of the single layer blu-ray disc, they were having problems fitting all all of the game’s audio data onto a single layer blu- ray disc. According to the developer :

“We use a mixture of compressed and uncompressed, but lots were compressed for the reasons people have stated.
Make no doubt, fitting all the audio in and not stuttering and being the the highest quality we could get wasn’t easy, it was quite a problem even with the size of blu-ray. At one point we seriously considered dual layer Blu-ray cos of disk space issues.”

He further states that, as a result, the possibility of us seeing double layer blu-ray games should be really soon as , their first game for the PS3 almost occupied the whole space offered by a single layer blu-ray disc.

Ninja theory dev:

“Dual Layer BD is very real, as I said we very nearly became the first PS3 title to use it and this wasn’t just a random thought, it was seriously considered (including our publisher doing costing and manufacturing calculations).”

One of the developers (nAo or DeanoC) on beyond3d was saying that at one point they (Ninja Theory) were considering going dual layered, so 50 gig, and Sony determined that it would be feasible cost wise for them to do so if they needed. Apparently they're just under the 25 gig size when it's all said and done.

So....how the hell is a DVD9 gonna..like...work?

This is so confusing. Like, you could just make it downloadable I guess...but damn.

Well I don't think that anyone seriously argues that developers don't want the extra space, but you can always compress compress compress.

All of their audio is 7.1 uncompressed (streamed to the hard drive first) and all of those animated cartoons are 1080P 7.1 audio, and they have about a dozen 7.1 language tracks on the CD.

is it possible for developers these days to make a game on regular sized DVD disks?

You mean next gen games? Microsoft has been doing it pretty painlessly with the 360. That's not to say that not having a disc cap doesn't have its upsides.

360 devs have 7.5 gigs of space on a DVD9.

I mean it's obviously more then possible and probably not even a big barrier if dev teams are approaching DVD9 knowing their making a game for it, but if you take a dev who works on Blu Ray, with all 25 gigs of space, they will find useful and practical ways to use that space for their game.

100? Lol. That seems a little steep. I've no doubt it's a great game, but 100 implies perfection. Could have at least gone with a 96. :p

Play Magazine gave Sonic The Hedgehog a 9.5 :P

Might have been an 8.5, but Sonic the Hedgehog is a terrible game. :o

IGN UK = 7.0 out of 10

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/815/815031p1.html

9.0 Presentation
Superficially at least, Heavenly Sword is an almost impeccable display of sheer, unrestrained talent.
9.0 Graphics
Minor framerate and tearing issues aside, Heavenly Sword is an absolute tour de force of visual splendour.
8.5 Sound
Voice acting, effects work and soundtrack hit all the rights buttons with gusto, although occassional dodgy level mixing hurts.
6.0 Gameplay
As solid as its component parts are, poor design decisions and awful structure mean they never make for a cohesive, satisfying whole.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
Despite the wealth of combos and extras to unlock, you'll be constnatly battling with tedium on subsequent play-throughs.
7.0
Decent OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I guess there's no beating Ninja Gaiden or God of War...oh well
