SURVEY QUESTIONS

1. What are three traits you feel describe northerners?
Busy, fast-paced lives. They do lots of multitasking.
Convinced that they are right. It's generally assumed anyone who disagrees just doesn't understand things as well as they do.
Dissatisfied. Many people would rather live somewhere else, have a better job, have changes in society, different government, &c.

2. What are three traits you feel describe southerners?
Traditionalist. Averse to change, feel an obligation to support the status quo. Any change should be towards something they think worked in the past.
Community-minded. Family is of greater concern than in the north, and local government is more important.
Religion is important.

3. What do you think are the major changes that have occured in the North since WWII?
Residential and commercial development has greatly spread. There are less and less open areas of land, to the point where much of the east coast is one big area of development and nature exists as patches within. Also, there is less and less self-reliance as (a) region(s) because of this development, and many products used are made elsewhere.

4. What do you think are the major changes that have occured in the South since WWII?
Racial issues are greatly lessened, and agriculture is of less importance. It hasn't all but disappeared as it has in some parts of the north, but it's prominenece is still not as great. It's become more of an industry.

5. What do you see as the major advantages of living in the North?
Greater access to resources and services. Travel is faster (albeit more complicated) as there are roads all over.

6. What do you see as the major advantages of living in the South?
Much cheaper taxes and property values, so money goes a longer way.

7. Where do you want to live (city, state)? and Why?
California, as it has many of the advantages of the north, but with a better climate.

8. What are the major problems facing the North today?
Overdevelopment. Also, the influx of people does not match job growth. Eventually unemployment is going to go way up.

9. What are the major problems facing the South today?
Really not sure. I know drugs are getting to be a problem in some of the very rural areas, but I don't know any that aren't problems everywhere else too.

10. Do you feel that race is a major issue in the North/South today?
It's an issue, but not a major one like it has been in the past.

11. Do you think that Southern politicians are different from their Northern counterparts? Explain?
They are more traditionalist, and more interested in individual rights as far as possesions (guns, land, etc.), but nothing too specific. I don't want to use the president as representative of all southern politics, so I can't say anything more specific.

I generally try to avoid those meetings, the robes really wash my skin out. Plus, you know, I can never get my cross to light.

But I do appreciate the instant stereotyping. It's nice to know that false suppositions based on outmoded stereotypes are still prevalent amongst people in the North as well as the South.

It's funny isn't it? You read my survey and automatically think I'm a racist Southerner, I read your post and automatically think you're a misinformed, arrogant Yankee.

Yet we're probably both wrong.

oh man, see it's witty rejoinders like that one that make me appreciate the time I waste here on the boards.

Darthphere, you opened the floor up with what most people would interpret as a slightly veiled insult.

I didn't get mad, I instead made a simple attempt to engage in light-hearted playful banter.

What do you have against Southerners man?

He's from Florida... yeah, definitely shouts "Yankee" to me. :o

I dont know, you seem to be perpetrating the stereotype of southerners being illiterate, considering my survey says im from Miami, Fl, not Miami, Ohio. Last time I checked I lived in the South and never said I hate southerners.

Florida is home to a lot of transplanted Yanks. That's why we try to avoid places like Miami.
Plus you know, you get the "Snowbirds" seasonal yanks. They bounce down in the winter to make things difficult.

So Florida as whole has areas that are still Southern, but most Southerners would not call Floridians Southerners.

It's relatively similar to California. It's certainly very far west, but you wouldn't say "oh man I'm heading out west, you know, to California"
Out west brings to mind places like Utah and Montana, Texas and Oklahoma.

*EDIT*

ooh see, I didn't even see that he was from Miami until after I posted this. And no you never said you hated Southerners. And I have never said I hated Yanks.

News flash... if you are born in the South then you are a Southerner. You don't need special qualities to make yourself a Southern born person.

Darthphere said:

I think he is one of those people who is still bitter about losing the Civil War or something... even though it ended 141 years ago.

You seriously call Northerners "Yanks"?
I'm pretty sure last time I checked the Civil War was over..

I think in this case "Yanks" is being used in a derogatorry fashion. I call a meeting of the minds to discern its use.

Holly Goodhead said:

He is one of those moronic Southerners who probably thinks the South will rise again. I can't believe they exist... but they do. They fly their little Confederate flags and whatnot and think they're special for being "true" Southerners.

Darthphere said:

As individuals? Nothing in particular.

One time though, a whole bunch of them came down, burned my city to the ground, salted my farm, and killed my friends....

...wait, no, that was Gone with the Wind.

On an Individual basis, I have found that Yankees are just as diverse as Southerners. Some Yankees are exceedingly polite, follow basic rules of curtesy, and practice the proper etiquette that should be displayed in mixed company.
Some Southerners are exceedingly rude, highly illcouth, illiterate, and generally ignorant.

In a general sense though, the majority of Southerners I've met are considerate, relatively well-mannered, honorable, and moral people.
And the majority of Yankees I've found to be slightly offensive, a little pushy, a little arrogant, and as a whole, the type of person I don't particurlalyl want to be around. (And that's saying something because I really love people)

All that being said, one of my best friends is from Pennsylvania. Granted, he's from a farm in Pennsylvania, but that's still pretty far north. My Aunt and Uncle live in New Jersey, and my cousins live in Chicago.

So yes, I have spent considerable time in both the North and the South. I'm not saying that I am uninfluenced by preconceived notions about Yankees, I am well aware of the stigmas my family holds against Yanks, but I feel that as a whole, a great many of them are proven true.

No not really, he is outspoken though. However he definitely loves living in the South.
