Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

But did anyone actually believe him? It's not like the previous G.I. Joe movies were highbrow art, why would this one be any different?
No one did because the pedigree behind this movie sucks.

The star of the movie says it's great. It must be true.
What do you expect him to say? It's like actors promoting anything else they're in. You're not going to talk bad about the film.

Sure, most reviews seem to suggest it is very cookie cutter and by the numbers but it's not like the star of the movie is going to say that.

Yes. She's alluring and exotic, but she doesn't leave much of an impression. She does fight a little in the film. Wasn't all that memorable.

Wow so they even managed to completely waste The Baroness yet again. Now, that's a shame because I actually liked that actress in Money Heist and didn't even recognize her in this.

I guess I shouldn't be too surpised though since they did even less with the character in Rise of Cobra and completely wasted Sienna's Miller's talent in the role.

It's sad how much this franchise is lacking when it comes to quality writing.

I think it would've been less annoying if he didn't try to trash other superhero films. Just say "Our movie looks great, I think you're gonna like it!" Don't throw other, superior movies under the bus to try and hype up your own.

That's the part I didn't like, not so much hyping up the movie, same with Hama. Hama is just being a good sport, and Golding is the start attempting to get his own franchise. It's part of the gig. But like there was no reason to trash other films to make yours look good.

Also for Hama, the man served in the military and fought in Vietnam. He will always have my respect for that alone. I can easily forgive him endorsing this film.

I think I'm more disappointed because I wanted to be proven wrong about my instincts for this film. Right from Goldens initial casting, I felt this was gonna be off.

The script and direction here did him no favors. Same with Andrew Koji. When he got mad, he looked like a pouting kid throwing a temper tantrum. It didn't look natural. And I know Andrew Koji is capable of better from Warrior.

Did you have any tasty buttered popcorn with your viewing

I would've been fine with Golding's casting if they actually maintained the aspects of Snake Eyes' origin and backstory that make him a fun and interesting character.

That's what I'm saying. A dead family, a mysterious other driver, a man lost and alone taken in by a blood brothers ninja clan. A sad return home, followed by a disastrous, silencing first mission.

THEN the black on black masked suit.

But here, they obviously somersaulted on fire over the shark.

What's hilarious is the cool suit that actually looks like his suit from the comics is barely even in the movie :( And they market the whole movie around it.

Fantastic popcorn flick. Hollywood finally gets it right with Asian characters & setting. Audiences can be cruel today, but anyone with an open mind will have a great time.

Grace Randolph talking about how audiences can be cruel is the high point of hilarity to me.

Exactly. How in the world did he think that bashing the superhero genre would somehow help his movie...considering that there is a MASSIVE overlap in fandoms?

Besides...you know darn well he'd join an MCU movie tomorrow if they wanted to hire him. Now I hope they never do.

Yup. I mean a big draw for the hardcore fans is Larry Hama's MARVEL comic series for GI Joe. And one thing I like about Hama's comic is he did tell some more mature, darker stories with his GI Joe comic. Yes there was silliness at times, but the stakes were generally higher than the cartoon series.

The modern version of GI Joe that Hama created in the 80s was cut from a similar cloth as superhero comic stories.

Is Hama the person who reimagined GI Joe into what we know of it today or is it someone else or a group of people over the years? I have no knowledge of this franchise other than the basics.

That was Larry Hama. So the Marvel Comics, COBRA, Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, along with all the action figure bios were his creation. Much like Bob Budiansky who basically created the bible and mythology for Transformers after some initial work by Jim Shooter.

Honestly guys, does this result truly shock anyone? I have had bad vibes from this since the begbeginning. I just don't see the Avengers model as working for GI Joe. When watching this show, I honestly never thought Duke or Shipwreck or even Snake Eyes were so awesome they needed their own series. The appeal was always the 2 factions and their very outlandish characters interacting. Also, has any movie with Origins in the title ever been good?

I expected this to be trash.

Wow, I don’t get all the hate for the movie? It’s a movie based on a toy line for God’s sake. It’s not gonna win any awards but it is the best GI Joe movie by a long shot, imo. Yeah, I know that’s not saying a whole helluva lot. It was entertaining and worth the price of admission.
Golding was OK, I really liked Koji’s StormShadow. Hope they make another and continue the story.
