He generally does a very thorough and fair breakdown of the box office without the cringey histrionics that you get with other critics like a Grace Randolph or sometimes a John Campea. I think he’s good and quite knowledgeable about the industry so I recommend you check him out.

The last G.I. Joe movie was released back in 2013 and even though the 2nd one earned more worldwide, G.I. Joe is just not something you can reboot again for the movies and the audience will show up. The movie being a solo spin off doesn't help as well. I don't know why Paramount even greenlit this. They should have made G.I. Joe Three in 2014 or 15 instead with The Rock. The performance of this will definitely kill future G.I. Joe movies, if there are any in the works.

Misdirection over all. Just because Henry Golding appeared in Crazy Rich Asians, it doesn't mean every movie he will appear after that is a guaranteed success. He's not a big draw.

Also they killed Channing's character in the second film very early in the film, which was another red flag.

Jon Chu isn't an A-list director. Crazy Rich Asians was a hit, but that's the outlier. In the Heights was good but it was a colossal flop, and then you have Now You See Me 2 which had a mixed reception at best and Jem and the Holograms, which made $3 million worldwide on a $5 million budget and I completely forgot that was a thing until I looked up his resume. I'm amazed he was able to bounce back from that.

Tatum was pretty bad in the first one and he even went on record saying that he hated the script, so he might have requested to be killed off. It's ironic though, because that was right when he was starting to appeal to audiences more with 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike when more people were starting to like him.

For some reason, I'm a bit more confident Shang-chi is gonna be better than this flick.

This was never going to do well even if the pandemic wasn't a factor. G.I. Joe isn't that popular of an IP these days, the nostalgia never caught on for it like it did for Transformers. I feel like its target audience is adult toy collectors who grew up with the cartoon in the '80s. The last two Joe movies did okay but they were more ensemble movies and also had the added benefit of having stars like Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum involved. Frankly, I'm not expecting Shang Chi to do spectacular either (at least compared to other recent MCU films) but I'm sure it'll do better than Snake Eyes just from the Marvel brand alone.

I personally think Shang Chi will have the best hand to hand action, in any superhero movie thus far.

We're 0/2 so far with American martial arts movies this year with Mortal Kombat and Snake Eyes.

The biggest issue with these movies are the bull**** rapid cuts and shaky cam shot fight scenes. I think Shang Chi, will avoid this just from snippets shown in the featurette.

Yeah which makes me wonder why Channing Tatum didn't want to be part of the franchise in which he was the lead.

I’m starting to doubt that about Shang Chi. They’ve shown very little fighting in the trailers and what they have shown is generic fighting with occasional slow motion.

Maybe that’s because they’re trying to be judicious with the amount of hand-to-hand fight choreography they’re showing in trailers. Preferring instead for one to get a full taste of the action when you’re watching the movie rather than spoiling them in a minute in a half trailer. In my mind, what we’ve seen so far in the trailers is merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of the action. Which I think is a rather smart move. Trailers these days tend to show too much, so I think it’s been a nice sign that the trailers have been relatively scarce on what they‘ve shown aside from a few big giveaways; like Wong fighting Abomination.

I mostly have faith in that movie to deliver thanks to Dustin Daniel Cretton(the guy who did Short Term 12). He’s a filmmaker I admire and Marvel has a quality control only rivaled(and in some cases) surpassed by Pixar. Which, funny enough, Disney also owns. I really think Shang-Chi will surprise people in its quality. It’s going to be much better than what the trailers are letting you on to believe.

The first weekend was bad enough at 13M (compared to 40 - 50 M for the last 2 GIJOE flicks)
